This has to be one of my all time favourite films and I was so pleased when Father Christmas got me the special 15th Anniversary edition DVD for Christmas!
The film stars Julie Roberts who plays a working street girl who is currently living with her friend and trying to make ends meet. She is out on the street one night when a business man pulls up in his posh car and asks for direction. Vivienne (Julie Roberts) offers to show him personally to his hotel. She learns the mans name is Edward (Richard Gere) and that he is a billionaire.
Edward invites Vivienne to his room and they end up spending the night together. The following morning Edward asking Vivienne if she would be prepared to stay with him for the week and accompany him on his dinners and days out. They agree on the price of $3000 for the weeks work.
Vivienne and Edward are completely different people from different worlds so can they live and work together for the whole week and what will be the outcome when it is time for Edward to leave town????
This film never fails to make me smile. The whole story for the film is great and Julia Roberts and Richard Gere work very well together on screen and both make their characters very believable. The film is mainly a love story but this is not shown at the beginning and it takes the majority of the first half to develop into this.
The supporting actors were also very good and added a lot more depth to the whole story. I particularly like the hotel manager as he added a touch of humour with his character. Also the bell boy who works the lift is also very funny.
The music which is used throughout the film is great and I cannot watch without singing along which does drive my hubby mad. They songs vary from some slow ballads to some great up tempo songs, I especially like the very famous song which is played when Vivienne goes shopping for clothes. Even hearing this song on the radio it always makes me think of the film.
The DVD which I have is the 15th Anniversary edition which does contain lots of bonus material, included is:-
The Wrap Party Live event The Pretty Woman Tour in Los Angeles 1990 Production Featurettes Song 'Wild Women Do' Performed by Natalie Cole Blooper Reel An All new Audio Commentary with Director Garry Marshall
I would say that if you have an interest in behind the scenes of a film and getting to know why the director did certain things in the way he did then this is edition of the DVD is definitely worth buying. The blooper reel is also quite funny.
The film was released by Touchstone Pictures. It was Produced by Arnon Milchan and Steven Reuther, it was Directed by Garry Marshall. The film has a running time of 120 minutes which is a great length. There is a 15 certificate on this film which I feel is slightly too strict, yes there is some strong language and some moderate sex references but nothing more than what children can see on the television any time of the day or night in all the soaps which are on. I personally would have given this film a 12 certificate. ]
I am not sure how much my DVD was as it was a gift but I have seen this for around £3 brand new on Amazon.
I cannot recommend this film highly enough but then again it is one of my all time favourites!
