Original and rather brilliant Jackie Chan outing which cemented his status as the biggest Hong Kong star ever.
If you are wondering why Jackie is regarded as a god by fans yet you've only seen Rush Hour, simply watch this. Find somewhere soft for your jaw as Jackie runs through a series of imaginative and outstanding stunts and wonderfully choreographed fight scenes that literally take the breath away.
Some of the highlights that you may have seen copied since Police Story was made in 1985: · car running over pram with no baby inside - [Speed (1994)] · hero points gun at bus, bus brakes and bad guys crash out of windows - [Tango and Cash (1989)] · hero throwing female co-star off high place - [Six Days Seven Nights (1998)] · hero riding motorbike with bad guy sitting backwards over front wheel then driven through a series of glass panels - [Rapid Fire (1992)].
DVD
The DVD is another of Hong Kong Legends quality presentations. The picture quality is brilliant for a Hong Kong movie and comes restored and anamorphically enhanced. There is one of Bey Logan's gleefully enthusiastic and informative commentaries and a little interview with Jackie. The best thing, however, is that this is an extended cut over what UK audiences had before with a couple of little scenes that weren't in the previously available or previously shown on TV version. It also features a Cantonese track with English DVD subtitles which is how all Jackie's movies should be watched (there is also a disagreeable English dubbing). The running length still remains a tight 96 minutes though meaning that this classic Chan does not outstay its' welcome. The cover and side graphic also match with Hong Kong legends own "Police Story II" disc which makes it look good on the shelf. I hope their forthcoming "New Police Story" disc will match too but, sadly, nobody distributes "Police Story III: Supercop" on DVD in the UK and "Police Story IV: First Strike" is not marketed as such in the UK (it is called "Jackie Chan's First Strike" and was distributed in edited form by New Line and Entertainment in Video).
