We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot. Drink up me 'earties yo ho! We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot. Drink up me 'earties yo ho!
Directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Pirates of the Caribbean - The curse of the black pearl is as good as it gets when it comes to movies of this genre (possibly to the exclusion of Pirates 2). Why you say? Well knock me down with a wooden leg matey, cause you're just about to find out!
Let's begin with the cream of the cast, if only because it's my review and I want to. Geoffrey Rush has a great time playing the stereotypical lootin', hootin', rum tootin' Captain Barbossa, who along with his crew are cursed to live forever as the undead of the seven seas. How come? Greed. He steals Aztec gold and suffers the consequences of some seriously cool retaliation. Johnny Depp takes his character of Captain Jack Sparrow to memorable infamy, with his complete roguishness and unexpected comedy talents. Jack once commanded the ship The black pearl, but was betrayed by first mate Hector barbossa, who instigated a mutiny and left him stranded. Why would he do such a mean thing you ask? To get his hands on the aforementioned gold of course. Orlando Bloom is the handsome Will Turner, whom we will discover, is the son of one of the pirates who sailed under Captain Sparrow (and what a lovely place to sail). This particular pirate however was opposed to the mutiny and, believing the crew should remain cursed, sent one of the pieces of Aztec gold to his son in the form of a medallion. What do I mean by this? Well, the plot thickens because in order for the thieving rogues to lift the evil eye, they must return every single coin from whence it came. Now do ya see? Oo arr. Then we have the beautiful Keira Knightly starring as Elizabeth Swann, daughter of the governor of Port Royal. How does she fit into all this? She spots the medallion around Will's neck and takes it from him. Why? He's her childhood friend, and she fears that he could be arrested for piracy if it's spotted. Unfortunately she gets herself into serious doo-dah, cause the cursed gold is the final piece required by Barbossa and his crew, and it seems to call to them! Aaarh! Wonderful and convincing performances by all, especially by our man Johnny who has granted legendary status to his character. And to think Jimmy Carrey might have been in his shoes!
On deck, you scabrous dogs! Man the braces! Let down and haul to run free. Now...bring me that horizon. And really bad eggs. Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho. - Jack Sparrow
The scenery is stunning and makes you want to grab a parrott and an eye-patch and join in the fun. As for the special effects, well, all I can say is spectacular and nothing less. The scene where the cursed crew is finally revealed in it's true form by moonlight is exceptional, and made me spill my popcorn all over the place. This movie has it all. A decent storyline, excellent acting talents, breathtaking locations and backdrops, stunning visual effects, handsome men, a lovely leading lady, scary and skeletal enemies, sword-fights, swash-buckling, romance, comedy, rum and all the yo ho ho you could possibly manage in one mouthful. If you haven't seen this Walt Disney developped masterpiece, then you're missing a real treat, and I would suggest you scurry over to your nearest Blockbusters and grab a copy (don't forget your munchies). The second installment has already been delivered to DVD and I for one haven't failed to get my paws on it, but that's another review.
Needless to say that I thank you once again for reading my opinions, and take heed that I opt not to over-chew the details of a product such as a film, choosing instead to dangle tasty morsels (hopefully) for you to ponder over. And now go take a long walk off a short plank.
