When Lisa Reisert boards the red eye flight back to Miami after going to her grans funeral, she is sat beside handsome stranger Jackson Rippner who she previously met in the airport bar. Starting off as a friendly banter between the two, the flight soons descends into a flight of terror for Lisa as he reveals that he is part of a plot to assassinate an important politician who is staying with his family at the hotel she manages in. Revealing that if she doesn't change the politician's room to make the assassination possible, his people will have her father killed, she has to choose between saving her father and saving the politician and his family. Lisa tries to find a way to save both, using her ingenuity, but the mad man always seems one step ahead of her.
Wes Craven is responsible for some of the best horror films of his time. Responsible for genre-defining greats such as A Nightmare On Elm Street and Scream, he takes the helm here, changing tactics from the usual bloodfest to a more thrilling Hitchcockian style. Thats not to say that there isn't plenty of blood. The gore is all present and correct after both leave the flight, and the action is relocated to Lisa's house. But there is a focus on the performances, as Craven realises that the premise of the second act all relies on the characters capturing your interest in the first act. There are herring a plenty. An unexplained plot thread is the scar on Lisa's chest, which will leave you niggling for answers long after you've finished watching the film. The film also opens with various other character's being introduced only to be quickly discarded as the flight takes off. Wes is reknowned for introducing characters at the start of a film, with the intention of setting them up as integral to the plot before offing them five minutes into the film. There is no such explanation here for the absence of said characters, but long after the action kicks off, its no longer relevant. Cillian Murphy is a blinder. He has the perfect face for the everyman psycho, his deep blue eyes both intensely mesmerising and frighteningly wide. He is surprisingly rounded here, lending a slight sympathy to his protaganist, assuring her that as long as the job is done well, she and her father wont be harmed. Rachel McAdam is sterling as ever though. She has become one of the best actress's of modern film, and its great to see her do something here that captures your attention right away. A lesser actress might have lost the audience very early on. Much like the recent Flightplan, Red Eye's action predominately takes place on a flight. This lends an extra intensity to the film, both characters resigned to their seats for the first hour of the film, they cant go anywhere. She is effectively held hostage by him. Wes Craven manages to combine great performances with a tight script and using his tiny spaces to create an atmosphere of claustrophobia and doom within the air craft. There are elements of disbelief, such as the size of the house. It feels like she's ran the gauntlet before she finds another door to take her to the other end of the house. But these are minor niggles that are eased by the fact that the film is thrilling from the opening conversations in the airport to the bloody finale that takes place back at Lisa's house.
The DVD has an interesting commentary by Wes Craven and some of his team. I love to hear Wes talk about his films. He is just so passionate about them, and is articulate about the details of the films. There is also a Making of documentary which is the bog standard look at how the film was made and offers a few insights into the techniques that Wes adopted within the plane set. Some other extra's are less interesting, but all in all its a decent enough package.

-Sound & Vision-
RedEye was shot in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen and looks great on DVD. The film has a nice visual style with a lot of dark blacks and blues. I certainly felt that transfer upheld the cinematic feel of the film.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is also a nice surprise. As a lot of the film takes place in one location you get a good sound experience. The rear speakers are mixed with the background noise of the plane and the turbulence to place you right on top of the action.
-Extras-
The DVD comes with a small amount of extras to supplement the film. Craven contributes an audio commentary that also includes the producer and editor. I've always found Craven's commentary tracks to be interesting and this is no exception. With the film's short running time there is a lot ...

Advantages: Fun and Thrilling. Disadvantages: As Most Films - Predictable.
Ever since seeing Cillian Murphy in 28 days later I have been a massive fan of his as he is a fantastic actor and one who impressed me straight away. Then we have Rachel McAdams who is also quite new to the Hollywood scene and has established herself as a fun actress rather than an annoying young, pretty one. RedEye appealed to me because of these two actors and also because it is directed by Wes craven who I usually like so I was looking forward to having the DVD to review for you all.

Advantages: a great thriller, plenty of tension, good characters Disadvantages: not for anybody expecting lots of blood and gore.
RedEye is directed by none other than the horror expert himself, 'Wes Craven'. With top films such as 'Scream', 'The Hills Have Eyes' and 'A Nightmare On Elm Street', under his belt, Wes is no doubt one of the top men within the horror film industry. However, he is also quite the star when it comes to creating good, intense, thrillers, and redEye is no exception.
*** The Plot ***
After attending the funeral of her recently departed grandmother, Lisa Reisert is now on her way back to Miami, to her job as a hotel manager. However, on what should be a regular flight back to Miami, she encounters a mysterious stranger named Jack Ripner.
Jack comes across as a strange, kind of arrogant, yet strangely sweet at the same time, guy. Undoubtedly handsome, Lisa cannot resist his charms when he asks her to have a drink with him before ...
