Loosely inspired by the a Disney theme-park ride, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When camp...
more...Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse.
Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with rope-swinging heroes, crusty villains, treasure hoards, swift swordplay, and even wittier wordplay. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Depp) plenty of room to cut loose. Although the skeletal pirates may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humour to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL a nearly flawless fun film.

This movie is one of the best that i have seen in a long time. It has a solid story line, with action, love and comedy and will appeal to many people. The extra features on the DVD are good, but watch out, watch the film first and then watch the features, or you'll find yourself looking out for the things you've seen in the features, such as the CGI!
Johnny Depp gives a stunning performance as the lovable Captain Jack Sparrow, who, without, the film would not be as fun to watch and would take its self too seriously. Full of amazing actors, including Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom, Pirates of the Caribbean is a film that will be watched frequently, and not left on the self to gather dust. I would also recommend the 2nd and 3rd film as they do not strech out the film or storyline, and are as much fun to watch as the first.
The storyline of the film follows Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) when he appears in Port Royal, with the supposed intention of stealing a ship, this is followed by a comical scene with two guards and Sparrow, and them debating what Sparrows true intentions are (a must see.) Although he saves Elizabeth Swann (Knightley), the Commador's daughter, from drowning, it's not long before Sparrow is in trouble again, this time for being a branded pirate. He makes a stunning escape, until he meets William Turner (Bloom) who cuts off his escape route. Finally captured and put in jail, it seems that Port Royal is once again restored into peace. But then a ship, with black sails, starts to attack the Port, and they take Elizabeth. Desperate to get 'Miss Swann' back, Turner hooks up with the pirate Sparrow and breaking him out of jail, they set out on a rule breaking adventure to rescue the fair lady. Well that is all that Sparrow wants, isn't it? And can he really be trusted? And WHAT IS his obsession with the Black Pearl all about?
