BBC has ever produced, it's now taken on another role: as a superb demonstration disc for the potential of HD DVD and Blu-ray. Spread over a good ten hours, the series charts life and nature in dozens upon dozens of differing locations around the earth. Diligently and warmly narrated by Sir David Attenborough, Planet Earth calmly goes close in on its subject matter when required, and then pulls out some stunning perspective shots that are simply breathtaking. It's hard to come up with the right superlatives to do the photography on the programme any kind of justice, and that it's married to such fascinating subject matter is all the better. And if you think the original broadcast of Planet Earth was something special, or you were gobsmacked by the picture quality on DVD, just wait until you see it in 1080p HD glory. Particularly some of the broader shots here are all but without parallel, and it's a real reward for those who have invested ahead of the crowd in high definition technology. Presented over five discs, and matching wonderful content to spot-on visual presentation, Planet Earth is now not just a landmark in nature documentary film making. It's also a chartermark of quality for just what HD DVD and Blu-ray can offer. A stunning release, in more than one sense. --Jon Foster

Advantages: excellent footage/bonus material/educational Disadvantages: can't think of any
...comprises of all of the Planet Earth episodes shown on BBC1 as well as a bonus -Planet Earth - the future. This bonus dvd accompanies the book of the same name and looks at saving species and asks the question do we face an extinction crisis. We also learn about how we can save certain species.
xx--Bonus content--xx
This bonus disk also looks at pollutiion, climate change and the growing human population -- all of which are putting pressure on ... ...living together-the challenges facing the planet and living together in such remote areas in the 21st century.
This bonus disk asks and attempts to answer a lot of question about our planet in crisis and is a very interesting and inspiring watch. I really enjoyed learning about ways in which I could help, and after watching the stunning footage filmed of our planet, you can not help but ask the question "how can I help" -this disk really tries to ...

Advantages: Beauty, nature, David Attenborough Disadvantages: None
...like David Attenborough, and the Planet Earth series raises the standard another notch over the competition and if like me you love natural history you'll find nothing better...................Planet Eart is streets ahead of anyone else. The dvd collection is comprised of 11 episodes, each looking at different environments, and then three more traditional documentaries about the threats to these environments.
As ever, it's the camera work (and David ... ...marvel at how beautiful our planet and the creatures on it really are. The series also includes a number of truly fantastic moments such as a snow leopard chasing a goat down a sheer rock face, a pride of lions hunting elephants and a polar bear fighting a walrus. You will not find a more beautifully shot, painstakingly researched, lovingly made and worthy piece of wildlife television than Planet Earth.
My own favourite part was definately the piece ...

Advantages: Great scenes that you can't imagine exists Disadvantages: Could be a little longer
This is the best dvd set I've ever bought and I got the blu ray edition. Each dvd is on a topic about some landscape/water part of the earth and they use the best examples to show (ex: biggest cave, largest reef, etc.) You feel like each topic can actually be a 2 hour movie by itself, but they do a great job of picking the best images into each dvd. The only exception is the first dvd, which is a preview of all the other topics. It gathers the best ...

Advantages: A wonderful insight into our great planet Disadvantages: Just too brilliant
This BBC series has set an example for other nature documentaries to follow. Whith its unprecedented amount of funding and use of new technology, this series really captures the wonders of our great planet, whilst highlighting the need to preserve it for future generations. The dvd consists of 11 roughly hour long episodes, each covering a different topic, such as deserts, caves and fresh water. There are some great sequences, my favourites being ... ...and the struggle of a polar bear desperatly trying to find food as it starves to death.
The last 10 minutes of each episode shows how the footage was filmed, giving a rare insight into the life of a nature camaraman. These short 'how its made' documentaries show just how much sacrifice needs to be made to become a camaraman, but also make you wish you had been the one filming that special sequence.
Each episode features the great landscapes of ...
