Meg Ryan And Russell Crowe star in hostage drama Proof of Life. Living in South America with wife Alice (Ryan), engineer Peter Bowman (David Morse) is kidnapped by terrorists and ransomed at £3 Million. The only person Alice can trust to get him back is terry Thorne (Crowe), an expert in resolving kidnap and ransom situations and a former SAS soldiers.
Thorne agrees to oversee Peter’s release but as negotiations go from days to weeks to months, he finds himself increasingly drawn to Alice. But things start to get out of hand when Peter makes a failed attempt to escape in the jungle.
Now, not even sure if Peter is still alive, Thorne launches a dramatic rescue bid – with help form old friend Dino (David Garuso) – and the film reaches its long awaited climax. Proof of Life does have its tense moments but there aren’t nearly enough to sustain the excitement over the film’s tow hours-plus running time.
The fact we are kept informed of Peter’s welfare means there are little suspense and even the little suspense and even the finale not as exciting as it could have been. After a dramatic opening sequence the film fails to crank up enough tension so what could have been a really exciting and nail biting thriller instead becomes an average drama, aided by an interesting storyline and Crowe’s awesome screen presence.

I'd never heard of this film before reading your review, and if it's this bad I'm not wondering why I hadn't. Thanks for the info. If I get the chance to watch this I won't take it. Vicky

Advantages: David Caruso and David Morse are good, and the premise is good Disadvantages: Zero chemistry between Crowe and Ryan. Dull and unentertaining
