Having never bought any of the series on VHS but a great lover of the show i was eagerly anticipating the release of these on DVD, and I was not dissapointed. Origonally retailing at £19.99 though im sure you can find it cheaper now on "Play" for example.

For any of you younger generation that don't know what Red Dwarf is a comedy about, well...... all of the crew on a mining space ship are wiped out except Dave Lister a repair man (as he was in suspended animation). He has a few companions on the ship though including an evolved version of his pet cat and a computerised hologram of one his crew mates. All of series one is situated on the Red Dwarf ship itself and follows their far from normal lives aboard the ship. If you are not a science fiction fan do not be put off watching it, trust me you don't need to be a rocket scientist to laugh at this humour.

Series one is comprised of six episodes as follows:

Episode One: "The End"

This probably the least funny episode in all of Red Dwarf but essential in setting the scene. It shows how life for most of the red dwarf crew comes to an end and you begin to be introduced to "Lister", "Rimmer", "Holly" and "Cat".

Episode Two: "Future Echoes"

The remiaining crew aboard Red Dwarf begin to see the future before it happens as there is some space/time problems. New "Character" in this is the toaster with a personality! I'm sure after this one you'll be singing "Im gonna eat you little fishy"

Episode Three: "Balance of Power"

There is problems with Rimmers data disk resulting in him having very hairy arms.Lister trys to pass his chefs exam despite Rimmers best attempts to see him fail.

Episode Four: "Waiting for God"

My personal favourite of the series - Rimmer is insistent that Alien Life has been found when a pod is retrieved only to find that it is one of Red Dwarfs garbage pods!

Episode Five: "Confidence & Paranoia"

Lister and Rimmer face both their confidence and Paranoia, but which shall win!?

Episode Six: "Me^2"

Lister faces his worst nightmare when a second Rimmer is created, and after a while it becomes too much even for Rimmer to take.

The DVD is also packed with extras:

Commentary
Smeg Ups (outakes)
Deleted Scenes

Music Cues

Lister is a great character played brilliantly by Craig Charles (aka Robot Wars host). His slobbiness even beats mine as a student! Chris Barrie is equally as good playing Rimmer, the hatable character that you can't help feeling sorry for. Chris Barrie was the main character in the comedy Brittas Empire amongst others.

Admittedly so by the writer, and even by me a huge Red Dwarf fan, this is the poorest of all the 8 Series Produced. However it does offer great entertainment, and that little bit extra (in terms of features) for those that already have the series on VHS, making it a worthy member of anyones DVD collection.

Red Dwarf also has one of the best theme tunes of any comedy series, and music plays a big part in all the series.

Red Dwarf is rated 12 (although i remember watching it when it was younger). Most of the language is not that harsh or offensive and in any case Listers most used word is "Smeg" which is made up!
