I was actually the first person in my family to see this (Trust me that's something to make a point about) and most of them didn't think it would be any good even though i said it was a very Enthralling film. One of the marvels of a sci-fi film is how believable it is. The opening scene to this film is familiar to any sci fi fan, travelling through the darkness a spaceship hits unexpected trouble, as the ship hurls towards the nearest planet the narrator introduces the main characters. The camera pans to "Richard B Riddick" played by vin diesel. The opening shot sees him in chains, blindfolder and gagged locked in a pod labelled lockout protocol.
