Predator, Action, Science Fiction, Horror starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Duke, Carl Weathers, Elpidia Carrillo, Jesse Ventura and R.G. Armstrong. The film is dircted by Action legend John McTiernan ("Die Hard", "The Last Action Hero").
When South American Terrorists have American hostages in their territory after a helicopter crash, A military special forces team is sent in to boune them back over into friendly lands. The team is led by "Dutch" Schaefer (Schwarzenegger - "The Terminator", "Total Recall") but the mission was organised by one of his best friends and fellow commando Dillon (Carl Weathers - "Rocky").
But it turns out that there are other reasons for entering the jungle, the helicopter crashed near a terrorist camp site, which Dillon wants to convietly take out. The hostages were never taken by the terrosrists, they were all ready dead, skinned alive.
It is then when one of their own men is killed in an ususual way, it comes to the team's attension that "there is someting out there... and it ain't human". Slowly but surely, they are picked off one by one and it is up to Dutch to get his team (and prisoner played by Elpidia Carrillo - "Solaris") the hell outta there!
The thing that isn't human is of course the Predator, an alien visitor who hunts for sport, sees the heat of its victims, smells the fear of its victoims and kills for the pleasure of killing. Armed with a vast array of alien weapons and technology. He is the hunter and Schwarzenegger is the prey, but like Schwarzenegger is gonna give up that easily?
The Predator is a fantastic example of its genre and is arguably the inspiration for the 'Slasher' genre where a superior evil being kills off its victims one by one. This film however deals with that concept much better than any teen horror. This is a film where you get to see big guys with guns blowing s**t up. Arnie with his M16 and Grenade Launcher combo (reminds me of his role as John Matrix in "Commando"), Jesse Ventura ("The Running Man" another Arnie clasic) gets to carry around a big f**k off Minigun (ironic name for it) that caps of hundreds of rounds a minute and tears down jungle very nicely.
The performances are good yet basic, Schwarzenegger (a man who isn't judged on his acting ability) plays the part of a jungle commando 'Dutch' with little to say well. His fellow actors in role as his team are also good for this destruction derby of a movie. Bill Duke ("Exit Wounds", "Payback") is exceptional as Mac who begins to 'lose it' out in the jungle. There is no one in the film who has a sufficient amount to say but there are a good deal of enjoyable one liners such as:
"If it bleeds, we can kill it."
Surprisingly there is some characterisation with some of the co-stars and the prisoner Anna (Elpidia Carrillo) provides a different angle to the whole situation and, she doesn't provide a love interest to anyone WOW!!!!!!!!!!. All that lovey dovey stuff would destract the comandos from blowing up everything that moves, lives and breathes. And the only female in the film disproves the formula of a screaming, big-breasted, blonde who plays hard to get at first but ends up gagging for it.
The Action by today's standards is still very good with guns, explosions, decapitation and special effects. Yes, the special effects in this film are not what they are in today's big blockbusters. Watch the "Matrix Reloaded" and you'll see how much effects have evolved since "Predator". Admitidly, "Predator" uses no Computer Generated Images as CGI was first used two years later in Cameron's masterpiece "The Abyss" in 1989. With a lack of CGI or really expensive cinema effects, director John McTiernan handles the material well and makes use f what he has to the max. He also has a great sense of time and paces the film expertly, saving the match bewteen Predator and Arnie at the end and no sooner. He also doesn't waste time with unnecessary character development that doesn't accelerate the storyline or add to it. All you need to know is that there is some kind of alien in the jungle and the Commandos are under threat, no more, no less.
Sountrack is synthesised (a true product of the eighties) especially the main theme tune of the film. Der der der de de der, der der der de de der. The rest is orchastrated, I think only one song makes it into the soundtrack and that is in the scene in the Commando chopper. Costume is that of Green Beret, camo outfits and guns, lots of them. Gun people will spot many different models of weapons and have satisfaction in seeing them kick serious ass.
"I ain't got time to bleed"
BOTTOM LINE Predator is a great testosterone fueled way to spend under two hours. It is very entertaining with few moments of humour and many moments of blood, guts, big guns, explosions and all out violence. Highly reccomended stuff as it is imposible to get bored of. I've seen it about dozen times in my foolish youth and i'm not bored of it! The script is one of the most cheesiest scripts I have seen produced uponto the screen that rival James Bond any day. Example; Arnie throwing a knife into a guy and then saying, "Stick around". Brilliant. One of McTiernan's best.
CERTIFICATE : 18 TIME APPROX : 107 minutes
CAUTION strong language strong violence scenes of gory horror
IF YOU LIKE THIS, TRY: Predator 2 - swapping the South American jungle for the LA jungle and swapping Schwarzenegger for Danny Glover to save us
Advantages: Claustrophobic and thrilling, on top of the usual Arnie fayre Disadvantages: Tacked on Spanish farmer lady just a plot afterthought.
Predator (1987)
Dir: John McTiernan Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura, Kevin Peter Hall
For me, Predator is one of Arnie's finer action movies, along with Commando and Total Recall that exemplify the genre. Minus the special effects of later films, it still matches them for action and visceral thrills. Predator is a blend of macho and science fiction. With Die Hard director John McTiernan at the helm it is ... ...troop fall prey to the Predator until just he is left. A life and death jungle struggle ensues..
You can almost sense the testosterone seeping through the screen during the 106 minutes run time of this film. This was one of Arnold Schwarzeneggers first major features and he plays the role of Dutch straight pretty much throughout. No wisecracking, monotone one man army here, Arnie displays a full range with emotions like fear and worry in this movie: ...

Advantages: Classic sci fi, plenty of violence and action, thrilling!!! some tense action to be enjoyed without a doubt Disadvantages: Getting on abit now, was made in 1987, but special effects are ace for the time
...force one by one. The predator makes short work of its prey, using its hightech arsenal of weaponry and utilities it hunts them through the jungle, watching their every move with its infra-red vision. Advantages: Script, action, sound fx, special fx, direction Disadvantages: too much macho posturing, weakish ending.
...thrills in equal measure.
Predator is no more than "Alien" versus "Rambo" for a rumble in the jungle. This could quite easily have been a Z-rated movie ending up on the video shelf with not even a fanfare to cheer it along. However, this film rises above the dross because of three solid elements - Director, John McTiernan (of Die Hard fame); Jim & John Thomas writing a very tight screenplay. And of course a testerone-filled film like this wouldn't ... ...weigh it down. Predator is an action fans dream. It's so masculine & proud of itself you'd be pushed to find a subtle moment throughout. The commandos are all muscular types with 6-pack chests and rippling muscles, sharp one-liners and sweaty brows.
Arnie acts like Arnie always acts....but for a change this kind of scenario & savage environment suits him down to the ground, so we can ignore his male posturing and chewing of huge cigars while keeping ...

Advantages: Excellent special effects which wouldn't be out of place today Disadvantages: none
John Mctiernan is the director of this brilliant action packed blockbuster. If you were to combine Alien and Rambo with a bit of Vietnam into one film this is what you would get.
After being recruited by the CIA Arnold Schwarzenegger leads an elite squad of US Commandos to the center of the South American Jungle where they have been assigned to rescue some milatry hostages held by Guerilla fighters. Instead of what would be a fairly straight foward ... ...hanging from trees and realise they are fighting a much more sinister force. They manage to pick up a women who had hid from the attack and begins to tell them off the evil creature as it follows them through the woods and begins to pick them off one by one in deadly style for sport. Soon Arnie finds himself at battle with a hideous alien creature that is armed with high tech gadgets and wearing a spacesuit which can make him invisable.

Advantages: Great fun, lots of guns, original idea, good extra features Disadvantages: Arnies acting contains more wood than the jungle.
...feel as if you're there with them. The sound effects are astounding, especially those of the weapons and of the Predator itself.
Visuals
I don't know if any work was done on the film before it was transferred to DVD, but the visuals are very clear, and it's only the opening shot of the 20th Century Fox logo that appears dodgy. (McTiernan explains in his commentary that it's because
20th Century Fox refused to let him use a Widescreen version, so he had to stretch a "normal" version).
Director's Commentary
While offering up lots of interesting pieces of information, I found the commentary to be a little 'dry'. It is interesting to hear how McTiernan went about making this, his first full feature, with all the troubles that were associated with working
in Mexico, but he says himself that he hasn't watched the movie in a long time...

Advantages: A nice box, a good game Disadvantages: The film and most of the special features
...I had not seen Predator for about 18 years, despite already having it in my DVD collection however I decided that with my HMV vouchers I?d splash out and buy the ?Definitive Edition?. The case is rather cleverly done, in the shading etc. The case is one of the ever increasing steelbook editions, basically a tin box. The definitive edition release like to use the tin?s natural colourings as well as painting over the top in places. The Predator release works better than any other, because if you look at the case head on, you see the predator image, which is half predator, and half you. Maybe it was this very reason that I lost clarity and purchased this edition of the DVD.
Definitive edition release try to get the best quality print possible of a movie and its special features on DVD form, for those I assume too tight-fisted to go out...

DVD Description
In the remote jungle of a Central American country, an elite group of commandos led by Major Dutch Schaeffer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), embarks on a CIA mission to clear out a guerrilla stronghold and rescue the remaining hostages. However, the hunters become the hunted when a highly intelligent, otherwordly being slowly and methodically starts killing off members of Dutch's team. Possessing a chameleonlike camouflaging ability and a deadly alien arsenal, the creature tracks down the soldiers one by one. Director John McTiernan's film is a thrilling high-action flick, filled with great one-liners (courtesy of Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura, and the rest of the cast) and excellent special effects.
