Despite my long held love of the book, I first saw the A&E mini series adaptation of Pride and Prejudice only last year. One of my flatmates was a great fan of it and one cold and dreary Friday night the five of us, accompanied by duvets, ice-cream and icky microwavable popcorn, sat down to watch it. All I can say, is thank goodness the weather was bad enough that no one volunteered to go out to the video shop for a movie.
Pride and Prejudice is the only one of Jane Austen’s novels that I find myself able to read again and again. It’s a simple enough story told with imagination and wit that have been beautifully preserved in this mini-series. Here, we are introduced to the Bennets, a family of five girls none of whom are married. When a single wealthy man moves to the neighbourhood, the girls’ mother naturally sees an opportunity to marry of one of her daughters. And so we are drawn into the famous love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy; one too proud to admit his feelings, the other too prejudice to see past an arrogant exterior.
As an adaptation of the novel, this series is flawless. Spread across almost six hours, it is never weighed down by heavy exposition or clunky pacing, nor do you find yourself bored with the often meandering plot. Much of the credit for this must go to Austen herself whose dialogue is constantly sparkling and full of wit, and a great deal of it has been put on-screen unchanged. The adaptation should also be complemented on its treatment of Darcy’s character, who we are given a greater insight into than was offered in the novel.
Indeed after seeing the mini-series, it is impossible to imagine anyone other than Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. He’s required to do little more than stand around and look brooding most of the time, but he does it exceptionally well, making me want a Mr Darcy of my very own. As Elizabeth, Jennifer Ehle brings all the quick-wit and determination to the character that one expects, and with it a certain joy for life that seems entirely suiting to Elizabeth. It’s true to say that most of the remaining characters are little more than caricatures, but they are perfectly cast – the slimy Mr Collins (played by David Bamber) is a particular favourite, managing to make my skin crawl every time he appears on screen.
The costumes, on the other hand, are an absolutely delightful sight. Seeing the beautiful gowns that the Bennets wear to their balls almost makes me wish I could have lived in Regency times...if it weren’t for the fact that the chances are I wouldn’t be born into the right class to afford them. If there’s one thing that the BBC are darn good at, its period dramas and no small part of that is due to fantastic costumes and sets that they are able to create. These sets are almost as visually stunning, most especially the ornately decorated hall that the balls are set in, and we are also treated to some excellent location shooting.
In fact, the director, Simon Langton (who had previously directed Upstairs, Downstairs, a BBC period drama series), does an all round excellent job. The scenes of Elizabeth and Darcy dancing, in particular, are wonderful, as they weave in and out of the other dancers, cold and yet flirtatious towards one another.
The DVD itself, however, is somewhat lacking. The only extra that you get is a lacklustre featurette on the making of the mini-series. It’s relatively entertaining, but features only small pieces of information and a few insights into how the novel was adapted for television as they tried to capture the era during which it was set. There is little information on the production of the series and no interviews with either of the two leads. In addition, there’s also the standard cast biographies and previous credits. To offer so little in terms of extras seems like a missed opportunity and is particularly disappointing as this DVD is generally quite expensive.
Despite the poor extras, the DVD is worth buying purely for the mini-series itself. With superb production values and an excellent cast, it is one of the BBC’s best productions of the past decade, and there’s a reason that it launched Colin Firth’s career. It may be six hours long, but the charm of this romantic period piece and the sheer wit of its writer mean you won’t be watching the clock. Colourful and vibrant, this is the definitive adaptation of Austen’s classic novel.
And, look, I made it all the way through the review without mentioning Colin Firth swimming in the lake.

Review of Pride And Prejudice (Anniversary Edition) (DVD)
Advantages: Perfect adaptation of Jane Austen's most popular book Disadvantages: None
This BBC version of Pride and Prejudice from 1995 is widely held to be the best Jane Austen adaptation of all time. Most Jane Austen adaptations are done in movie form and take many liberties with the text (eg the 2005 Keira Knightly movie seemed to replace light sparkling Austen with dark moody Bronte). The 1995 BBC adaptation however was a done as a six-part series and this gave them the space to explore the book in all it's complexity.
I'm not ... ...special on the Making of Pride and Prejudice, which takes you behind the scenes as the director and producer explain how they chose the locations and cast the characters. I was disappointed that they didn't include more specials for this aniversary set - it would have been lovely to see interviews with the cast and to have more Austenography and information on the period the book was set in.

Advantages: Excellent cast of actors, known and unknown Disadvantages: none
If you read my ‘All About Me’ then you will already know that this is my all time favourite film. This review, in my opinion, will never do it justice, but here goes nothing.
First, let me give you a very brief and basic outline of the story:
Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle) is the leading lady, and she is the second of five sisters, she is famous locally for her beauty and elegance. The eldest sister, Jane, played by Susannah Harker, ... ...Mary, Kitty and Lydia are each silly or stupid in their own little ways. Her mother has little sense, is constantly complaining about her imaginary nervous condition and is often very rude to those who she does not approve of. Mr. Bennet, is a negligent father, taking solace in his library and ignoring the going on’s of Longbourn, his estate and their home.
There is an addition to the neighbourhood, as Mr. Bingley arrives bringing with him ...

Advantages: two words for you: 'colin' and 'firth' Disadvantages: this isn't really one, but at times the actors are...too good
Well, I am almost sure that everyone who has purposely sought out an opinion on this video has at least some kind of an idea as to the basic storyline, but for those of you that don't, here is a VERY quick plot synopsis:
Elizabeth Bennet is the second of five sisters, 3 of whom, and her own mother, are ridiculously silly. She and her elder sister are reputed local beauties, in particular the eldest Miss Bennet, or Jane. Enter the rich man from the ... ...false and snobby sisters, and his proud best friend Darcy. Darcy at first insults Elizabeth's beauty, but duly falls for her wit, vivacity, as well as her fine eyes. But did the course of true love ever run smooth? No. And for these two pairs of lovers, it is no different. Can Lizzy and Darcy overcome their 'pride' and 'prejudice'?
Right, now that that's cleared up, we can get on with the review.
Amongst the backdrop of many stately homes throughout ...

...of books, and chanced upon Pride and Prejudice. I thought I have finally come of age and may understand the story and context without being terrorised by the English language. To cut a long story short, I fell in love with the book and became an Austen fan. Since I did not have the privilege of watching Pride and Prejudice while it was on the tele, I could not resist getting a copy of it on DVD.
This is the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride ... ...or was it that her pride was hurt?!? I don't know, but you get the drift.
For those who have seen the series on BBC, you will agree that this version was very well done. Not only did it follow the book closely, the scenery, photography, costumes, houses, furniture etc were all made to look authentic and realistic. The dialogues! I have often despair that adaptations fell short of the books because the dialogues were dissimilar and did not convey ...

DVD Description
The bicentennial production of Jane Austen's novel is given the most lavish treatment yet, in this acclaimed television mini-series. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE stars Jennifer Ehle (POSSESSION) as Elizabeth Bennet, a witty and headstrong young woman in 19th century England. When she meets the standoffish Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth), they initially clash, but there may be something deeper behind their animosity. Firth (BRIDGET JONES' DIARY) sets the standard for period film heroes with his portrayal of Mr. Darcy, a character sure to make both minds and hearts race. The classic novel of manners, society, and love includes much of Austen's rich commentary on human nature, and features extensive, gorgeous location shooting in and around historic English country homes.
