This BBC series has set an example for other nature documentaries to follow. Whith its unprecedented amount of funding and use of new technology, this series really captures the wonders of our great planet, whilst highlighting the need to preserve it for future generations.
The dvd consists of 11 roughly hour long episodes, each covering a different topic, such as deserts, caves and fresh water. There are some great sequences, my favourites being snow leapord chase down a near vertical mountain face, and the struggle of a polar bear desperatly trying to find food as it starves to death.
The last 10 minutes of each episode shows how the footage was filmed, giving a rare insight into the life of a nature camaraman. These short 'how its made' documentaries show just how much sacrifice needs to be made to become a camaraman, but also make you wish you had been the one filming that special sequence.
Each episode features the great landscapes of earth, and the animal life thriving within them. Nothing is ever shown for long peroids of time, and so each episode covers a large array of different anamals, from great white sharks hunting seals, to wild dog chases across the plains of Africa. The series does evoke emotion, and does show animals being hunted and eaten by predators, however i feel that this adds realism to the whole series, and shows just how harsh mother nature can be.
The series is narrated by David Attenborough, well known for his great narration of many documentaries. He is brilliant, encapsulating the whole spirit of this great series.
Overall, this is a dvd set definately worth buying, as I assure you that you will want to watch each episode over and over again.
