All Neal Page (Steve Martin) wants to do is make it home from a business trip in New York City and spend Thanksgiving with his family in Chicago. Instead, he finds himself rerouted...
more...from New York's La Guardia Airport to Wichita, Kansas. With no other options, Neal decides to share a room in a fleabag hotel with Del Griffith (John Candy), a shower-curtain-ring salesman and fellow stranded traveler. Although Neal finds Del to be a buffoon, he just can't seem to get away from him. To make matters worse, all their efforts to get back to Chicago fail as trains break down and rental cars catch on fire. Along the way they encounter crazy cabbies, redneck truck drivers, and oversexed bus passengers. John Hughes's (SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB) first film to feature adults after his success with teen films features fine performances from Martin and Candy. Kevin Bacon, who appeared in Hughes's next film, SHE'S HAVING A BABY, makes a small but humorous appearance, as does Edie McClurg, known for her role as the high school secretary in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF.

~* Introduction *~

Director John Hughes made quite a few comedy films in the 80’s, Hughes’s best films all starred the late comedy genius John Candy. Along with Uncle Buck I’d say Planes, Trains and Automobiles are John Hughes best films, and John Candy’s best films too.

~* Story *~

Anyway onto the story; Neal Page (Steve Martin) a highflying “big cheese” at a large company US company is desperate to get home to Chicago for thanksgiving. Amongst the hustle and bustle of New York City Neal struggles to make it to the airport in time for his flight. After a lot of stress and running around Neal makes it on time to the airport and boards his flight. On the plane Neal meets shower curtain ring salesman Del (superbly played by John Candy). Del is warm, friendly and loud, Del is keen to introduce himself and have a chat…Neal on the other hand is not a “conversationist.”

For various reasons Neal and Del end up spending a little more time with each other than they originally anticipated and Del and Neal learn to like each other with plenty of laughs along the way.

~* Acting and Characters *~

John Candy’s character; Del is very like the character that Candy played in another of John Hughes films – Uncle Buck. (Candy played Uncle Buck) Both Uncle Buck and Del are really warm and friendly people who are really likeable despite their “slob” personalities. John Candy is a superb actor on his own but together with Steve Martin both actors excel and provide some absolutely hilarious moments. The funniest scene of Planes, Trains and Automobiles has to be when Del and Neal are pulled over by the police in their burnt out car whilst singing Blue Moon of Kentucky.

~* Overall *~

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a very, very funny film but the plot is also superb and despite the film being a tad predictable most people will really enjoy it. It’s a bit of a shame though that the DVD version has no added features.
