Ok, the gladiator is back but this time no swords and shields, instead in a versace suit but then again not for long. So what’s gladiator doing here? He is a Kidnapping ransom consultant working for a big private firm, formerly a British army officer, Special forces and he left his job because it was not exciting enough…Now this is a point to ponder for British govt.

The movie starts with a typical old strategy of presenting the hero in a heroic act saving a hostage from Russians just to make sure that you don’t forget who is the hero while getting bored during next 2 hours.
So Let’s start with the main story. Peter an American engineer is kidnapped by anti-government forces in a place called Tecala in Latin America while working on a dam. Terry (Russell Crowe) a hostage negotiator is sent by his company to deal with the matter. When the rebels demand $ 3 million Peter’s employer refuses to pay, as he was not insured for such an incidence and his company calls Terry the negotiator back. Here comes the cute Meg Ryan, Peter’s wife who begs Terry to stay and help her but the cold hearted b*****d goes back leaving her in tears. Is this the end of the movie,…..I wish. But no

After all he is the hero, he comes back to help the poor lady on his own with the help of his friends. For the next 60 days Russell stays at Meg’s house negotiating with the militants on phone, while the militants drag Peter in the mountains. Finally Terry cuts a deal and decides to exchange the cargo. So that’s it, no, God damned Peter tries to escape with another hostage and is injured and caught while the other hostage manages to escape, and Terry and Alice lose contact with the rebels.

The only twist is when the negotiator realise that the militants are not actually going to let go Peter because............ and the only way to save Peter now is to take commando action. So a five minute action with guns and mud on the faces to end our misery. The movie is 2 hours and 15 minutes long and it can be summarised as one long ransom deal gone bad and one commando action. Drama, suspense, climax, tension, No, the only thing that grows in this movie is Peters beard and believe me you don’t want to see it. This movie could have been a lot better if it wasn’t such a drag and the pace wasn’t that slow.

The only reason I watched this movie was the cast but with such an ordinary story, average direction and slow pace there was not much to perform either, but still nearly all characters justify their role. I hate to give away the plot of the movie but here this is just to make sure that you get the whole picture before you decide to spare your time and spend the money to watch this movie. If you like movies on this topic than watch “Negotiator” instead, an excellent movie.

If you are anxious to see this movie due to the fact that Meg fell in love with Russell during the production of this movie and left her husband of 9 years, another famous actor Dennis Quaid, than let me spoil the fun by the news that Russell left Meg for his dogs saying “It’s rough being away from your dogs for six months” so I think it would be more fun seeing his dogs rather than this movie. If you are still interested in watching this movie, go ahead spend your time and money, come back and write an even more frustrating review than this one and make me feel better that I am not the only one, and believe me,…The pleasure is all mine.
My expectations were too high or the movie was very boring, either way I wouldn't rate this movie above average.

MORAL OF THE STORY

If your husband is kidnapped, find a new one who has 3 million dollars rather than spending $ 3 million on the old one.

I was hoping to learn a new meaning of proof of life but for me it is still the good old heartbeat and an ECG strip.

I have been warned. Much as I love Russell Crowe, I think I'll steer clear of this. Thanx.
