ROGER RABBIT by dropping cartoon characters into the same frame with flesh-and-blood actors. In THE POLAR EXPRESS, live action and animation have merged seamlessly, resulting in sparkling super-realism - a landmark technique Zemeckis and his Sony Pictures Imageworks team call Performance Capture. In the story, a disillusioned little boy--just old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus--has the adventure of a lifetime one fateful Christmas Eve. Clad in his pyjamas, he climbs aboard a magic train to the North Pole, driven by a kindly train conductor. Among myriad jaw-dropping moments, the train plummets brakeless through crystalline mountains in a simulated roller coaster ride. Going off the rails, skidding sideways, and snaking violently across a frozen lake, the train arrives at the North Pole (a vast, glowing city of brick buildings). At that moment, the car carrying the kids detaches and they're sent tumbling down never-ending chutes and slides until they land in the middle of Santa's Workshop. With its fascinating tale and impressive technical frolics, THE POLAR EXPRESS is destined to become both a holiday classic and a new turning point in the art of animated cinema.

Our unnamed hero is finding it hard to sleep on Christmas Eve, despite the fact he no longer believes in Santa Claus. Suddenly a train pulls up outside his house and the train conductor tells him to board, because they are on their way to the North Pole. Our hero does, and finds a train filled with other children, all of whom are given hot chocolate. The train, meanwhile, makes its sometimes precarious way to the North Pole, where the children and the conductor come across Santa Claus. There, they wait for him to decide who is going to receive 'The First Gift of Christmas'. Who will that be? And will our hero find his way home safely? . I've always been rather intrigued by this film, because what looked to me like an animated film was frequently talked about as if it had real actors (rather than just voice actors). And at first glance, it does indeed seem to be animated. Some research on wikipedia explained it all (sort of) - apparently the film is made using performance capture technology, which basically means that the action was filmed with real actors, and the result was then animated. It sounds complicated and probably is, but the final outcome is rather stunning. What we are left with is animation that looks so incredibly life-like, it is a little bit creepy to start with, but once I had got used to it, it really is a pleasure to watch. . There is no doubt that the look of the film is the best part. Everything is crystal clear and detailed, right down to the expressions on the children's faces. There is one scene on the train when it suddenly plunges down a steep hill, just like on a roller coaster, and I really felt as if I was on a roller coaster myself. And details like the crunching of snow underfoot and the condensation on the train windows are just incredible. Undoubtedly a real feast for the eyes. After this, watching plain old Disney, despite all the wonderful things they can do these days, is just a little bit boring. Then again, the film apparently cost $170 million to make, so it darned well ought to have been good. . Despite all this wonderment, I didn't really take to any of the main characters. The hero, and that is exactly how he is referred to in the credits, isn't all that heroic - he just goes along for the ride really - and there is no background to his character, so it is hard to feel all that much for him. That's no fault of the actor, Daryl Sabara, it's just the way that the story is written. I wasn't much more impressed by Nona Gaye, who plays the hero's friend, or Jimmy Bennett, who plays Billy. I just didn't find myself drawn to them at all, so in the end, I didn't really care what happened to them all that much. . Tom Hanks had a large part to play in the film. For starters, he was one of the producers. Then he had a number of roles in the film, all of them small ones, but crucial nevertheless - including the train conductor and Santa Claus. I thought he was good as the train conductor, but wasn't so keen on the other roles, all of which were a bit strange. Santa isn't very jolly - I thought he was overly austere, and the other roles, including a 'hobo' were very odd. Then there is the most annoying character of the film - a boy known as 'Know-it All', played by Eddie Deezen, who has a voice that constantly grates. . The story is really quite an odd one. Based on the novel by Chris Van Allsburg (which I haven't read), I found it all a bit creepy and not very Christmassy - although it is obviously supposed to be. Santa Claus and the elves gave me the willies and they are supposed to be part of the whole spirit of Christmas theme. Santa does give a few 'ho ho ho's, but that wasn't enough to save him. All in all, I just didn't 'get' the story and it really didn't do anything much for me. Perhaps I'm too traditional, preferring the virtually technology-free alternatives, but I thought the film was a feast for the eyes with very little other substance. However, I'm not the target audience, so hopefully children will enjoy it more than I did. . For those who like music with their films, there is plenty of that, including a beautiful song sang by our heroine and Billy on the train. Many of the songs were written and produced by Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri, and I'm sure that the soundtrack would make a lovely gift for anyone who likes Christmassy-type music. . There is just one extra with my DVD - the theatrical trailer. However, there is a two-disc version available for four times the price if you want to find out more about how the film was made. . This is a film that I'll probably watch if someone else wanted to, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again - it just didn't capture my imagination as I had expected it to. There is no doubt that director Robert Zemeckis has done a superb job of making the film a visual delight, but that just isn't quite enough for me. Still, I'm sure it will go down as a classic in a few more year's time, and hopefully the children in your life will like it a lot more than I did. Three stars out of five. . The DVD is available from play.com for £5.99. . Classification: U . Running time: 99 minutes

The Polar Express is a wonderful animated film, set on Christmas Eve, and follows the tale of one boy. Strangely enough, we never learn his realy name, but in the credits he is called "Hero Boy" so that is what I shall call him throughout the review. Hero Boy has begun to doubt the existence of Father Christmas, or Santa as he is called in the film. He tries to listen out for Santa on Christmas Eve but doesn't hear ... ...encyclopaedias to find out if the jolly man does exist but things aren't looking too good for Santa. Just as Hero Boy is falling asleep, an enormous locomotive thunders past his bedroom window, before he is invited to board the train by an old conductor, who tells him they are going to the North Pole and that the train is called The Polar Express. Hero Boy does so, and is greeted by many other children. The rest of the film follows the childrens ...

...and thoughts of journeys to the North Pole to check out the reality of Father Christmas are behind us for a while, although when I bought this film last week, I bought it on the strength of its' main character, Tom Hanks. I like the man. I like his dry humour, his romanticism, and the laughter he has given me in films like "The Money Pit", and judged my purchase upon his name. I was expecting something different from what I got, although here, I ... ...a well deserved break from the serious Tom Hanks we all know and love.
The story is a well known one, written by Chris Van Allsburg and what Warner Brothers have done is to bring the story up to date. It's about the journey from the childhood belief in Santa Clause to that moment of doubt where you lose the innocent belief without question in what adults tell you. That stepping stone between being a child, and being someone stuck between adolescence ...

Who is Robert Zemeckis?
*****************************
Zemeckis, one of Steven Spielberg's regular collaborators, is known as somewhat of a special effects king in the film industry. He now owns two production companies of his own and has showcased his special effects talent as far back as the 1980's in films such as Who framed Roger Rabbit and Back to the Future.

The Polar Express DVD
I was bought this film for Christmas from my mum as I was complaining that before Christmas I had nothing to watch that would get me into the Christmas spirit. Apart from sitting watching Alistair Sims version of scrooge with my dad which in my view is not giving as much Christmas spirit as it should. Anyhow it being February now nearly March I thought it time I watched it. Seeing as I'm on my sick bed from work and too skint ... ...it was all about.
The first thing I noticed when beginning to watch this film is that Tom Hanks appears to do most of the adult voices and appears as many a different character.
The film starts with a young boy at home on Christmas Eve and wondering really if Father Christmas will come and is begging to loose faith that there really is such a thing as Santa clause.
He is woken up from his light sleep by a sudden large noise, which stirs him to ...

Film only review
Hubby and I had seen a few clips of The PolarExpress since its release to cinemas in 2004 but had never actually got around to viewing the film. Christmas Day saw us sleepily relaxing, after pigging out a little in the afternoon, in front of the goggle box and so finally I managed to watch The PolarExpress.
Now despite my ever increasing years I still love many children's films and find that there are some which have the mass appeal which means adults and children alike will enjoy. I did enjoy The PolarExpress but feel it is definitely a children's film and only has limited appeal for adults. However it has been made exceptionally well.

Advantages: Great thrills and spills, Like a rollercoaster ride to me! Disadvantages: Characters dont have proper names.
Well, what can i say about this one. This one is quite good. One thing i don't know is, why aren't they given names? Well Billy is given a name but in the credits it doesnt say his name. Strange.
Tom Hanks has had a hard time making this as he was quite a few Characters:
The Conductor
The Ghost
Hero Boy
Santa
Hero Boy's Dad

Advantages: 2D version is fantastic Disadvantages: 3D version is terrible
As this movie has already been reviewed many times, I am specifically concentrating on the Blu-ray version, which shows the movie in either 2D or 3D.
Firstly, this is one of my favourite Christmas movies, and I couldn't wait for it to be released in 3D on Blu-ray.
The movie comes with a very attractive Lenticular sleeve, with a huge '3D' on the front, all looks very promising. there are two discs in the box, a Blu-ray disc that shows the movie in either 2D or 3D, plus an additional disc that has the standard DVD movie, also in 2D or 3D.
There are also 4 pairs of 3D glasses within the box.
As soon as dark fell, my wife & I settled down to be amazed by the 3D effects, as we had been with Journey to the Centre of the Earth in 3D.
Within 10 seconds, I wondered if I has the glasses on the wrong way around, but no, they were on correctly ...
On Christmas Eve, a disillusioned little boy just old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus, has the adventure of a lifetime aboard the Polar Express, a magical train bound for the North Pole and Santa's Workshop.
An instant Christmas classic in a league with the original Miracle on 34th Street (Good Morning America, )
This train ride is both majestic and edge-of-your-seat (The Hollywood Reporter, )
Every detail of the beloved children's classic is meticulously reconstructed in the film, with visuals that can only be described as wondrous (Washington Post, )
