Advantages: A good idea for reworking "Rear Window"... Disadvantages: ...but it had a poor script and lost a lot of what made the original plot so good
through choice. It is often considered to be one of, if not the, best example of the director's work. In it, we are told the story of LB Jeffries (James Stewart), a photographer trapped in a wheelchair in his apartment by a broken leg. Apparently visited only by his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), he becomes bored and amuses himself during his confinement by watching his neighbours in the building opposite his rearwindow. What happens next is famous; he develops an obsession with the activities of these people, until one day when he becomes convinced that something terrible has happened to one of the women he has been watching. Being trapped at home and unable to do much himself to find out what, if anything, happened to her, we are left with a fascinating premise for an unfolding thriller that is tense and entertaining until the end.

when observing their behaviour. For example James Stewart initially looks out of the window due to boredom, but quite quickly he gains a nosey obsession with watching his neighbours as they go about their day to day lives, he passes judgement on them, and makes assumptions. The great art in this filmmaking is that we too become engorssed and interested in these peoples lives.
In terms of the DVD there are some very worthwhile extras in this film including a very interesting documentary about the making of the film, this provides some fascinating insights, along with the interviews. ...
Advantages: Deliberately slow build-up of tension Disadvantages: May be a bit too slow for some
In case you're wondering, I'm having a bit of an Alfred Hitchcock week, and I've been watching a few films by "the master of suspense". RearWindow was made in 1954, and it's hailed as one of his finest achievements, even being voted number 14 on IMDb's top 250 films! That's above Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia! Plus it was nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Screenplay and Best Director! It stars James Stewart and Grace Kelly as a couple who become sure that there's something suspicious going on in the flat opposite...

DVD Description
This box set includes three classic thrillers - REAR WINDOW, THE BIRDS and VERTIGO. REAR WINDOW - A man confined to his apartment with a broken leg passes the time by spying on his neighbours. He suspects one of his neighbours of murder and must try to convince non-believers. THE BIRDS - Wealthy, reformed party girl, Melanie Daniels, enjoys a brief flirtation with lawyer Mitch Brenner in a San Francisco pet shop and decides to follow him to his Bodega Bay home. Bearing a gift of two lovebirds, Melanie quickly strikes up a romance with Mitch while contending with his possessive mother and boarding at his ex-girlfriend's house. One day, during a birthday party for Mitch's younger sister, a flock of birds attacks the children in what seems to be a random incident. In fact, it signals the beginning of a massive avian assault on the residents of the town - a mysterious assault that no one can explain and one, which no one may survive. VERTIGO - Scottie Ferguson is a retired detective; his career ended by the onset of a paralysing fear of heights. An old friend, the wealthy Gavin Elster, hires Ferguson to follow his wife, whom, he explains has grown obsessed with an ancestor of hers. The assignment draws Ferguson out of his comfortable role as observer and into a complex web of intrigue, mingled with the detective's own fantasies and fears. In attempting to unravel a complicated series of frauds, Ferguson falls in love with the woman he is assigned to follow, only to see her commit suicide - or so he thinks.
