Every Christmas, I buy a game or two; one for all the family to play together from the little tots to the great grandparents and one for those quieter moments when everyone is sated with food and drink and the children are either busy with their toys or gone to bed. Up until now, we have opted for board games however this year with advancing technology our choice for the latter was QI: The most Quite Interesting interactive quiz game according to Home Entertainment weekly.
The game is based on the BBC2 quiz hosted by Stephen Fry. The object of the game is quite simple; just select your answer from the four options given without falling into the trap of selecting the obvious but wrong answer. I am a big fan of the programme enjoying Stephen Fry's velvety delivery and the often clever and witty responses from the contestants.
Sounds easy! Wrong!! Anyone who ever watched the show will know how obscure and difficult the questions can be.
There are seven caterories to work though each with about 50 questions. Each question has to be answered correctly before you are able to move on to the next. If you answer incorrectly, you are given a second chance before being sent back to the beginning in disgrace. If by some chance you get to the end of the section answering all the questions correctly you are rewarded with a secret letter. Collect all the letters from each section and solve the conundrum. Get this right and you can claim the right to log online and claim a prize.
The director of the DVD, Ian Lorimer has converted the television programme to the interactive quiz format quite well. Stephen Fry is filmed asking the questions in his smooth, unruffled, easy-going style. Get the answer worng, and he will condemn you most cuttingly.
The aim of the questions to disply common misconceptions and urban myths is reasonably successful. Fry does give the reasoning and the creation of the myths in his sintillating and stimulating manner. Following a game, you are left filled with newly acquired knowledge albeit mostly useless never-to-be-used knowledge.
The first few times of playing were fun. However, the receptiveness of Stephen Fry's limited recorded retorts soon became a little tiresome and of course the derision has to be general to enable use throughout the different sections of the game. The show of course showcases the quick multi-faceted wit of Fry and the contestants. Also unlike Alan Davies (the week-in week-out contestant), we were incapable of producing the wrong answer with a comedic flair that would evoke the same hilarity those on the show seem to do. Nor did we have quite the same audience to play to. Thus the façade of quasi interactiveness of the game is slowly stripped away.
Maybe if the game was injected with some diversionary cameos from regular contestants, a little more interest may be sustained.
The other disappointing factor of the game is that there is no team option. We did adapt it by splitting the alternate sections for teams to complete and then comparing successes. Not quite the same effect though.
Christmas has come and gone and we still have not managed to get more than a few letters to the anagram. The game will now be put into hibernation, to be brought out again next year when hopefully it will be viewed again with the initial fun and eagerness that it was first viewed this year.
On the whole, I was pleased with my purchase of this Warner Home Video DVD of the QI Interactive DVD game first released on 14th November 2005. Its RRP is £19.99 but you can find it for much less than that: on Amazon for example it is up for grabs at a mere £6.
