I watched this movie with low expectations and must say I was actually blown away! I love my 'X-men' and 'Heroes', but whilst this movie followed a similar sci-fi story line, it was different in that it was not so tightly based on comic-book styled superhero action adventure and instead, I found it more gritty and somehow, realistic. I guess this levels out somewhere between a martial arts movie, with some fast-paced Hong Kong action scenes and a sci-fi mutant hybrid.
The Plot
The story follows a group of young 'gifted' individuals, with various powers, such as psychic "Watchers" and tele-kinetic "Movers". One Watcher, young Cassie Holmes (Dakota Fanning) meets with Nick (Chris Evans), a Mover who joins her on a quest to find a case of money. Their path is riddled with mayhem, as they are pursued by a government agency called "The Division", whilst fighting off a group of Chinese mutant hybrids who have been pursuing them throughout. This movie is a little too complicated to explain in detail, but is a thrilling watch, so you can expect a greater depth to the plot than I am able to explain in a short-review.
Execution
As well as a great story line, the acting is flawless. Dakota Fanning in particular gives a truly outstanding performance, with her dry and somewhat unnerving maturity, teetering on the razor's edge between adolescence and adulthood. In fact, all the elements of a great movie, including great set and soundtrack, come together seamlessly to create this thrilling roller-coaster of adventure, action and emotion that is 'Push'.
Conclusion
Definitely worth a watch, in my opinion! Meanwhile, I shall hopefully anticipate the possibility of a Push 2!
