DVD Description
Includes the war films PLATOON, TIGERLAND, and HAMBURGER HILL. In PLATOON, Chris is sent to fight in Vietnam. He begins to see that his platoon is divided into two groups. One consists of lifers, juicers, and subintelligent whites, the other of blacks and heads. Sgt. Barnes, a combat-loving burnout, is the informal leader of the lifers, and Sgt. Elias, a free spirit, leads the latter group. When the platoon takes some gruesome losses while on an operation, an enraged Barnes kills some Vietnamese who may or may not have been VC and orders the burning of their village, outraging the temporarily absent Elias. As the conflict between these two reaches its tragic denouncement, Chris must decide what he really values. TIGERLAND is set in 1971, when America was a nation divided over the escalating violence and bloodshed of the Vietnam War. In Fort Polk, Louisiana, a group of young soldiers-in-training has conflicting opinions about the war. Jim Paxton is an idealistic romantic who sees Vietnam as potential inspiration for future novels and romantic war stories. Roland Bozz is a rebellious antihero who decides that he wants no part of the army or the war and begins to disobey orders, trying to get expelled from the infantry. Paxton and Bozz become leaders to a small group of young draftees, and Bozz inspires them to question authority. As they enter Tigerland--a training process in which the soldiers simulate combat in the Louisiana wilderness--the men begin to realise just how far they will go to stay out of the war. In HAMBURGER HILL, troops of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division engaged the enemy at the base of Hill 937 in the Ashau Valley. Ten days and eleven bloody assaults later, the troops who fought there called it Hamburger Hill.
Advantages: script, direction, scenery and camera-work Disadvantages: none
...Obviously, this is about the masterpiece that was Platoon, a film by Oliver Stone. This has to be one of the greatest Vietnam War films ever, winning several oscars. Some may say that HamburgerHill, which is in itself a fantastic film, was the more deserving of the two, but I fell that Platoon, has a certain direction and feeling, that can just pull anyone in.
The film, among many stars, has the, what is a small time talent, of Charlie Sheen, known for films such as Navy Seals. Charlie plays the main, or what is seen to be main, role of the film, with intense narration from him, to add to the power and impact of the scenes. There is a certain quality that is brought to the film, because of the way that this has been integrated, and makes you feel emotional.
So the story basically revolves around a platoon, hence the name...

Advantages: For vietnam addicts everywhere Disadvantages: Hard to find any...sorry
...Platoon is a very well known, now iconic movie made by Oliver Stone. The movie I think set the standards for Vietnam movies of the 80's, probably influenced by Apocalypse Now but certainly a league above the rest - HamburgerHill et al (and probably eclipses Apocalypse Now a little).
Contents first:-
1. 2 Discs - The movie and features
2. Several still photographs of cast and crew behinds the scenes - if you ever played the Platoon computer game on the Commodore 64 you will have seen some of these before.
3. An accompanying booklet with a little history of the film and the crew and cast and a more personal view by Oliver Stone.
4. Nice Silver Box with more photos inserts in the case.
The film is the film, no added scenes or director cut sections are added - there are reasons for this as explained below. If you have the old Platoon DVD...

Advantages: Realistic depiction of war, plenty of action Disadvantages: A bit slow in places, very graphic violence
...HamburgerHill is the supposedly poor cousin of the two highly acclaimed Vietnam War films, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. While the latter two films were released to critical acclaim, HamburgerHill received a somewhat mixed reaction from the press. HamburgerHill is directed by John Irvin and was released in 1987 and unlike the other two films is based around an actual battle that occurred during the war.
The film follows the fortunes of the 101st Airborne Division as they fight to gain control of Hill 937 (it’s height in metres) which after the battle was renamed ‘HamburgerHill’ for obvious reasons. The battle lasted for ten days and during that time the Americans were forced to use three battalions of soldiers to remove the Vietnamese presence from the hill. The defending forces, The 28th North Vietnamese Regiment were...
