Sadly I missed Racing Stripes in the cinema but quickly got hold a copy once it became available on DVD and I am very glad that I did.
The film, is a classic, focussing on a baby zebra who is left behind, in a severe thunderstorm by the travelling circus. The cure little fellow is found by a young girl takes her back to the small farm) that she and her Father run - of course all the animals and the Zebra whom is soon christened Stripes can talk. After a little persuasion her Father agrees that she can keep Stripes on the farm which is located next to a championship racing stable and track.
It soon expires that the girls Mother was a championship jockey who sadly died in a racing accident and her Father was a championship trainer - but since the death of his wife he could no longer face the task of training the animals he feels was responsible for his wife's death. Instead he relies on the farm for income, so times are very hard for he and his daughter.
Stripes has the time of his life on the farm with the other animals including the sharp witted pelican, ironically named Goose who is played by Joe Pantoliano. The film is almost stolen by the comedy characters, the primary one being a Cockerel called Reggie played by Jeff Foxworthy and two flies, Buzz and Scuzz, who are voiced by Harvey from the So Solid Crew and David Spade.
As Stripes happily plays in the fields, one of his favourite things is to race the Post van up the drive as he delivers the daily mail and people soon realise he is fast, very fast. Add this on top of the fact that Stripes is constantly being teased by the thoroughbred race horses in the next field about how he will never be as good as a real race horse both he and all concerned are keen to enter him into the big race of the year.
What follows is extensive training, a little love interest between stripes and a cream race horse and a great finally - what I won't spoil.
I though the film was extremely entertaining, funny and touching even for a 28 year old with no kids. The bonus features are also great and include an alternative ending (which I don't think is half as good as the one they used), behind the scenes footage of how the producers / creators made the animals talk (the film is not animated but uses real actors and animals), Sting and Bryan Adams interviews on producing the amazing soundtrack, interviews with array of stars who provided the voices plus more.
