The Thing About Me and Scary Movies...
As some of you may know by now, I'm not big on the whole scary/fear factor type of film. The horror genre is just not my thing at all, and anything that is remotely nail-bitting is usually sidestepped for the Romcom or the period drama. I am, in point of fact, a woos when it comes to watching films of this type.
Let me give you an example. Upon seeing Independance Day at the cinema with my younger brother, at one part (the bit where the dog nearly gets engulfed in a fireball) I actually shouted IN THE CINEMA "the dog! the dog! OH! THE DOG!"
My brother has never been to the cinema with me since....!
So, it was with trepidation that I sat down last night, a large cushion next to me incase I needed it, to watch Poseidon. My lovely man bought it yesterday after having seen it at the cinema (I could not go for fear of making an arse of myself!) and assured me I would be fine with it. Yeah, well, that's what he thought!
Ninety minutes later, and with a number of nailshaped holes in his arm, I think he was probably regretting buying it at all, though he's far too stubborn to actually admit this out loud!
The film opens in a rather Titanic sort of way, beautiful ship, lovely romantic looking skyline, gorgeous music, and I thought to myself, hey, this is okay, this is quite nice. It didn't stay that way for long!
The story is thus: huge very exclusive, very expensive ocean liner is out at sea with everyone on board celebrating New Year. Lots of gorgeous dresses, balloons and a great singing performance from Fergie of Black-Eyyed-Peas fame. Everyone having a pretty good time until a rough wave (a really, really big one) swamps the ship and all hell breaks loose. The race to escape the capsozed ship is on, and the big question is who, if anyone, will actually get out alive (and in one piece) from what seems like an impossible senario to escape from.
I have to admit, that despite having the be-jesus scared out of me on more than one occassion, it was a really good film, well shot, well cast and very well played with some excellent special effects. I don't think it should be a certificate 12 however, as there were scene after scene of horrific and graphic death scenes, and it was quite gruelling at times. Very realistic, but gruelling.
I don't know if I would watch this film again, because, although it didn't give me nightmares (I'm amazed to say!) it really isn't my cup of tea, but it is definately worth a viewing if you didn't catch it at the cinema, as it will keep you guessing right till the end, and if you're anything like me it will have you so far off the edge of your seat that you're actually standing up, walking round, jumping up and down whilst simultaniously biting your nails!!
Who is in it?
The great cast includes Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas, Richard Dreyfuss, and Jacinda Barrett.
My Final Thoughts
It's a good film. It has the right balance of action and adventure, alond with a good dose of drama - and you are actually bothered about the characters which really does involve you in their desperate journey for survival. I liked it, despite being scared and horrified by some of the scenes, and although I wouldn't atch it again, I can highly recommend it as a excellent film well worth the £12.99 (WHSmiths) we spent on it.
Many thanks for reading, happy swimming.....Kate x
