***INTRO***
My DVD video of the Hitchcock's classical adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's celebrated novel REBECCA came free with the Times, because of this you don't get much more than the film, there is some advise on what to expect from the Times in this section in the future. The film directed by Hitchcock was named the Best Picture in the 1940s by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was brought to use by ABC Motion Pictures Inc. The film is rated PG parental guidance fit for viewing by persons generally. Some of the scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
***THE STORY***
The story adapted by Philip MacDonald & Michael Hogan includes the cast of:
Lawrence Olivier: George Fortescu Maximillian (Maxim de Winter). Joan Fontaine: The second Mis.de Winter. George Sanders: Jack Favell.
Whilst on holiday in Monte Carlo a young timid ladies companion (Joan Fontaine) with her stuffy employer meets the handsome & wealthy Maxim de Winter (Laurence Olivier). Max is still troubled by the death of his wife, Rebecca in a boating accident the year before. She and Max fall in love, get married and return to Manderlay, his large country estate in Cornwall. The second Mrs. de Winter (Lady de Winter) meets the housekeeper Mrs. Danvers and discovers that the memory of Rebecca still has a strange hold on everyone at Manderlay, particularly on Mrs Denvers, the housekeeper, who begins driving the young wife to madness.
***CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE***
Cinematography by George Barnes.
The film is by today's standard's rather dated. The scenes are small and bite sized which help to maintain interest. The dialogue is eloquent and moves at a pace. The actors are a little wooden in their approach, which probably reflects the age of the movie, which has benefited from digital enhancement. The stately home at Manderley becomes the set for the middle part of the film. The rain on arrival at the mansion is heavy and looks artificial. From her on in the suspense increases and the production has for me the same sort of feel of suspense as Hitchcock's Psycho. The music score is not that spectacular, the score uses the eerie sound of the thermin later utilised by the beach Boys psychedelic pop masterpiece "Good Vibrations". The last section is concerned with Rebecca's death suicide/cancer. The fire at Manderay is quite realistic for it's time.
***MY OPINION***
Another classic by Hitchcock, I found the 126 minutes not too long and ideal for an afternoons viewing. Definitely worth checking out.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, please let me know and I'll re-rate.

Advantages: Very atmospheric and close to the original. Full of suspence and intrigue. Disadvantages: Olivier's well-documented real-life dislike of Fontaine shows through at times.
