The Railway Children (1970) and Swallows and Amazons (1974) are perfect bedfellows: two ... more
classic children's novels, beautifully and faithfully adapted for the big screen.The Railway Children, is a timeless and enduring affair. After their father is mysteriously taken away, three Edwardian children move to the country where the local railway becomes a source of hope and adventure. Sensitive without being sentimental, the film perfectly captures the magical world of childhood and recently featured in the BFI's list of the 100 greatest British films of all time.Swallows And Amazons concerns four children holidaying with their mother in the Lake District in the 1920s. The children are allowed to set sail for a nearby island in their boat, Swallow, but soon realise that the island is also the territory of two other girls, whose vessel is named the Amazon. Boasting beautiful period detail, Claude Whatham's film is an idyllic tale that brings all the excitement and camaraderie of Arthur Ransome's book to life with wit and humour.
The Railway Children(1970) andSwallows and Amazons(1974) are perfect bedfellows: two ... more
classic children's novels, simply and faithfully adapted for the big screen. Together they evoke a poignant nostalgia for the periods in which they are set--Edwardian and 1920s England, respectively--and for the childhood of anyone who has grown up watching them. Sentimentality reigns, of course, but it's never cloying. The truthfulness of the juvenile performances, balanced with restrained sympathy from the adults, sees to that.Flourishing under Lionel Jeffries' delicate direction, Jenny Agutter dominatesThe Railway Childrenas the oldest daughter of a family thrown on hard times when their father is wrongly sent to prison. They avert a train disaster, save an imperilled steeple chaser and reunite an exiled Russian with his wife, all with equal enterprise. Happy endings prevail after every crisis. And no number of repeat viewings can ever diminish the impact of father's return. One of the most expert tear-duct work-outs in film history, it hits the spot every time.Perhaps the lack of such a pivotal scene has keptSwallows and Amazonsin the relative shade. But its gentle appeal survives with equal charm, not least in the resourcefulness of the eponymous children and the period detail. Together this pairing makes a double bill to treasure, and a piquant reminder that Disney doesn't have a complete monopoly on the rich heritage of children's cinema.On the DVD:The Railway ChildrenandSwallows and Amazonsis presented in standard 4:3 picture format, from so-so prints, and with acceptable mono soundtracks. Both films envelope the viewer in a comforting Sunday-afternoon haze. There are no extras, apart from scene indexes. --Piers Ford

Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome
~~~Setting~~~
Swallows and Amazons was written in 1930, an adventure story aimed at children and the first of a series of 12 novels for which their author is most well known. Set in the Lake District, it follows the adventures during one summer holiday of the Swallows (brothers and sisters John, Susan, Titty and Roger) as they camp on an island of adventure, make enemies and then friends with the Amazon pirates (Nancy and Peggy), solving mysteries and chasing thieves. It is a very tame, but very charming novel, seemingly enjoyed by children and adults alike.
I bought and read it earlier this year after visiting a permanent exhibition on Arthur Ransome in the Museum of Lakeland Life in Kendal. It is so evocative of the Lake District that it is a pleasure to read for this alone.
