I was actually the first person in my family to see this (Trust me that's something to make a point about) and most of them didn't think it would be any good even though i said it was a very Enthralling film. It was not until Chronicles of Riddick was coming out that they started to think about watch Pitch Black (this film is the First out of the Two). That's why I bought this DVD. I thought about buying the Standard edition but this one also had special features that contained information on Chronicles of Riddick. (Plus it was only a few quid more!!)
Pitch Black follows the story of a spaceship and its passengers that crash land on an alien planet, seemingly devoid of life. The spaceship captain is killed in the crash and the crew and its passengers must find a way to get off of the deserted Planet. The Quickly come across settlements, deserted for many years. But why and from what? On board
were religious travellers to New Mecca (holy land), a mischievous "boy", and a ruthless and enigmatic murderer who breaks free from his captor. Constant Daylight rules over the planet, until a time when the world is plunged into many years of darkness. Who would you fear more, the ruthless murderer, or the Pitch Black of the Night?
The storyline follows the same sort of lines as most thriller/ horror Sci-Fi films, evil creatures trying to kill you as with Alien and the Alien Franchise, however provides the viewer with a distinct feel that they haven't seen something like this before. However, with a cast of relative unknowns at the time apart from Vin Diesel, I found this film was at times a bit predictable. Bad guy turned good was always going to be the main brunt of the story. Although this may have been true it seems this has been turned into a cult classic. One of those lower budget movies that everyone wants to see!
The most notable actor is Vin Diesel (the Fast and the Furious, XXX, Saving Private Ryan) who plays Richard B. Riddick, the Mysterious Fugitive, who after years in dark prisons has had his eyes grow accustomed do dark situations. Once again Vin Diesel gives a performance of that badass character that everyone wants to win. Another mentionable character is Radha Mitchell (Finding Neverland, Melinda Melinda and Silent Hill).
Extras on the DVD:
1. An Introduction by director David Twohy (2.23 minutes)
2. The Game is On (1.46 minutes) This feature delves into Riddick's past as to summarise his 'life' leading up to the events of Pitch Black, such how he got his eyes "shined", how he met the freelance merc Johns, and how he ended up getting captured. This was a good idea because it shows you the beginning of Chronicles of Riddick, allowing you to see what its going to be like
3. The Johns Chase Log (14.10 minutes) A visual, animated and interactive day-by-day diary of the 'merc' Johns' pursuit of Riddick. Taking cues from elements of the back-story mentioned in Pitch Black, this feature creates a more complete story of the chase and capture of Riddick that occurs in the next film.
4. The Chronicles of Riddick Visual Encyclopaedia (4.41 minutes) A sneak peek at the complete Visual Encyclopaedia that will be included on the "Riddick" DVD.
5. Dark Fury: Advancing The Arc (1.28 minutes) Featurette and preview to The Chronicles of Riddick Dark Fury - the animated prequel to The Chronicles of Riddick that bridges the gaps between Pitch Black and the Chronicles of Riddick.
6. A View into the Dark (4.04 mins) An early look into The Chronicles of Riddick, featuring new interviews with Vin Diesel and David Twohy.
7. The Making of Pitch Black featurette (4:41 minutes). If you like to see how films are made this is a good place to start.
The film is full of CGI effects that for a lower budget film you may not expect. Full of great scenes, great character development and accompanied by a decent storyline this film is well worth a watch and certainly should be in anyone's DVD collection that likes Sci-Fi Movies. Also a great place to start if you have watched Chronicles of Riddick or are planning to do so. 8/10
