The year is now and the police force have changed their rules so anyone regardless of age, height, weight, sex and colour can sign up for police training so you can imagine the people who turn up at the police academy! Mahoney is a young man who is working in a car park when he gets annoyed and parks a car on 2 wheels and ends up getting arrested again. When he is waiting in the police station he meets Jones who is also there and can make excellent sound effects with his voice.
Mahoney is told by the police boss that he is going to either go to jail or sign up for the police training. Mahoney says he will do the training only if he can take a friend, he takes Jones with him; the catch with Mahoney signing up is that he is not allowed to quit, but he can be thrown out.
Mahoney and Jones set off for the police academy where Mahoney instantly tries to get himself thrown out. Here they meet a whole load of different people which they starts forming good friendships with. Will Mahoney get himself thrown out after all his attempts to do so or will he have a change of heart and quite enjoy himself?
This really is a good film which is easy viewing and suitable for all. I do like the character of Mahoney and thought Steve Guttenberg did a great job making him the person he did. There are a lot of extra characters in this film which include, Thompson, a female recruit played by Kim Catrall, Bank and Copeland who become the dogsbodies for Lft. Harris, Callerhad who is the female fitness instructor, Tackelberry who is mad on guns and weapons, Lessard who is the crazy and not all there Commandant and I really did enjoy each and every characters and they all bought something different to the film. The way the characters all work together and the chemistry between them all really is very good.
The storyline is quite good if not a little daft but the way it is played out with the humour involved makes for really fun and good viewing. As I mentioned before there is a lot of humour involved and not all of it is in you face, a lot is going on behind the main shot and if you look closely enough you will notice a lot which you may not have seen before. It was hubby who actually told me to look for this.
The setting for the film is present day according to the opening title sequence but the film was made back in 1984 so it does look quite dated now. The clothes which the recruits turn up to the academy in do really show the films age and some of them really are very funny indeed. The music for the film is good but not all too memorable but it was all appropriate for the places which it was used.
We have the 20th Anniversary special edition DVD which does have some bonus material which includes:-
Commentary by Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow, Leslie Easterbrook, G W Bailey, Director Hugh Wilson and Producer Paul Maslansky
All New reunion Documentary Behind Academy Doors - Secret Files Revealed
Trailer
I am not one for bonus features so have not watched these so I am unable to give comments on them.
The running time of this film is 92 minutes which I felt was a good length and the certificate is a 15 as it does contain moderate language and sex references. I really do feel that this is very high indeed and may even go as far as giving it a PG certificate. I have seen this film advertised for Saturday and Sunday evening on the television so I think the film rating may have been lowered since it was made in 1984.
We managed to get hold of this DVD for just £2 in the closing down sale at Woolworths which I feel was a bargain.
I do recommend this film as it has just the right amount of story and humour to make for an easy to watch film.
Advantages: Its funny, Its cheap Disadvantages: Its very old
I have always loved Police academy from such a young age, I was lucky enough to be given the full collection at Christmas time. ==Police Academy 20th Anniversary Edition== ===A Little Police Academy=== As this is the 20th Anniversary edition I am reviewing I better set it clear, this particular DVD was released in April 2004. Police academy first started back in 1984 with the release of the original film "Police Academy" But nobody thought they would ... ...there have been no more Police Academy's released. ==The DVD== Sit back relax and enjoy the movie, you will be laughing with enjoyment or with embarrassment. The film starts with looking a different people from different walks of life, you all remember the fat guy in the Kodak photo booth who is uplifted by the crooks and thrown in to the river, or Mahoney the car park attendant who just can't stay out of trouble with the law, or how about the guy ...

...of cadets that join the Police Academy, when the Mayor reduces the restrictions on who can sign up to be a police officer. This presents a lot of problems in itself as quite a few people who wouldn't have a chance ordinarily of becoming a police officer sign up for training.
Steve Guttenburg (of Cacoon fame) plays Carey Mahoney, who is at the academy only as an alterative to prison when he breaks the law. Starts out very much the wise guy and joker ... ...qualify to apply to a Police Academy let anone join one.
The story mainly takes place at the acedemy and is majorly centred around Mahoney - this biggest misfit of the bunch. You see his attempts at being thrown out of the academy and you eventually see him grow to become the Police Officer he is destined to be.
This film comes highly recommended - its a classic but is still fuinny today - worth a watch. ...

DVD Description
When the Police Academy adopts a completely open admissions policy, no height or weight restriction, and most worryingly no intelligence tests. Hence a large number of unemployable social misfits promptly enroll. The academy instructors have the most difficult wave of recruits to train up: they include Laverne Hooks the tiny voiced woman; Karen Thompson the sociopath (Kim Cattrall); Eugene Tackleberry the firearm fan and Larvell Jones the walking sound-effect. Carey Mahoney (Steve Guttenburg) is a reluctant cadet of a different kind--he must last the course at the Academy as an alternative to jail. This hilarious motley crew are the last, blundering buffoons you would want as upholders of the law, as your protectors. The crooks never had it so good.
