hit records from bands that your kids will know well, even if you don't. You'll surely know this one: "Pokémon, You're my best friend, in a world we must defend. Gotta catch 'em all...." It's an international anthem. N'Sync's "Somewhere, Someday" and Emma Bunton aka Baby Spice's "Hey You, Free Up your Mind" take on a new meaning when set alongside the antics of Ash and co. capturing and training those cute and colourful cheeky chappies. As does "If Only Tears Could Bring You Back"--because (don't you know), a Pokémon's tears can bring a trainer back to life! Britney Spears' "Soda Pop", Billie's "Makin' My Way", B*#42;Witched's "Get Happy" and Vitamin C's "Vacation" ("Vacation, that's where I want be ... little more complex and dark than the popular TV series, but kids who live for the show will gobble up this film and ask for seconds. Those baffled by the show's popularity, however, will see nothing better here. Mewtwo, a new type of Pokémon designed by scientists to be the ultimate fighter, decides he wants to rule the world and challenges all the great Pokémasters to battle. Of course, our intrepid heroes Ash, Misty and Brock are there to tangle with Mewtwo and spoil his devilish schemes. The film is a tad more emotional than the show (that is, there is some emotion), with Ash sacrificing himself to defend his beloved Pikachu (but don't you worry, Ash will be just fine).Would you really expect the makers of this worldwide phenomenon to radically change its winning formula? The feature is only 55 minutes long, but there's also a 20-minute short, "Pikachu's Vacation". For the Pokémon novice, this escapade will truly baffle: the narrated tale has virtually no dialogue except Pokémon speaking their names (Bulbasaur, for instance, will only express emotion by using variations of his name: "Bulba, Bulba-SAUR!"). It's a real curio. --Doug Thomas

After the incredible success of the Pokemon animated series, leading to a global influx in the sale of Pokemon merchandise, it was only a matter of time until a movie was released. Simply named “Pokemon: The First Movie” the popularity of the franchise made for an expected huge box office hit all over the world.
Before the actual film started you are treated to a mini-film, “Pikachu’s Vacation” is where Pikachu and the rest of the gangs Pokemon get treated to a rest at a holiday camp. Here they get into a disagreement with a rival gang within the camp and partake in a series of different challenges to see who is the better team, but along the way they are forced to pull together and work as one collective team, therefore becoming friends along the way.
The actual film begins with a brief back-story of how a the DNA found of a very rare, unique Pokemon was used to clone and improve a whole new Pokemon all together. Unfortunately this is where there is some confusion as to there overall story of the movie, as in the English versions where is a huge chunk of the plot is cut-out, this absent part being an important part as well as strengthening the story, defining some of the key motives behind the characters aggressions and actions which where removed due to the adult-themed nature. It was a shame to see that this part was removed but seeing as how it is a movie heavily themed to the child demographic, there is a feeling that the characters motives might have been lost in the story any how.
It is quite easy to base an opinion on this movie on the memory of seeing it as a child and in the boom days of the Pokemon brand, but to review it rather more objectively a decade after it was released hopefully lets a more impartial view on the movie as a whole. The illustrative works within the movie are beautiful and colourful as always and the familiar voices of the characters relate this to the series while giving it a fresh new atmosphere for the big screen.
The story throughout is familiar to one you may see in the series it is relatively easy to follow and fairly exciting, but looking back over the entirety of the movie it is clear that the final battle scene takes up virtually most of the film, is very drawn-out and lasts far too long.
The actual DVD comes free with a promo Pokemon card, as they did when it was first released in the cinemas. Along with this there are come extra features in the DVD menus such as the origin of the original Japanese series and the history of video games leading up to the Pokemon handheld video games.
It is quite easy to get lost in the nostalgic memories which surrounded the Pokemon franchise years ago, but looking back on the first movie it has to be said that although it is a link to some peoples childhood past time interests, the movie doesn’t really hold the same prestige, but is still one that can be enjoyed for old times sake and of course, by kids.
Advantages: Good DVD Disadvantages: Not sure about the film
...I don’t understand the whole Pokemon thing but I do know a good DVD when see one.
My kids have gone for the region 1 'Standard Screen' version and despite the horrible 'Snapper-case' it is a very fine package.
With the exception of Stuart Little, children’s DVDs have in the past been neglected in terms of the final transfer to disc and the lack of special features included.
The Pokemon DVD has the same relatively basic animation associated with ... ...value of the disc. Indeed, the kids spent the first day going through the extras (with the exception of the commentary) and watched the film on a second sitting.
Kids seem to understand Pokemon and this DVD is one of the better Pokemon gifts you could give them.

Advantages: Children love characters, animation better than TV show Disadvantages: Very boring plot, irritating animation still
Pokémon the First Movie had a lot of hype when it came out. Mainly because it is based around one of the most popular, if not THE most popular Childrens TV Show and Game Series available at the moment.
However, this movie has to be one of the most boring and pointless movies ever made. It has no interesting storyline and is totally unrelated to the games, which i think have amazing gameplay.
But I am speaking from the view of a young adult. Many ... ...the characters and love all of the characteristics and idiosyncracies that the 150 (currently, there will be more) Pokémon have.
So for kids, it's an excellent movie. It keeps them engaged and they love it. And the DVD is not too bad, a few extra features but nothing too amazing. But for adults, think again. Please. This movie is something that I would recommend to anyone with an age of 12 or under, but certainly no more than that, even if they ...

...defeat the psychic (and misunderstood) Pokemon Mewtwo (a clone of the ancient Pokemon Mew).
If you managed to follow that synopsis, you will love the film. If not, still give it a go, it is entertaining, and malevolently dark in some places.
The story is one of hope and the belief that differences should be left aside, a powerful story captured for a young audience.
The animation is slightly better than the TV series, though you do get the feeling ... ...also how Ash became a Pokemon Master Wannabe. It has DVD ROM features, including virtual trading cards, essays on the Pokemon genre and other stuff.
All in all, its a damned good disc, presented in well and the ideal thing to keep your kids entertained. The picture looks good, the audio is exceptional.
Oh, and the rendition of the Pokemon theme is one of the best I have ever heard. The guy who sings it just sounds so energetic. ...

DVD Description
In this action-packed adventure story based on the popular TV series, a villainous Pokemon "collector" is attempting to ensnare the mysterious guardian Pokemon Lugia. In order to summon this mystical creature, he must first capture three powerful elemental Pokemon representing fire, lightning, and ice: Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno--an act that threatens to upset the balance of nature itself. As horrible natural disasters begin to occur all over the world, young Ash discovers that according to an ancient prophecy, he is the chosen one who must save the earth from total destruction--a daunting challenge for any Pokemon trainer. Fortunately, Ash is surrounded by friends he can always count on for support: his faithful electric Pokemon Pikachu, traveling companions Misty and Tracy, and his new friend Melody. Even some old enemies, the nefarious Team Rocket, end up lending a helping hand for a change. This film has a more polished feel than its predecessor, POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE, and some impressive computer-animated background graphics. The main feature is preceded by a new animated short, "Pikachu's Rescue Adventure," in which audiences get to see a variety of wild Pokemon in their natural settings while learning a valuable lesson about cooperation.
