score a new version of Planet of the Apes. Firstly he comes from a background of explorations in percussion. Hints of that self-education made the best of such works as Mission: Impossible and Men In Black. Now comes the most thunderous, bone-rattling collection of stick bashing in his (and possibly anybody's) cinematic career. There may be a large orchestra with an oversized brass section at work here, but it's the endless barrage of live or sampled percussive tracks you'll find yourself strumming fingers to. Depicting the primitive jungle with lots of drumming is a filmic tradition, but in Elfman's hands this is no earthly jungle. The sheer volume of layered noise in "The Hunt" is overwhelmingly exhilarating. Electronic overlays propel this material into the future. This suits not only the film's timeframe but also the commercial need that results in Paul Oakenfold's "Rule the Planet Remix" which is tacked on last. After Elfman's "Main Title Deconstruction" though, there's no doubt who's the rhythmic A-list Kong of the jungle. --Paul Tonks

Planet Of The Apes movies, the 1974 TV series has become a true cult classic. Now all the 14 episodes (including The Liberator, which never aired during the show's original run) have been compiled and are available to own for the first time. After their spacecraft travels through a time warp, two astronauts (Ron Harper, James Naughton) from 1981 crash-land back on Earth in the year 3085 - a time when intelligent apes rule and humans have been reduced to servants or pets. Captured by the apes and sentenced to death, they are saved by a curious chimpanzee named Galen (Roddy McDowall). But now all three are on the run, trying to keep one step ahead of the gorilla army led by General Urko (Mark Lenard), who is determined to kill the renegades. Advantages: Tim Burton's vision, great designs, special effects Disadvantages: Not as exciting as it could be, although never dull
movie, although also inspired by and based upon rather than a straight adaptation, captures the tone of the book perfectly. The book has a different ending but the shock twist is essentially the same. The book is more talky and intellectual and the first film reflects that without ever becoming boring.
There is an interesting element of faith v science in the Burton version. The apes believe that their creator ape will return one day to bring peace to the planet but educated people believe that to be a fairytale to help understand their origin. When the truth is discovered this shakes the foundations of their society. As Ari says at the conclusion of the film, one day people/apes on her planet will believe that the story of Davidson’s coming from the stars will be thought of as a fairytale - but she will know it to be true. Advantages: Great Boxset, well illustrated Disadvantages: Nothing
As a child growing up I remember watching a film with Charlton Heston battling through a corn field being chased by Gorillas. Since then the film 'Planet of the Apes' has always had a special place in my film collection, as it was one of my late fathers favourite films.
This special edition has lots of extras (which I will cover later). The boxset has been well designed and has each of the five films (1 film per disc) and a sixth disc containing the special features. Together with a program guide inside. The presentation box is very nice, folding outwards from the centre with a different picture on each disc, which is a scene from that film. Unlike the 5 films that I had on VHS the space that it takes up has also been reduced, which has pleased me and my wife.......
The 1968 film was based on the novel by Pierre Boulle and was ...
Advantages: Sound and extras are stunning Disadvantages: Not as good as original
the film shallower than it needs to be and it never really gets close to topping the original in any non-cosmetic way.
The Video
Perfection. This is one stunning transfer. Edge enhancement doesn't exist here. Sharpness and clarity is perfect. This is one of the most vivid images I've seen on DVD this year. The bright scenes early in the space station look fine, and when the film gets darker as it moves to the apeplanet the image does not falter. File this one with your "demo" DVDs.
The Audio
Again, be prepared to be blown away. Both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS soundtracks on this disc are the best I have heard since the DD 5.1 EX mix on The Phantom Menace. From the crash scene in the early part of the film to the huge battle at the end, the mix is filled with great separation and bass. This is one of those "WOW" discs to show off ...
