I got this film today and I watched it within a couple of hours of owning it and I have to say this is probably one of the top horror films I own.
Story
Quarantine is a remake of [Rec] (2007). Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) opens the film shooting her opening part for the news. Angela and her filming partner Scott Percival (Steve Harris) show us around the fire station. We follow them as they travel around with two firefighters (Fletcher (Johnathon Schaech) and Jake (Jay Hernandez) as they go out on a call. They arrive at a building and little do they know the horros contained within the building. The frightened residents gather in the hall as a couple police officers and Angela and Scott go and investigate upstairs. They come across an old lady (Mrs. Espinoza, played by Jeannie Epper) who is bewildered and panicky. She looks like she's got some sort of injury but once Scott shines his light on her it becomes apparent that it's not what it seems. Within a few seconds she grabs one of the police officers and bites him on the neck. From then on we watch as the residents are infected and turn until there is no one left. We discover that this isn't just any old situation, the crew and the residents are quarantined in the building and anyone attempting to escape will be shot dead. We only know the story because of the footage that is left behind...
I guess this storyline has been done before (i.e I Am Legend, 28 Days & Weeks Later) but Quarantine brings a new threat along with it. Before we never really saw how the virus would develop and the affect it would have. This time, we see how the infection spreads within a short space of time and how people easily loose their sanity. I felt this had a deeper impact than the three movies I've mentioned and the horror wasn't overdone to the point where it would become cheesy. The only thing about this film that is a slight letdown is the beginning. It takes a while to get going and I was so tempted to fast forward. Once the action begins, you are gripped to the rest of the film.
Characters/Performances
Congratulations to anyone that had to play an infected! You would have to be quite energetic and you'd have to make sure you were giving it 100% otherwise it would look fake. Jennifer Carpenter's performance seems a little wooden at the start, but once the film gets going she plays her part much better. The story was very believeable and realistic, partly due to the performances.
Special Effects
The effects were very good. The infected looked real, and I like the way the film was shot. This made the film look better and it suited for the type of film they were trying to shoot. All the blood and foam didn't look cheap and fake either. The problem is when you watch the special features to see how things were done it spoils it a bit. Don't watch these until AFTER the film! (yes, some people watch these first!).
Comparison & V.F.M
All these films have the same theme and the same basic storyline but all these films are very well made and I wouldn't say this was any better or worse. Try not to compare this film to others whilst watching it, I did and I ended up getting confused.
I got this from Tesco for a fiver. Very good bargain, when I first wanted Quarantine it was at least £11. Anything up to ten pounds is good but to be priced higher it would need to be a 2 Disc DVD. There aren't loads and loads of special features.
So go on, give Quarantine a go! I'm not saying that this film will suit you just because it's a horror, but if you like the more realistic and gory styles then I'd recommend this film to you.
Advantages: Very well made, casted, acted, everything. Disadvantages: They can't take full kudos for the script as this is a re-make.
...it was really quite good. Quarantine is an American remake of the Spanish movie 'Rec', which I had previously watched a bit of but turned it off as it failed to live up to my expectations of a fast-paced zombie movie such as 28 days later. I probably should have given it a go and watched it all the way through, however, since it is not actually a zombie movie, more a zombie-ish movie blended with a bit of Blair Witch Project and the slow pace is ... ...a real life fire station, as a tv crew consisting of Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and Scott Percival (Steve Harris) film a documentary about fire-fighters. This part starts off a little slow and it is a little difficult to get into the characters as all their general banter feels a little scripted, but I guess the point here is the fire-men are not used to being on camera or to having a hot lady presenter following them around the station. They ...

...is yet another American remake, Quarantine being based on the original Spanish horror [REC]. The film shows the footage of a news team who accompany a fire crew on the night shift, filming a documentary about the life and work of the fire department. The news crew is composed of a young female reporter, played by Jennifer Carpenter (that's her shown on the front cover of the DVD case), and her camera man. The film takes a sinister turn when the fire ... ...possible exits. A state of quarantine is declared. The trapped fire crew, police officers, reporters and residents of the apartment block are then subjected to a night of fear, panic and chaos as they try to escape the building and attempt to find out the truth about what is going on. And all along, the infection starts to spread. OVERVIEW: The film is shot in the style of a documentary in-the-making, so is similar in style to films such as Cloverfield ...

Stars – Columbus Short, Jay Hernandez, Jennifer Carpenter
Whats the plot? – TV presenter Angela Vidal (Carpenter) and her cameraman are doing a special news piece on the local fire department. Its all fun and games swinging down the pole etc until the fire crew must answer a call out. The TV crew join them and come to large apartment building where there has been a disturbance. I don’t want to spoil the plot but needless to say this isn’t a routine ... ...Whats it like? – I approached this film nervously having absolutely hated Jennifer Carpenter in the brilliant series Dexter although I must say she was very good in this film. The film is shot in ‘real time’ meaning you really do feel like you are there as the events roll out, and the shooting style designed to look at though you are seeing the whole film through the cameraman really puts you in the middle of things. This is especially great for ...

After seeing the trailer i was interested in watching this film but like most films i go to the cinema and its nothing but a dissappointment all the good parts are advertised in the trailer and it was a waste of £6 going to the cinema. But after giving in and renting this film i was pleasently suprised i enjoyed this film thoroughly if your afer suspenceful horrors i urge you to check it out. Its starts off as a reporter following a fire brigade ... ...until they get to an apartment and it all kicks off from there i wont get into it any further as i will give the story but a very jumpy film from where they arrive until just before the end, and i am not to sure about the end most dissapointing part of the film

TERRIBLE. Before buying this i checked IMDB for reviews, on there it got a 6.5 so i foolishly thought it would be good. This filmed in a 'documentary style' i.e. bumping and very unrealistic. If that isn't your cup-of-tea (its filmed blairwitchy style) then stay away from this. I would call it a horror or even a zombie movie either. Basically some people are stuck in a building under 'quarantine'. The film focuses heavily on the terrible terrible ...

Fans of the handheld camerawork of CLOVERFIELD and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT will find much to like in this remake of Spanish film REC. Jennifer Carpenter (DEXTER) stars as a TV journalist who finds herself far too close to the action of her latest story. When she and her cameraman (Steve Harris, THE PRACTICE) start filming an 'average' incident at an apartment building, they realize that one of the building's tenants is the victim of a horrific contagious disease and quarantine will keep them from escaping.

‘A visceral, camera-shuddery ride into foamy-mouthed zombie hell’ (Empire, 29/01/2009)
QUARANTINE director John Erick Dowdle and co-writing brother Drew wisely stick close to the told-from-the-cameraman's point-of-view template of the terrific original (Entertainment Weekly, 13/10/2008)

DVD Description
A faithful adaptation of the 2007 Spanish film REC, QUARANTINE chronicles the outbreak of a rabies-like disease in a Los Angeles apartment building and the struggle of the unaffected residents to stay alive after the authorities trap them inside in an effort to contain it. Equal parts BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and 28 DAYS LATER, the film is presented through the eye of a video camera, putting the audience in the middle of the action and creating a heightened level of intensity and realism. Television reporter Angela (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman, Scott (Steve Harris), are covering the goings-on at a firehouse for a program about night shift workers. As she clowns around with two flirty firemen (Jonathan Schaech and Jay Hernandez), an alarm sounds, and a truck is dispatched--with Angela and Scott on board---to an apartment building where an old woman has seemingly lost her mind. The woman bites one of the firemen and is soon killed, but when more tenants turn up with the same disorder, it's clear that a chain reaction is occurring. Unfortunately for Angela and the rest of the uninfected residents, the authorities have quarantined the building---but she and Scott continue to document the tragic and terrifying events inside the building as those inside are one by one transformed into bloodthirsty monsters.
Director John Eric Dowdle, whose film THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES also used a pseudo-documentary approach in detailing the crimes of a serial killer, creates a sustained level of chaos and fear that will have all but the most seasoned horror fan cowering in the corner. Though the shaky camerawork may be a bit difficult to take for those prone to motion sickness, it--along with a complete absence of music--gives the film a startling realism and immediacy to accompany its stomach-churning descent into full-on hopelessness and dread.
