BAND HISTORY:
Placebo are a British alternative rock band who formed in the mid to early 90's. Some of the bands' musical influences are Depeche Mode, The Smiths and Sonic Youth. They have also made live performances with the lead singer of the Pixies, David Bowie and the lead singer of the Cure. The band are highly renound for their androgynous front man, and for being 'half gay', even though the band has 3 members. The lead singer and guitarist is bisexual. The bassist is gay, and the drummer is straight.
A rock band is expected to live up to the sex, drugs and rock 'n roll lifestyle, and Placebo do not disappoint. Although they may have calmed down lately, the videos on this dvd clearly show the bands' shift in image. From antsy glam rock in their debut single '36 Degrees', to alternative rock pioneers in recent release 'Twenty Years'. The interview also featured on this dvd gives an insight into the experience.
Placebo have released 6 albums entitled
'Placebo', 'Without You I'm Nothing', 'Black Market Music', Sleeping With Ghosts', 'Meds' and an album version of this dvd called 'Once More With Feeling: Singles 1996-2004', featuring the same tracks. They released their first dvd 'Soulmates Never Die, Live in Paris 2003' which features a live performance at Bercy in paris before 16,000 fans, taken from their 2003 tour.
Placebo have also made a cameo appearance in British glam rock film 'Velvet Goldmine' in which they play a band called 'The Flaming Creatures', covering T.Rex's '20th Century Boy'.

OVERALL OPINION:
I think that to have a dvd which shows material spanning from the very first, to the latest release is a great idea! In approximately 2 hours and 9 minutes I am able to experience the very best bits of my favourite band, from start to finish. Also, I feel it is very easy to move around the dvd menu's, and it is visually beautiful.
I was pleased to find this dvd was different to the one released by the band a few months previously. Although the interview documentary is not quite as visually exciting as the one in the previous dvd, it is MUCH more in depth and detail.
Watching the videos of each single released by the band was awesome. I think that long-term fans will especially appreciate this feature as it is quite nostalgic. However, if you are a new fan I am sure you will love seeing old material that you have not been able to find. With the optional feature of the bands' commentary of the making of each video, the buyer will feel they have a close insight into the meaning and production of each video. Not forgetting that it's highly amusing.
There are extra features such as live performances which I enjoyed as I am an avid fan, and to have new material added on was great.
Placebo have been around for a long time and they have quite a lot of material. I think that by releasing a collection of their finest works at this time was a great way to keep old and new fans up to date, and the way in which it has been presented makes this dvd an essential for all serious fans.
AVAILABILITY:
I bought the dvd for around £17.99 shortly after it was released. It seems to be selling for between 8.99 and 17.99 on CD and DVD selling websites. I bought the dvd in a branch of MVC, and I have seen it being sold in most large popular music stores. It seems that most large music stores will have it stocked. I would however recommend that you look on ebay.
