This 2000 kidnap drama from director Taylor Hackford has a very good all round package. It has some marvellous scenery and some mood-setting lighting which has given this film some praise. It combines the talents of Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe in roles we would not normally associate them with.
The Plot
Alice and Peter Bowman are in South America with Peter an engineer working on a project. Peter is kidnapped by some anti-government guerillas and held captive. Alice hires Terry Thorne, a hostage retrieval expert, who must first ascertain whether Terry is alive or not. The emotional turmoil of such an experience is almost too much for Alice, and the kindness and intensity shown by Thorne leads her to feel very strongly for him, and he in turn finds the feeling mutual.
The Cast and Performances
Meg Ryan is outstanding as Alice. The acting involved in such an emtional character is performed with great skill and attention, and she is very convincing as Alice. Russell Crowe take a turn as a calm character for once, and does so with great emotion. He has great screen presence, there is no doubt about that, and I was impressed with his acting. There are good support roles, particularly from David Morse as the captured Peter.
My Opinion
Despite a good plot and great acting, I could not completely immerse myself in the film, and found it to drag a little in places. Also, at times, the intensity was too much for me. So, I found an imbalance in style here that left me with an uncomfortable feel about the feel. Perhaps this is the subject matter, which is handled competently by Hackford in the chair, but there was something amiss.
That having been said, there is no denying a very good film, and this is of high quality all round. Acting is made easier by the mood of the film, and this suggests to me that Hackford has understood the niche here. I Have to be in the right frame of mind for a film such as this.
Conclusion
A good film that you need to be in the right frame of mind to watch.
I rate this film as 4 stars out of 5. Not the most enjoyable, but parts were outstanding.
