take on Jane Austens classicPride andPrejudiceis a real, all-round triumph. The age-old story still holds real resonance, and it follows the tale of five sisters dealing with love, and the many trials and tribulations that brings. There are so many delights to director Joe Wrights take on the story, and his direction is a strong place to start. In spite of having to condense the tale to fit a movie running time, he nonetheless injects a real energy and intelligence to his retelling, and hes served supremely well by his cast. Backed up by strong support by the likes of Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland, its Keira Knightley in the lead turn whos a real surprise here. Her performance is a real joy, and very much at the core of the films success. The film inevitably draws comparison with the superb 1995 BBC adaptation, and while arguably it doesnt quite scale the same peaks, its to the credit of the filmmakers that their version still holds strong. For this is a tremendously enjoyable drama, and one that should continue to find an audience for a long time to come. An excellent film.--Simon BrewShakespeare in LoveOne of the most endearing and intelligent romantic comedies of the 1990s, the Oscar-winningShakespeare in Loveis filled with such good will, sunny romance, snappy one-liners and devilish cleverness that it's absolutely irresistible. With tongue placed firmly in cheek, at its outset the film tracks young Will Shakespeare's overwrought battle with writer's block and the efforts of theatre owner Philip Henslowe (Geoffrey Rush, in rare form) to stage Will's latest comedy, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter. Jokey comedy, though, soon takes a backseat to ravishing romance when the beautiful Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) disguises herself as a young man to wangle herself an audition in the all-male cast and wins both the part of Romeo and, after much misunderstanding, the playwright's heart. Soon enough, Will's pirate comedy becomes the beautiful, tragic Romeo and Juliet, reflecting the agony and ecstasy of Will and Viola's romance--he's married and she's set to marry the slimy Lord Wessex (Colin Firth). The way that Oscar-winning screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard enfold their story within the parameters of Romeo and Juliet (and even Twelfth Night) is nothing short of brilliant--it would take a Shakespearean scholar to dissect the innumerable parallels, oft-quoted lines, plot developments, and thematic borrowings. And most amazingly, Norman and Stoppard haven't forgotten to entertain their audience in addition to riding a Shakespearean roller coaster, with director John Madden (Mrs. Brown) reigning in his huge ensemble with rollicking energy. Along the way there are small gems to be found, including Judi Dench's eight-minute, Oscar-winning turn as a truly regal Queen Elizabeth, but the key element ofShakespeare in Love'ssuccess rests on the milky-white shoulders of its two stars. Fiennes, inexplicably overlooked at Oscar time, is a dashing, heartfelt Will and as for Best Actress winner Paltrow, well, nothing she'd done before could have prepared viewers for how amazing she is here. Breathtakingly beautiful, fiercely intelligent, strong-willed and lovestruck--it's a performance worthy of Shakespeare in more ways than one. By the film's end, you'll be thoroughly won over--and brushing up your Shakespeare with newfound ardour. --Mark Englehart

Have you ever found that after enjoying reading a book you found that the Film just didn’t live up to the book? i have, so i didn’t want to be disappointed after watching the Film of both these books so i didn’t buy the DVD. My partner knew how much i loved the book so last Christmas on our five year anniversary he had bought me a collection of stuff i liked to show me that five years in he still loved me, within this collection i found both these movies and that evening we both sat through them and i was not disappointed. Both films lived up to my expectations, it was romantic, charming with a hint of comedy the perfect recipe for any of my movies.
What is Pride and Prejudice About?
For those of you who haven’t read pride and prejudice which i doubt are very few of you won’t know what happens in the story. Pride and prejudice is mostly based on the five Bennet sisters, as they go through their life looking for the potential suitors for them to marry, their mother aspires to marry her five daughters into wealth, their father is a more simpler man, he lets his daughters choose on who to marry and never forces them to make any decisions. the younger sisters aren’t very much in the limelight although they can be acknowledged. Jane falls for the rich Mr. Bingley but His sister and his best friend keeps them both apart, the man at fault for delaying his friend’s happiness is Mr. Darcy who later falls in love with Elizabeth (‘Lizzy‘). at first Mr. Darcy is shown as a closed person, he does not let himself enjoy anything and speaks very harshly towards Elizabeth, although you instantly know that both these fiery individuals will eventually end up together but as a result of great twists Jane Austin towards the end of the book puts these to very opinionated people together. The film runs for about roughly two hours so as you can imagine most of what happens in the novel is cut out of the film but still after watching the movie you know what's happened, if i was the director i would have put more aspects of the story in but the Joe Wright has done and absolutely brilliant job with this, he has taken a great story and made it into something out of this world.
What is Shakespeare in Love about?
Shakespeare in love is a beautiful story and is very close to my heart. It gives us a slight glimse into to Elizabethan theatre, with the dreams of a young woman who aspires to be in the works of a mans play, you can see her ambition as she goes as far as to dress up as man to act in a play. the cast of this movie should get recognition they offered so much charm and wit and innocence. John Madden has taken the story and showed us the importance and power of words. This movie has to be watched to be enjoyed.
