Alongside Ghost, another romantic comedy drama, Pretty Woman dominated the box office of ... more
1990. The movie revitalised Richard Gere's career, and made a superstar of Julia Roberts, launching her on a string of hugely successful romantic comedies including My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), Notting Hill (1999), and, reuniting her with Gere and Pretty Woman director, Garry Marshall, The Runaway Bride (1999). Inevitably the movie's theme song is Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman", sounding fresh as ever. And if that is a typically male view of feminine attractions, Natalie Cole tells the other side of the story with the unrepentant "Wild Women Do". David Bowie provides an update of one of his greatest hits, with "Fame 90" and Robert Palmer describes "Life In Detail". The remainder of the album is a snapshot of up-and-coming acts at the beginning of the 90s, with Go West's massive hit, "King Of Wishful Thinking" and Roxette's chart smash "It Must Have Been Love" setting the agenda for slick, well produced power-pop. As nostalgia for the time just before dance took over the charts, or simply as a highly polished souvenir of one of the most popular movies ever made, Pretty Woman requires, as Peter Cetera appropriately adds, "No Explanation". --Gary S. Released in 1990 and directed by Garry Marshall (the same guy who directed the movie Beaches and also apparently directed some Happy Days and Mork & Mindy episodes), this film is a story about a rich businessman and a hooker, and their chance encounter on a Hollywood street.
Edward, played by Richard Gere is a suave, extremely wealthy businessman specializing in taking over companies and then selling them off piece by piece. Following his break up with his girlfriend over the phone after a nasty argument at the start of the film, Edward takes his friend's car and speeds away, getting lost on Hollywood Boulevard looking for his hotel. He stops en route to ask Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts), a hooker walking the streets, for directions. Directions which, says Vivian, will cost $10:
Edward: "You can't charge me for directions." Vivian: "I can do anything I want to Baby, I ain't lost." Edward: "Alright, okay. Alright - you win, I lose - got change for twenty?" Vivian: "For twenty I'll show you personal”
And so begins the start of a fantastic celluloid relationship. Edward is so taken with Vivian, finding her attitude to him refreshing, if nothing else, that he offers her money to spend more time with him, $300 for the night, rising to $3,000 for a whole week with him, accompanying him on the "rich and famous" circuit, where it is frowned upon for a man of Edward’s status to be seen alone.
Edward: "I will pay you to be at my beck and call." Vivian: "Look I'd love to be your beck and call girl, but um, you're a rich good looking guy, you could get a million girls free." Edward: "I want a professional. I don't need any romantic hassles this week."
The film follows the ups and downs that the unlikely pairing find themselves encountering – Vivian with her troubles, dressed as a hooker, trying to buy a cocktail dress on Rodeo Drive for her business dinner with Edward that night, and with Edward, and the troubles that he faces, as his heart over-rules his head in a business decision for the first time he can remember.
The story is predictable, and age old, but somehow that doesn’t distract at all from the movie. The two leads have an undeniable chemistry on screen, which sets the feel for the whole film. We have the dashing lead man, the beautiful lead woman and the slime ball colleague of Edward, Stuckey, excellently played by Jason Alexander.
You can follow the ups and downs of this movie, empathising with Vivian when Edward puts her down:
Edward: "I've never treated you like a prostitute." Vivian: "You just did."
Billed as a romantic comedy, this is an ideal film for women and couples – The ultimate chick flick as it were. I love it for the rollercoaster of emotions that you are taken on. The turns that the film takes, the betrayal, the heartbreak, the twists that the film holds. It’s by no means an “edge-of-your-seat” film, but it IS a film that will pull you along by your heart strings.
Costing around a tenner online, with the cheapest VHS copy I’ve seen online being £9.34 on ChoicesDirect.co.uk, including P&P, you can actually get this cheaper in most stores, with HMV selling it for less than £5 a week or two ago.
All fairy tales have fantastic endings. Does this film? Well, you’ll have to get it out and see for yourself!
So, you grab the tissues, I’ll grab some ice cream, we’ll both grab the video from Blockbusters and we’ll settle down to this fantastic film later on tonight. One last thing: If I forget to tell you later, I had a really good time tonight.

Pretty Woman was released in 1990, and is one of the ultimate chick flicks. For me, most of those films are from the 1980s - for some reason they just got it right then. Pretty Woman is allowed into the club because it's only just into the 1990s, and because it's so darn good. Starring the dream team of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman tells the story of Vivian, a hooker working Hollywood Boulevard in LA, and Edward, a millionaire businessman ... ...the title track, Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman, with an absolutely unforgettable riff. Other favourites of mine and tracks which stand out are the very 1980s King Of Wishful Thinking and Wild Women Do, and of course the film's big ballad - Roxette's It Must Have Been Love, a song which I still find moving over 20 years after its original release. Visually, the film doesn't yet look dated. Of course the fashions mark it as a film from 1990, but in terms ...

...Yes, we've all seen it, Pretty Women, probably on of the best loved chick flicks of our generation. Pretty Women is now nearly 20 years old but still of one my favourite films, it has some classic lines and a really heartwarming story. It must be so fun to be able to dress up like that and have all the shop staff wait on you hand and foot and she does come away with some wonderful outfits, even if they are a bit 90's!! The shopping doesn't go smoothly in the beginning though and one of my favourite lines includes the part where she goes back to the snooty lady in one of the boutiques, ...

...the most memorable scenes in Pretty Woman is Vivian singing along to Prince’s 'Kiss' in a giant bubble bath. Despite her profession, Vivian is shown to be sweet and pure. Sometimes, my partner and I get a hankering to watch an old film when we're sitting down together in the evening. We had a little browse through our ever-growing DVD collection and then decided to watch the newest addition to it, which just happened to be PrettyWoman. I hadn't seen it for a few years and fancied something a bit soppy and sweet, so we settled down for a few hours of brilliant entertainment.
PrettyWoman tells us the story of a prostitute, Vivian Ward, who is working on the streets in Hollywood. She happens to be stopped by billionaire Edward Lewis for directions, but ends up getting in his car and accompanying him to his hotel. Edward makes it clear he isn't after her for sex, and the two strike up a week-long business deal. Vivian starts to like the billionaire lifestyle and the friendship between the pair blossoms ...

Then the obvious happens they fall in love, with twists and turns along the way will the two ever get together for real? This film brings a tear to my eye everytime. along which does drive my hubby mad. They songs vary from some slow ballads to some great up tempo songs, I especially like the very famous song which is played when Vivienne goes shopping for clothes. Even hearing this song on the radio it always makes me think of the film.
The DVD which I have is the 15th Anniversary edition which does contain lots of bonus material, included is:-
The Wrap Party Live event
The PrettyWoman Tour in Los Angeles
1990 Production Featurettes
Song 'Wild Women Do' Performed by Natalie Cole
Blooper Reel
An All new Audio Commentary with Director Garry Marshall
I would say that if you have an interest in behind the scenes of a film and getting to know why the director did certain things in the way he did then this is edition of the DVD is definitely worth buying. The blooper reel is also quite funny ...
A handsome businessman hires a hooker to pose as his girlfriend for a week... and falls in love. She on the other hand, wonders whether a straight life with him would be the answer to her dreams...

"...Something special....[Roberts] is so enchantingly beautiful, so funny, so natural and such an absolute delight that it is hard to hold anything against the movie..." (New York Times, p.C20, 23/03/1990)
The Cinderella story that made Julia Roberts a star. While driving back to his Beverly Hills hotel, millionaire corporate raider Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) takes a wrong turn and ends up on Hollywood Boulevard, where he meets prostitute Vivian Ward (Roberts). She steers him back to his hotel, charming him along the way, and he decides to hire her for the rest of the evening. In the morning, Edward realises that he could use an escort for the week, so he hands Vivian $3000 to stay--and sends her on a fantasy shopping spree. What begins as a purely business transaction develops into something more...they fall in love, but can a poor prostitute and a rich businessman really live happily ever after
