Lisa has just come back from her Grandma's funeral and is having a pretty bad day - the flights are delayed, her father is constantly worried about her and she is stuck reading a Doctor Phil book. However when she meets Jackson Rippner her day perks up abit - he is charming and handsome and helps her pass the time. However, when they board the plane they part ways, until she sees that they are sitting together that is. At first he is good humoured and she begins to enjoy his company, but then he turns - he has her father hostage and will kill him unless she uses her managerial powers to switch the presidents room at the hotel she works at. How can she choose between her father and the president? And will she be able to escape this psychopath alive?
Red Eye is a nifty little thriller that's almost Hitchcockian in execution, unbearably tense, well acted and surprisingly intelligent with a well judged running time and a lot of twists and turns. Ranging from tense and taunt to gruelling and thrilling the film covers pretty much every base in the thriller genre. The scenes in the plane are beautifully made - with Craven using the claustrophobic setting to full advantage and cranking up the tension to dizzying heights as Lisa is forced to choose between her fathers life or that of the presidents. The camera work is edgy and the direction is chillingly detached as the two leads are forced to sit next to each other, here there isn't a lot of action but the script is tight and the sense of foreboding palpable with each second building the texture and tension of the piece. As the plot switches gear and the film becomes a more routine cat and mouse game the script injects thrills a plenty with more edge of your seat moments that you thought possible and a huge amount of inventiveness that keeps even the clichés seeming fresh. Red Eye also has a wonderfully fast pace and suitably short running time that's long enough to build a story but short enough to keep the surprises coming thick and fast without being tiresome. It's a hugely enjoyable, well made and exciting with more smarts than you might expect.
What makes Red Eye such a successful thriller is its surprisingly uneven, but effective tone - the film constantly reinvents itself and could be placed into many different genre which keeps the audience -and characters- constantly on edge. Just when you think you know how the film is going to go, the rug is pulled from under you and you are left gasping for more. For a modern day film it is also wonderfully subtle - Craven uses quiet changes in music and mini shifts in lighting that are in harsh contrast with some of the more noticeable plot devices. Edgy camera angles help the beginning sequences build a sense of urgency and as the production progresses there is a lot of influence on the actors faces which projects unease as you are never really sure what is happening in the area around them. The first half is surprisingly slow but builds character development and story structure which pays dividends in the end - it allows you to care about our heroine in distress and stops the menacing psychopath from turning into a pantomime baddie. A coherent plot actually arises through all of the fun and the intricacies of it only help enhance the enjoyment of the film - the plane sequences truly are like the old classics, not relying on effects or talking down to the audience they are filled with tension and crisp dialogue which just makes the trashy B movie ending all the more satisfying.
The finale of Red Eye is formulaic -pitting the heroine and villain against each other in a fight to the death- but never the less thrilling as all involved try their best to add pace, tension and shocks galore. This is probably the most entertaining part of the film as its pure B movie thrills all the way with some edge of your seat moments and more than a few surprises - Rachel McAdams shows that she is capable of the more psychical sequences and there is something undeniably appealing about an attractive woman beating down the baddies. The setting of the showdown - Lisa's family home- offers some great opportunities for hiding places and cubby holes, whilst giving the players an arsenal of weaponry to beat the hell out of each other. As the seconds go by the tension increases and Craven gets a few chances to add some of his trade-mark scares whilst injecting style and flair and the film goes with a suitably explosive bang. The action sequences aren't as brilliant as the more confined and mature thriller ones because they don't offer anything new and the conclusion is much like the ending of numerous other films -Craven's Scream being one of them- and the sudden shift in pace feels abrupt at first. That being said it is darn good fun and leaves you with a smile on your face, it doesn't drag the film down because it is directed with cunning and grace and it will no doubt warrant a few screams from some audiences.
Sadly there are a few things that stop Red Eye becoming an instant classic - namely the comedy elements that fall flat, feel stale and reek of that self knowing that never allows you to take the movie too seriously. Every now and again a bad joke will come along and make you cringe -which is never a good thing, but especially not in a thriller!- and its as if the actors know this and give them little of their time or energy. Occasionally the film also thinks its 24, zooming in on the president and split screening to his security guards and then to the assassins who are after him. Granted this is done with a certain amount and intelligence, but it feels completely out of place in a film about tension and splits up the more engaging things that are happening in the plane and at Lisa's home. Infact the president sub plot is irrelevant -Lisa could have been choosing between her fathers life or anyone else's it would of matters- but in an attempt to give the film added relevance in these times they chose the leader of America to be the potential victim. I don't know whether the film would have been so successful at other times in history - because it does rely heavily on the unease that viewers already have on planes and of terrorists. In one particularly resonant scene Lisa boards the plane and looks around at everyone sitting in their seats, you can tell she's examining everyone for potential danger - this adds realism to the piece and an inbuilt tension. In this case the terrorist is a suave American - the last person you would expect to be one, but Murphy pulls the character off with charm at first and then with a terrifying intensity that really helps the character be both scary but also human.
Red Eye is not a realistic film and I'm sure it is an easy one to pick apart, but it is so refreshingly gripping and exciting that you won't want to, it's a thrilling and scary treat that will leave you with at least something to think about. I enjoyed every ridiculous second of it and shall no doubt view it again in the near future - a subtle, intelligent and well-made return to form for Craven with star making turns for McAdams and Murphy. Highly recommended, eve if you don't usually like this sort of thing.

...of film, then no doubt Red Eye will not fail to disappoint you. However if you like to be a little more challenged by your choice of viewing material then you'll be pig sick after this stinker. And in case you're thinking to yourself "Red Eye, I've never heard of that!" well from my initial comments your probably beginning to realise why.

Because Red Eye does not seem like Wes Craven in anyway, it is almost as if it was directed by someone else who had dropped out. But no Wes was there from the very first day; Wes is no stranger to change after the second Scream movie Wes went into production of a family movie about a music teacher called Music Of The Heart starring Meryl Streep of all people. Red Eye is so far removed from anything he has done, and from 25 ...

Advantages: A brilliant, taut thriller Disadvantages: None that I can think of
The first thing that made me take notice of this film was that Rachel McAdams was in it. This was released in 2005 so pretty soon after her two monster hits Mean Girls & one of my favourite films The Notebook in which she was fantastic in it & of course in Mean Girls. She's also great in this & I really can't praise her enough, I think she's a fantastic actress & I hope she does a lot more great movies in the future as she's really someone to look ... ...& drugs like her Mean Girls co-star Lindsay Lohan did, Rachel McAdams seems to really have her eye on the prize & want to concentrate on her career & doing this she has picked some fantastic roles.
Another thing that attracted me to this film was of course the director, Wes Craven. The scream trilogy are three of my favourite films & he really has a great way of building tension in his films. Although he is famous for horrors he really excels in ...

Advantages: No brainer, so you can relax and watch Disadvantages: Poor thriller. Wes Craven telegraphs what will happen next!
Lisa Reisert has her mobile stuck to her head most of the time. It seems that the only way she can conduct, or order, her confusing business and private lives is to organise it all by phone.
She is desperately trying to make suitable arrangement with everyone as quickly as possible and is only too much aware that she could miss her flight to Miami. However, the flight is delayed she ends up in the company of a gentleman named Jackson Rippner. The ... ...smile because it was a real giveaway of the plot before we even got to know the characters.
When they board the plane they have seats next to each other. Of course they had to because of his name and the mounting sense of stress around her. The plot could only be headed in one direction.
There is a built up of psychological tension here as we wait to see if we are correct and Jackson Rippner is who we think he is. All kinds old images come to mind ...

...churned out many good flicks, Red eye another credit to his list, along with the likes of the SCREAM triology. The film starts off showing a busy woman travelling back to Miama on the red eye flight (hence the tite!), after attending her Grandmothers funeral. Advantages: easy to watch, good acting Disadvantages: very very predictable, huge plot holes
The first thing I will say is that there is nothing 'wrong' with this movie...its very hard to put my finger on it!! It is very much your typical watch when theres nothing on type thriller. Its playing on many peoples fear of flying and the inherrant, instilled rule that speaking to strangers is bad! I was impressed with the acting and the claustraphopic feeling of the plane setting, I tend to enjoy movies that are set in restricted and tight spaces, ... ...and sneak fear into people. This just didnt really have 'it' it was very predictable, and the twists were not really twists at all. It is supposed to be a thriller but I have to say that I wasnt particularly thrilled. There are no effects to speak of, and I have to say that the story just didnt happen for me, it really had a lot of potential and I think that with some major plugging of some plot holes, it could have worked really well. As I said ...

Advantages: Tense, tightly paced, good leads, entertaining Disadvantages: DVD extras are a bit disappointing
at the box office after the problems of Cursed.
-Sound & Vision-
RedEye was shot in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen and looks great on DVD. The film has a nice visual style with a lot of dark blacks and blues. I certainly felt that transfer upheld the cinematic feel of the film.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is also a nice surprise. As a lot of the film takes place in one location you get a good sound experience. The rear speakers are mixed with the background noise of the plane and the turbulence to place you right on top of the action.
-Extras-
The DVD comes with a small amount of extras to supplement the film. Craven contributes an audio commentary that also includes the producer and editor. I've always found Craven's commentary tracks to be interesting and this is no exception. With the film's short running time there is a lot ...

Advantages: Fun and Thrilling. Disadvantages: As Most Films - Predictable.
Ever since seeing Cillian Murphy in 28 days later I have been a massive fan of his as he is a fantastic actor and one who impressed me straight away. Then we have Rachel McAdams who is also quite new to the Hollywood scene and has established herself as a fun actress rather than an annoying young, pretty one. RedEye appealed to me because of these two actors and also because it is directed by Wes craven who I usually like so I was looking forward to having the DVD to review for you all.
