Advantages: Enthralling Plot, fantastic action Disadvantages: Not long enough!
...I'd been looking forward to this film ever since I saw it advertised, and I was totally impressed with this film when I actually got to see it. Fantastic acting, fantastic scenery, and of historical importance too. I actually went on some websites looking for information on the real 'Five Points' in New York and learnt some fascinating facts. I would never have believed this sort of thing ever took place in America.
It starts with the story of thousands of Irish Immigrants to New York (15,000 a day!), the gangs that are formed and the reaction to them from the native New Yorkers. It's well worth spending your money on, and believe me - once you start watching, you won't want it to end. Quite bloodthirsty in places!...

...to undertake his voyage to create a quicker trade route to India by sailing west. He encounters skepticism and the very real danger of being labeled a heretic. These are the days of the Inquisition and even the smallest thing could get you burned alive. Columbus is a charismatic person and uses it to his advantage with Queen Isobel, played by Sigourney Weaver (previously seen in Scott's Alien) whom he befriends. This makes him enemies in the Spanish court.
Eventually, he sets out in three ships west into the unknown. He needs to use all his charms to prevent mutiny as the crew become increasingly restless as the chance of finding land before supplies runs out becomes ever smaller.
The remainder of the film charts the trails and tribulations they find on the island they come across, especially with the natives. The treatment of the natives...
