Jack Bruno is an ex-con who has turned over to the good side and now works in a normal job as a taxi driver in Las Vegas. But when he picks up two teenagers who want to be dropped off in the middle of the dessert, his day becomes a lot more exciting. He has a shock when he finds out that the human-looking pair are actually aliens and are being chased by the US government who have stumbled upon the siblings' spacecraft. Also on their tail, is Syphon, another alien sent from a different planet to destroy the teenagers. With the help of UFO expert, Dr Alex Friedman, who just happens to be presenting a scientific lecture in town, Jack risks his own life in attempting to protect the children. Whilst dodging their deadly pursuers, the unlikely team must prevent the Earth from being invaded by Syphon's planet and also rescue their well-protected spaceship from the depths of Witch Mountain.

For some reason most people expect wrestlers to be poor actors but Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, who's actually done pretty well in the acting world, was great in this. His huge bulk made him the perfect form of protection for the children and he managed to add a touch of humour with his sarcastic lines and facial expressions. Playing a simple cab driver may have been a little too lowly a part for him though but his huge muscles and bulk did come in handy at various points in the film and he did get to engage in quite a bit of action. Despite having that look and feel of being a tough guy and suiting the wrestler image perfectly, he does surprising well in family movies with kids.
The two children in the film who played the part of the aliens, did this very well and remained fairly quiet throughout which gave them a mysterious persona. They have some incredible powers such as teleporting and moving objects with their mind which makes the film much more exciting and magical. Because they were in the form of human children, I think this immediately puts the audience on their side as we can relate more to them rather than the small green things that we usually associate with aliens.
There was only really one part of the film which I didn't like and which was not at all realistic and that came in the form of Syphon. He didn't have a human form so was immediately more scary and intimidating but he didn't look in the slightest like an alien but more like a robot - not that the children looked like aliens either but human form is more realistic than robot. He looked more like something out of Star Wars and I just felt this didn't fit with the general idea of aliens that the film carried.
Race to Witch Mountain is a remake of the 1975 film Escape to Witch Mountain which has been modernised to create a much more exciting and adventurous film. With Disney's spark of magic, and lots of action and special effects, this makes a brilliantly fun movie which will be entertaining for the whole family to watch.
As I was watching the film I could just imagine what a perfect name and ride this would make at the Disney parks so I'm hoping that it will spring up somewhere within the next few years!
