Remy isn't your average rat - his pinkish nose doesn't get buried in trash cans, and God forbid that any previously used or tainted food make its way past his buck-teeth! Nope, Remy is a rat of distinction, a fine food connoisseur and a culinary genius.
When Remy is separated from his extensive family and ends up in Paris, as luck would have it, in the sewers beneath Auguste Gusteau's renowned restaurant, he is, literally, in rat heaven. One night, as he is chatting (and spying inside the restaurant's kitchen) with his imaginary friend, the deceased chef Gusteau, he notices that the kitchen 'garbage' boy has knocked over a pot of soup, and in a panic is adding to the contents of the pot so no one will notice his blunder. Horrified that the human is ruining the soup, Remy, with Gusteau coaxing him into action, attempts to save the situation - in this case, the soup!
Managing to save the soup, Remy is, however, caught by the 'garbage' boy, Linguini, who hides him beneath a colander just as the evil chef, Skinner, enters the kitchen. When the soup turns out to be a success, the chef, irritated that a 'garbage' boy should surpass him in the kitchen, tells Linguini that he has to repeat his exploit and recreate the soup the next day. Meanwhile, panicked, Remy manages to escape, but not before he is seen by Skinner, who then orders Linguini to take Remy away and kill him. Luckily for Remy, Linguini isn't the 'killing' type.
When Linguini realises that Remy can actually understand him, and communicate to a certain extent, he asks Remy if he can re-create the soup. When Remy nods his head, Linguini then asks Remy if he can help him make the soup the next day. Remy agrees, and the two become fast friends... but then, as life would have it, complications set in...
'Ratatouille' is a fabulously entertaining movie, brilliantly written, and definitely expertly put together... the animation, as always with a Disney Pixar partnership, is spectacular. The quality of the animation is second to none, and although the cast ARE animated characters, there is a depth to them that is both childishly inspiring and naively charming. What a pleasure it is to be able to watch such a fabulous movie - a work of art... literally.
This is a film that provokes a smile, a giggle and an overwhelming sensation of happiness... a movie that is suitable for people of all ages, and guaranteed to fascinate and entertain. It is absolutely no wonder that 'Ratatouille' won an Oscar for 'Best Animated Feature Film of the Year', and raked in another 39 awards and 21 nominations!
Sheer movie-genius!
