xx-- My intro---xx
An epic collection of five discs.
The collection comprises of all of the Planet Earth episodes shown on BBC1 as well as a bonus -Planet Earth - the future. This bonus dvd accompanies the book of the same name and looks at saving species and asks the question do we face an extinction crisis. We also learn about how we can save certain species.
xx--Bonus content--xx
This bonus disk also looks at pollutiion, climate change and the growing human population -- all of which are putting pressure on to the natural wilderness. It delves into issues such as why previously uninhabited areas are paramount for our survival, as well as the survival of some of the worlds best known animal life. We also look at living together-the challenges facing the planet and living together in such remote areas in the 21st century. This bonus disk asks and attempts to answer a lot of question about our planet in crisis and is a very interesting and inspiring watch. I really enjoyed learning about ways in which I could help, and after watching the stunning footage filmed of our planet, you can not help but ask the question "how can I help" -this disk really tries to open our eyes and to see how little things can alter the way in which we live in harmony with nature and also the bigger approaches we can take to help stop extinction and planet pollution. As well as helping us and giving us some much needed answers, we learn about the expectations which scientists studying in these fields have for our planet and what the future really does hold for planet earth. An invaluable disk which will make the set well worth buying , even if it is for this extra footage which was not shown on the television series.
xx--About the set in general--xx
The box set of these five disks comes in a sleeve decorated with a "metallic' and natural look planet earth - a stunning image. The title is "Planet earth -as you've never seen it before", which is a great title and describes the awe that you will be in when you see some of the best wildlife footage ever captured for you to watch again and again. This series is from the makers of the "blue planet" which contains equally stunning footage of ocean life. This set cost me approx £35.00, and can be bought cheaper now, however it is also available now on blue ray -- the price is fairly high as you would probably expect for five blue ray disks -- but I really do intend to purchase it, as it is too good an opportunity to miss , in my opinion, with footage of this quality.
xx---disk one--xx
--x--Intro--x--
Contains an overview of the series and what the series sets out to achieve through the intensive filming in many different locations and parts of the world. This introduction is called Pole to Pole. We see our planet as a whole and we look at features that have helped to shape our planet in the past and things which are happening at the moment as well as looking at predictions for the future. Very informative insight into the shaping of our planet, helps to explain how we came to be where we are - will increase your knowledge of our precious planet and will also increase awareness as to how delicate our planet really is.
--x--Mountains--x--
The next chapter of disk one looks at mountains, and tours some of our largest mountain ranges. Whilst looking in awe at the spectacular shapes which make up the majestic mountains that make up a lot of our planet, it is also fascinating to get an insight into the creatures that actually make these mountain ranges their homes, how they live there and how they manage to survive living in sometimes very difficult conditions. Very interesting footage highlighting creatures and habitats that some of us would other wise probably be oblivious to, or at least not see in quite so much detail. Fascinating filming and a great educational experience for all the family to enjoy --whether it's visiting the homes of the lesser known creatures who live here or just enjoying the beautiful scenery and stunning shots which make up this chapter in the first DVD -there is certainly something which everybody will enjoy.
--x--Fresh Water--x--
The last chapter in this first disk looks at the different types of wildlife found living in the fresh waters of the mountains, and other creatures which make their homes in the various rivers, wetlands and lakes of the planet. A fascinating journey around the different waters of the world, from canyons to waterfalls, some brilliant filming explores the majestic creatures who "hide" in the waters -- for the first time, we are learning about amazing aminals who are able to live on land as well as water and also just the water dwellers. Again, there is something for everybody to learn here, from all the corners of the world, this chapter will open your eyes to the swimming wonders of the world!
xx---disk two---xx
--x--Caves--x--
The first chapter of the second disk delves into the various caves around the world and discovers some of the rarely seen wildlife that make these caves their homes. We learn about different species of bats and fish as well as looking at lesser known creatures, such as the salamander. We are invited into caves from all over the world, and the journeys can take us to some of the most remote homes. Seeing how these caves have formed over millions of years, and looking at their expanse and natural beauty is not only educational, but will leave you with some stunning visions of the world which you would have probably never had the opportunity to see before -places that are so remote-very few people have actually visited them. You will be very pleased to have the opportunity to delve into these hide-always.
--x--Deserts--x--
The second chapter on this disk looks at 30 per cent of planet earth - deserts. We may think that they are dry and inhabitable, but it is here that like in all of the discoveries we come across in this series, that we will look at creatures that make the desert their homes, and be fascinated by how the do this. We will see new and unfamiliar species and learn how they adapt toi desert life. This is the first time that the desert areas have been filmed in such detail, and the filming does not disappoint at all. Stunning scenes, the sun beating down on such a dry area will make you wonder how any creature could possibly inhabit these deserts. Another of planet earth's well kept secrets...until now....
--x--Ice Worlds--x--
the third chapter on this disk looks at how creatures make their homes in Antarctica and the Arctic -so we come from the hot deserts to the somewhat cooler ice worlds!! Here we come across creatures we are all familiar with and enjoy watching -- however, we now realise how much of a struggle it is for creatures to survive in an ice world which is slowly melting away. What is the future for these creatures? How have they adapted their survival techniques? How will they have to further adapt? --These are just some of the questions that this section attempts to answer. We see what happens as the sea freezes -- sometimes it can result in sad consequences, other times creatures have adapted to living above and below the ice. This chapter really has a strong emphasis on global warming and it's effects --something that will make you question your lifestyle and the future of the planet.
xx---disk three-xx
--x--The Great Plains--x--
The first chapter on disk three looks at the great plains of the planet - hot and cold- from the African savannah to the Arctic tundra. These plains are where we find some of the best wildlife on earth, especially as they come together in one place. We watch as they run from predators and also migrate. The wilderbeast migration over the maasai mara is quite possibly one of the most spectacular wildlife sites that man can witness. A fantastic opportunity to enjoy the wonders of wildlife and watch their daily fight for life, in the great circle of life. With amazing backdrops, and the wonders nature --you won't want to leave your TV!! I think this is my favourite chapter!!
--x--Jungles--x--
The second chapter of this disk is all about jungles. We see the magnificent survival skills of creatures in the jungle. This chaper uses state of the art tracking tracking shots as it moves along the dark and vast jungle floors -one not to be missed -it is amazing to see so many different species of wildlife living in such a difficult place to survive in -- Truly the survival of the canniest of creatures.
--x--Shallow Seas--x--
The third chapter takes us to the shallow seas of planet earth. We see coral sea life and follow a whale mother and calf. the splender of the oceans is magnificent to see and we will learn that there is much more lurking beneath the ocean than we could ever possibly imagine -- this looks at fish and mammals alike, again using state of the art filming which means we can watch these creatures where they are most happy -- under the shallow seas!
xx---disk four--xx
Unlike the other disks, there are only two chapter on this disk.
--x--Seasonal forests--x--
The first chapter takes us to the forests of planet earth, watching how they have strived to develop of millions of years and what their threats are now. We learn about the different organisms which make the forests their homes as well as the creatures that live in the forest areas.
---x--Ocean Deep--x---
The second chapter looks at deeper ocean life and what lives on the sea bed, the makers had already had a lot of experience with this topic -being responsable for the "blue panet" series, but this does not cease to amaze. You will be taken down on a journey to the bottom of the ocean, where it is cold and dark, and where species that you disdn't know existed lived. A truly remarkable and memorable chapter. This finishes the programmes in style!
xx--overall opinion--xx
A fantastic collection of footage, taken over a long period of time, to see the world as you have never seen it before. The scenes, sounds and creatures of these programmes make each chapter remarkable and you will want to visit the far flung corners of planet earth again and again -with this dvd you can. Perfect for all - a great family watch or to watch alone --absolutley stunning, with haunting music and narration by David Attenborough to complete hours of intense filming.

...like David Attenborough, and the Planet Earth series raises the standard another notch over the competition and if like me you love natural history you'll find nothing better...................Planet Eart is streets ahead of anyone else. The dvd collection is comprised of 11 episodes, each looking at different environments, and then three more traditional documentaries about the threats to these environments.
As ever, it's the camera work (and David ... ...marvel at how beautiful our planet and the creatures on it really are. The series also includes a number of truly fantastic moments such as a snow leopard chasing a goat down a sheer rock face, a pride of lions hunting elephants and a polar bear fighting a walrus. You will not find a more beautifully shot, painstakingly researched, lovingly made and worthy piece of wildlife television than Planet Earth.
My own favourite part was definately the piece ...

This is the best dvd set I've ever bought and I got the blu ray edition. Each dvd is on a topic about some landscape/water part of the earth and they use the best examples to show (ex: biggest cave, largest reef, etc.) You feel like each topic can actually be a 2 hour movie by itself, but they do a great job of picking the best images into each dvd. The only exception is the first dvd, which is a preview of all the other topics. It gathers the best ...

...My husband saw a couple of these programs a while ago and did nothing but rave about them. So when I saw the box set in Virgin for £10.99 I had to buy it to see what all the hype was about. I have to admit since starting to watch it, conversation has come to a grinding halt in our house due to the fact that I am glued to it. The set comes with 4 discs, each containing 3 x 45 minute long programs narrated by David Attenborough on different subjects about our planet, ranging from Ice worlds to Plains, to Deserts to Jungles, etc. At the end of each program is a 10 minute "Diary" showing how they made the program and what the camera crew had to endure to get the filming. This is very funny to watch and almost worth buying the dvd for on its own. Its amazing to think that the 45 minutes of footage you have just seen can take up to...
