Born Ray Charles Robinson in 1930 in a poor part of Georgia, the singer and pianist we know simply as Ray Charles did not have the easiest of starts in life. Cared for by his single mother, he witnessed the drowning of his brother at a young age, and by seven, was blind in both eyes. Despite this, his mother entreated him to keep working and to never let his disability get the better of him. His drive and enthusiasm for life was soon to pay dividends in the form of a successful music career, with hits in the charts and a lucrative record contract. Yet his life was not all roses - addicted to heroin, Ray was nearly imprisoned more than once and had extra-marital affairs. Would heroin be the end of his family life? And how would it affect his musical career?

I am not a big fan of biopics; the problem with the story of someone's life, however famous they are, is that more often than not, there are long boring bits that don't translate well onto the screen. However, having recently thoroughly enjoyed Will Smith's interpretation of Muhammad Ali, and hearing that Jamie Foxx gave the performance of a lifetime as Ray Charles, I decided it was worth a go. I am not particularly familiar with Ray Charles' music, although I realised during the course of the film that I knew more about it than I had realised and I think that most people will have a similar experience. It certainly isn't necessary to be familiar with the music or the man, although it would enhance the viewing experience.

Jamie Foxx is truly superb as Ray Charles. As the legend only died in 2004, I have seen him on television and was always captivated by his habit of swinging from side to side while talking. Foxx manages to imitate this perfectly, as well as the facial expressions. However, his skills go further than just looking like Ray Charles; I was completely convinced for the course of the film that he was Ray Charles - it really is a performance that drags the viewer in. Foxx really came up trumps when he had to portray Ray on drugs and Ray in rehab - those scenes are the most poignant of the whole film. There has been some criticism of Foxx for not having sung the songs himself - unlike Joaquin Pheonix in Walk the Line with much success - personally, I don't think this is at all important, because the chances of finding someone who sings as well as Ray Charles are not high and I would far rather have listened to the real thing.

Jamie Foxx fills the screen to such an extent that few of the other characters really get a look in. Two actresses deserve a mention for their portrayal of Ray's women - his wife, Della Bea Robinson (Kerry Washington) and his mistress, Margie Hendricks (Regina King). His wife is portrayed as a sad character, which is perfectly understandable as she rarely saw her husband and knew he was both on drugs and sleeping with other women. For whatever reason, she chose to ignore this and concentrated on her growing family. Kerry Washington manages to portray all this very sympathetically, for the most part winning the viewer over whilst making the character seem strong-willed at the same time. Regina King is great as the bolshie mistress (and member of the Raelettes - Ray's backing band), who refuses to take Ray's rubbish lying down. Feisty and rebellious, King has a great opportunity to show off her acting skills and manages to do a great job in the role.

The story starts off quite promisingly as it moves from the present day (which for Ray is the 1950s), back to the 1930s when little Ray was growing up. I particularly liked the flashbacks to the time he spent with his mother, because this shows where Ray got his determination to succeed from; his mother, forced to struggle to survive, was a fighter and was determined that Ray would not curl up and die because of his disability. The flashbacks were also the most visually attractive part of the film - I particularly liked the shots of a tree hung with coloured bottles, which Ray is to remember with great fondness in later life. Apart from that, the rest of the film is a rather visually boring collection of scenes from Ray's life and little attempt is made to step it up a little.

Unfortunately, the flashbacks make up only a small part of the film. The rest is a rather disjointed mess of one highlight in Ray's life after another. I appreciate that director Taylor Hackford was trying to tell the story of Ray's life as accurately as possible. The problem is that watching him move from one record company to another, from one mistress to another, playing in one club after another, interspersed with shots of him shooting up and occasionally getting arrested just doesn't make for inspiring watching. The best parts, for me, were those that he spent with his family and when we see him struggling with his drug problem - unfortunately, these parts aren't long enough to fill out the film. By the time the first hour had gone by, I was bored and seriously considered switching off. I eventually did, and then came back to it the next day. Thankfully, the second hour or so does pick up, but I can quite understand that some people might not get that far.

There is a UK rating of 15 on this film and I think that is about correct. There is very little nudity, sex or swearing, but some of the scenes where Ray is abusing drugs are a little close to the bone. They aren't graphic enough to be able to teach viewers how to shoot up, but there are detailed pictures of the implements that he uses to do so. In other countries, the rating seems to be 12, however, so perhaps I am being overly cautious.

I think fans of Ray's music will get the most out of the film. There are some stunning tracks that even I recognised - the most famous probably being 'Georgia on My Mind' and 'Hit the Road Jack'. As mentioned earlier, the recordings are original ones - Jamie Foxx did not attempt to imitate the singing voice as well as the actions - which, for me, made the music all the more enjoyable because I knew it was authentic. I also learned a lot about his music - I hadn't really known before that he strayed into country music territory with the album entitled 'Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music', although his own particular brand of music was really jazz and blues. It probably hasn't changed my liking for rock music above all else, but at least I had the chance to appreciate good music, and I do recognise that it is good music. From that point of view, this film is a great introduction for younger people in particular to a genre of music that is perhaps out of their comfort zone.

There are extras with the DVD. First of all, there are two versions of the film: the theatrical version and the extended scene version. Whatever you do, choose the theatrical version. The other version is basically the theatrical version with extended scenes clumsily inserted into it at approximately the right moment. This makes watching extremely disjointed and is very annoying. I would much rather that the extended scenes had been collected together so that viewers could watch them separately if they so wish. Then there is a feature commentary by director Taylor Hackford that accompanies the theatrical version of the film - this needs to be switched on through the special features section. Finally, there is a descriptive audio feature for the visually impaired. I was quite disappointed - I would have liked a behind the scenes documentary or a documentary about Ray's life, but that wasn't to be.

There are definitely a lot of positives to this film. I loved Jamie Foxx's performance, and I certainly learned a lot about Ray Charles and his music, and that is a good thing. However, much of the film was dull and monotonous and I really struggled at times not to turn it off. I am so glad that I didn't see it in the cinema - at two and a half hours it really is way too long and although I can imagine that the director wanted to do justice by Ray's life, he did so to the detriment of audience pleasure. I recommend this film if you are interested in Ray Charles and his music, or simply want to appreciate Jamie Foxx's fine acting; otherwise, I think you may find the film too tedious unless split up into manageable chunks. Just about recommended.

The DVD is available from play.com for £5.99, but I picked mine up in Asda for just £2.
