Hello everyone, this will be my first review since Ciao.com's integration with Bing, unfortunately all my previous reviews can't be viewed but i will be delivering a huge list of new reviews starting with this one.
Michael Rymer directs this adaption of Anne Rice's novel Queen of the Damned.
The story revolves around a vampire named Lestat who has just awoken from a long sleep. After he awakes he meets a band and becomes their lead singer. The band becomes a huge hit and the rest of the vampires living throughout the world don't like Lestat's public profile, and decide to attact Lestat at one of his massive concerts. Lestat also meets up with the man who made him, Marius, who warns Lestat of this and also of another ancient vampire Akasha, who has also just awoken, she is very powerful but finds a certain interest in Lestat. She then interferes at the concert and takes Lestat. Another story involves a woman named Jesse, a researcher of paranormal studies who meets Lestat and is also attracted to him and he is also attracted to her. However, Jesse has a past of her own, she is actually related to a vampire herself, her Aunt Marharet is an ancient vampire as well.
I have to be honest, Queen of the Damned is not my favorite Anne Rice novel, it wasn't a terrible novel but it wasn't great either. The screenplay for this movie is really goofy and a lot of the dialogue isn't well thought out..
The acting is pretty mixed up, some is good and a lot is bad. Stuart Townsend plays Lestat in this movie and looks nothing like the character described in the book. Usually flaws like this is saved by the actors acting but unfortunately that isn't the case with Townsend. In his own right, he is a good actor but for some reason he just seems to have trouble with this character and his acting is very wooden throughout the movie. And of course Aaliyah plays Akasha and unfortunately she passed away after production for the movie had ended (another great talent gone too soon). Aaliyah doesn't do too bad of a job with Akasha, her acting does get a little shaky in some scenes but overall her performance is good. Marguerite Moreau plays Jesse and does a very good job and, in my view, gives the best performance from the younger cast. Vincent Perez as Marius is good but seems a bit over the top on some occasions. Lena Olin as Maharet is actually pretty good and while her screen time is very short, she is a stand out.
CGI is really the strong point of this movie. The effects are very creative. I love how the vampires fly in this movie. The action has its up and down moments, i love the final scene in the movie but some scenes put comedy into the scene, which doesn't work at all.
Overall, on its own, it can be pretty entertaining but a lot of the movies flaws really keep it from seeing the light of day.
