1990. The movie revitalised Richard Gere's career, and made a superstar of Julia Roberts, launching her on a string of hugely successful romantic comedies includingMy Best Friend's Wedding(1997),Notting Hill(1999), and, reuniting her with Gere andPretty Womandirector, Garry Marshall,The Runaway Bride(1999). Inevitably the movie's theme song is Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman", sounding fresh as ever. And if that is a typically male view of feminine attractions, Natalie Cole tells the other side of the story with the unrepentant "Wild Women Do". David Bowie provides an update of one of his greatest hits, with "Fame 90" and Robert Palmer describes "Life In Detail". The remainder of the album is a snapshot of up-and-coming acts at the beginning of the 90s, with Go West's massive hit, "King Of Wishful Thinking" and Roxette's chart smash "It Must Have Been Love" setting the agenda for slick, well produced power-pop. As nostalgia for the time just before dance took over the charts, or simply as a highly polished souvenir of one of the most popular movies ever made,Pretty Womanrequires, as Peter Cetera appropriately adds, "No Explanation".--Gary S. of Julia Roberts, in particular) morphed this story of a Hollywood whore into a Disneyfied Cinderella story--and a mainstream megahit. This is the movie that made Roberts a star, her charms helping tremendously to carry viewers over the rough spots in the script (which was originally to be a cynical tale about prostitution called 3000--after the amount of money Richard Gere's character pays the prostitute to stay with him for the week). Gere is the silver-haired Wall Street knight who sweeps streetwalker Roberts into a fantasy world of room service at the Regent Beverly Wiltshire Hotel and fashion boutique shopping on Rodeo Drive. The supporting cast is also appealing, including Laura San Giacomo as Roberts's hooker pal, Hector Elizondo as the hotel manager, Jason Alexander, Ralph Bellamy and Hank Azaria. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com On the DVD: With a beautiful bubble effect offering a touch of fantasy to the special features menu, the viewer might expect a disc packed with lavish offerings. Unfortunately the extras are a little more spartan than the menu would have us believe, consisting of a theatrical trailer and a cringe-worthy pop video of "Wild Women Do", complete with a bouncing camera and "arty" black-and-white shots. The worst of these features comes in the form of the "production trailer", a useless addition which attempts to briefly summarise the film's underlying themes with inter-cut comments from the actors and directors on the original trailer (already featured in its pure form on the disc) and which offers little additional information of any merit. The disc does, however, come into its own when Gary Marshall takes the helm for the director's commentary: he has an entertaining and amusing narrative style, which is upbeat and direct like his film, and his comments really bring to life the fairy-tale narrative. Add to this a widescreen 1.85:1 presentation, which will make you feel as if Richard Gere has just swept you off your feet. --Nikki Disney
...which just happened to be Pretty Woman. I hadn't seen it for a few years and fancied something a bit soppy and sweet, so we settled down for a few hours of brilliant entertainment.
Pretty Woman tells us the story of a prostitute, Vivian Ward, who is working on the streets in Hollywood. She happens to be stopped by billionaire Edward Lewis for directions, but ends up getting in his car and accompanying him to his hotel. Edward makes it clear he isn't ... ...Vivian is a hooker?
Pretty Woman is simply one of the classic films of all time - it's popularity will stay on a constant line because it is like a fairytale and just so enjoyable to watch. Although the story is wonderful, for me it is the performances by the two lead actors which make this film the classic that it is. Julia Roberts, in her first major film role, and the one which shot her to the gigantic levels of fame she has since achieved, takes ...

Advantages: Cast, Very Funny Disadvantages: None
Pretty Woman
This is the story of a rich successful business man who hires a hooker to pretend to be his girlfriend for the week, as they endure numerous business dates with clients. Truly professional until they fall for each other..
Edward Lewis (gere) is a top business man, and he has come into the city for a week. On his journey he comes across Vivian, who gives him directions to a hotel. Vivian (Roberts) is a small time hooker, who hooks to ... ...and she made a very pretty hooker. Julia has the most beautiful smile; I think that's what makes her so amazing, her smile.
Her character went through so many different feelings throughout the film, and Julia perceived them so well.
Richard Gere played the top class businessman, he was brilliant, he had the luck, the charm and the acting skills to pull it off, he is a natural. He remained a professional businessman throughout the movie, and you ...

Advantages: The best cinderella story of ever! Funny, intelligent and totally addictive! Disadvantages: Makes me so jealous !
Well I can honestly say that this really is, just like in the title, the cinderella story of all time. Forget the little mice running around singing songs about you and who needs a fairy god mother when you've got ... *sigh* ... Richard Gere.
Background.
**She walked off the street, into his life and stole his heart.**
Vivienne Ward (Julia Roberts) is your average hooker, who got swept into it for the money to pay rent etc. She lives in a shoddy ... ...the rent money to provide for her coke habit.
Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is a very rich corporate raider who makes money from buying and selling companies. He finds it hard to keep relationships, despite the most eligible batchelor, as he is obsessed with working and has never taken a day off in his life.
One night while driving through Beverly Hills, lost, he stops to ask for directions. The Lotus Esprit which he has borrowed from his accountant ...

Advantages: Good for a rainy day Disadvantages: Lacking in substantial humour
After reading the reviews of this film on Amazon, and seeing that it starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, I decided to buy it because I love the romantic comedy film genre. However, I was sadly disappointed. Roberts plays a 'spirited, streetwise diamond', Vivianne, who is picked up by a wealthy business man (Gere) and then paid to pose as his girlfriend for the following week which is full of business engagements. It is a typical rags to riches ... ...takes in the size of the penthouse suite in which she will be staying for the week. As a hooker, the film is dominated by Vivienne's background and lifestyle - which explains the 15 rating - but there is also the oh-so stereotypical change from a rough and ready girl to a beautiful lady. This involves some cheesy scenes in which she is thrown out of expensive fashionable shops, before her billionaire man comes to her aid and insists she is served.
