Every one in a while a movies comes along and breaks the mould. Pirates of the Caribbean is such a movie.
The 145 minute long blockbuster could probably have withstood a little more fine tuning, both in pre and post production, but it remains fantastic family entertainment. Its thriling, smart, humourous, and has great star appeal with the casting of Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom.
Acting is of an extremely high standard. Geoffrey Rush is wonderful as Barbosa, but Johnny Depp steals the show as Captain Jack Sparrow. There is only one character who draws me back to watch this movie time and time again, and it is Johnny Depp as the mesmerising Captain Jack Sparrow.
The film has three commentary tracks which are both entertaining and rewarding to listen to. The best one is by the screenwriters, although they do tend to spend a little too much time discussing their craft for my tastes. That said, they do spend plenty of time discussing the story and how it came together. Johnny Depp teams up with director Gore Verbinski for commentary which a lot more laid back. Covering topics from production to the movies inherant star appeal. It gets a little repetive, and is limited in content. Keira Knightley and Jack Davenport joke around a lot, and share many memories of their time spent on the shoot.
A 37 minute production documentary, 21 minute collection of behind the scenes footage and a 22 minute history of pirates are all worthwhile viewing. That combined with the other attractions [video diaries, special effects breakdowns, etc] make the special features in this edition far more interesting than your average second disc.
Pirates of the Caribbean for me was one of the best movies of year. With promises of two more films [Dead Man's Chest being due on on DVD soon] I can only hope that these films live up to this exceptional epic. Maybe its not the greatest film ever, but it is an entertaining way to spend an evening and is terrific for a little light relief and escapism.
