Poseidon is the 2006 remake of The Poseidon Adventure (1972). Directed by Wolfgang Peterson, it is a straight remake and well made action film.
The Plot
The luxury liner 'Poseidon' is swamped by a huge wave and overturns. The majority of the survivors stay in the main hall of the liner while a small group make a bid to get to the surface. However, the ship is a maze of passages, and the overturning of the ship is causing flooding, fires and other dangers for them.
The Cast and Performances
There is a good cast on show here. Josh Lucas plays Dylan Johns, one of the leads, as the man who persuades the group that going to the surface is the only safe course of action to take. His intensity in the role matches the mood created by the director perfectly. Kurt Russell is Robert Ramsey, New York Mayor, and the tussle of power between his character and Johns. There are similar good performances from Richard Dreyfuss and Jacinta Barrett. The remainder of the cast support well, and do a good job in creating a disaster atmosphere.
My Opinion
As disaster films go, this is quite good. As a remake, it didnt have much to do in terms of creating a plot, but it is a good one nonetheless. There is a very definite structure to the film, with the travelling survivors encountering problem after problem which they must overcome. The special effects are very good in giving the feel of an upside down ship and the dangers of water and fire all around.
The tension throughout the film is maintained, as is a necessary element for such a disaster film, and I was on the edge of my seat for the majority of it. I was impressed with this remake. There are parts when the film drags, and it is a little repetitive and predictable, but an enjoyable experience overall.
Conclusion
A good disaster movie, if a little repetitive and predictable.
