Pretty Woman is the ultimate chick flick, ask any woman what their favourite girly film is & 9 times out of 10 you'll hear 'Pretty Woman'. It's probably my favourite film of all time! This is the film that really put Julia Roberts on the map, she had starred in a few small fry films previously like Mystic Pizza & Satisfaction, both from 1988 but it was 1990 when she got her big break in this terrific film about a prostitute that falls for a top lawyer. This film had a very modest $14 million budget & grossed a magnificent $463 million at the box office. It is rated 15 & runs approximately 119 minutes.
The iconic film was released on 1st June 1990 & was greeted with brilliant critique. Despite Julia Roberts not being the big star of this film, she really stole the show in a stand out performance as the 'tart with a heart' Vivian, infact she not only stood out in the film she was offered many film roles solely from her brilliant performance in Pretty Woman & eventually went on to become one of the highest paid actresses ever & was the first
actress to ever pick up a $20 million pay check for her role in the brilliant 'Erin Brockovich. Richard Gere plays the Edward, a charming, wealthy & very successful lawyer that has just split from his girlfriend. At the time, Richard Gere was already an established actor who starred in films such as Internal Affairs & An Officer & A Gentlemen.
This is the story of Vivian, a girl struggling to make ends meat who works as a prostitute at night to pay the bills. One night while out on the streets a man pulls up in a Lotus, Vivian thinks her lucks in so approaches the car. Sat in the car is Edward Lewis, a successful lawyer who has borrowed his colleagues car to get back to his hotel room. He asks Vivian for directions & eventually (for a fee) she decides to drive him to his hotel as he has trouble driving the sports car himself!
On arrival Edward invites Vivian in, knowing fully well that she's a prostitute & he receives some very weird looks when he walks in with Vivian. The pair go up to his room & thinking that this is just another job Vivian comes onto Edward who respectfully declines her advances. The pair end up getting along & Edward ends up paying Vivian just for her company. She stays the night & afterwards asks her to be his assistant & pays her a substantial amount.
The pair are quickly falling for each other but none of Edward's friends or colleagues know that she isn't the prim & proper lady she makes out to be & is infact a prostitute. Edward doesn't care though, he enjoys Vivian's company, as does she. He's the only man that's ever respected her & not treated her like a slut & she quickly falls in love with the charming lawyer.
This film is simply fantastic! There's no other way of describing it. I don't know anyone (man or woman) that hasn't seen this & if anyone reading this hasn't then go & buy it asap! Pretty Woman is more for the girls but I know guys that have thoroughly enjoyed it too. The acting & the story is brilliant, it's a real opposites attract story which is very well acted by Richard Gere & Julia Roberts. They had such great chemistry that they teamed up again to make The Runaway Bride, another romantic comedy. I enjoyed it but it didn't quite have the spark that Pretty Woman did. I've seen this film so many times & it's one of those that you never tire of watching. The humours great & is done tastefully. I'd recommend this film to anyone that hasn't seen it, you will definitely enjoy it no matter what type of films you're into!
