What would you say to a film that not only included young international heart-throb Orlando Bloom, but the gorgeous, extremely talented actor that is Mr Johnny Depp? And one that you can watch over and over again? Umm, Yes Please!!!
Pirates of the Caribbean- The Curse of the Black Pearl was released in cinema's in Summer 2003 and is based on the Disney theme park ride. The DVD version was released in December 2003, making it an ideal christmas present for adults and kids(over 12 mind you) alike. Hours of fun can be had with a film that has elements both parents and and their children will enjoy.
Directed by Gore Verbinski Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Music by Klaus Badelt
CAST ------- Johnny Depp - Jack Sparrow Geoffrey Rush - Captain Barbossa Orlando Bloom - Will Turner Keira Knightley - Elizabeth Swann Jack Davenport - Norrington Jonathan Pryce - Governor Swann (Elizabeth's father) Lee Arenberg - Pintel Mackenzie Crook - Ragetti Damian O'Hare - Lt. Gillette Giles New - Murtogg Angus Barnett - Mullroy David Bailie - Cotton Michael Berry Jr. - Twigg

1 - Play film Film Plot --------- The film starts with one of Elizabeths(Knightley's) dreams. It shows a Young Elizabeth out at sea with her father, Governor Swann. Along their journey they rescue a young boy(Will) and pull him aboard. Baffled by their discovery, they take the boy back ashore but little do they know young Elizabeth has taken the boys identity - A pirates medallion!!
To cut the story short,a few years later, Jack(Depp) arrives at the island( a great sequence - his boat sinking lower and lower until he is at the dock and is able to simply walk off the boat's mast), looking to commandeer a ship, to reclaim his precious ship , 'The Black Pearl' which was taken from him. Along the way he finds Will, the son of one of his former Shipmates, 'Bootstrap Bill'. Will needs a ship to go after and rescue the now captured Elizabeth. Figuring they can use each other to get their jobs done, Will and Jack set out to rescue Elizabeth and capture the legendary 'Black Pearl'. Cue swordfights with great special effects of the Black Pearl crew, chases (although not high speed) and an ongoing love story.
Bloom and Knightley, are a little bland and wooden in the straight romantic roles, although it's hard to be more than a sideshow with Depp in such great form, as a slightly camp, drunken Keith Richards.
Classic Line: Elizabeth : So that's it then? That's the secret grand adventure of the infamous Jack Sparrow ? You spent three days lying on a beach, drinking rum?! Jack : Welcome to the Caribbean , love
==============================DISC ONE SPECIAL FEATURES -------------------------------------------- There are 3 interesting commentaries on Disk One. A must to listen to.
Audio commentary with Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp - the best out of the commentaries. My favourite. Johnny and Gore are funny to listen to, swapping anecdotes and enjoying recalling what sounds like an amazing, fun film to shoot. As Johnny said making the movie was more than just fun. "It was criminal. It was a blast," he said.
Audio commentary with Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport and Jerry Bruckheimer - This commentary is quite enjoyable and features a giggly Keira.
Audio commentary with scriptwriters Stuart Beattie, Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio and Jay Wolpert - The least interesting out of the lot in my opinion but you can get to know many of the films ideas and structures from this.Best if you want to know more about the writing side of the film. It depends what your interests in the film are to which commentary you'll enjoy the most.
DVD Rom: Script scanner and storyboard viewer - If you put this disk into your computer you'll find some more little gems. Script scanner shows how the story went from paper to reality. While the storyboard viewer shows us the film in the form of the storyboard drawings.
DISC TWO SPECIAL FEATURES --------------------------------------------
An Epic At Sea documentary - All about the filming sequence.
Fly On The Set - behind-the-scenes featurette - One of the actors takes a camera and walks around the set - talking to other actors and giving his own views on what is happening around him
Video Diaries: Producer's Photo Diary, Diary Of A Pirate - from the actors point of view and Diary Of A Ship - gives an insight into the voyage of the real life "Interceptor", that was used in the film, from Port to the Caribbean.
Below Deck virtual tour of pirate history and folklore - history of the "real" lives of the Pirates of old
Deleted and extended scenes (19!) - Lots of footage that wasn't used in the film. And I think rightly so as many of these clips would have added nothing extra to the film.
Moonlight Serenade Scene Progression effects breakdown - shows they how they went about making the skeleton curse effect.
Pirates In The Parks - archive footage of the Disney attraction
Blooper reel - Leave this treat for last: the highly amusing blooper reel featuring nearly all the main cast members. Quite a few mistakes here then!
DVD Rom: Image gallery slide show - shots from the film Dead Men Tell No Tales - history of Disney attraction Moonlight Becomes Ye effects studio - turn yourself into a cursed skeleton with this DVD-ROM effects studio. Disneyland Pirates Virtual Reality Viewer and weblinks
This two disc set just keeps delivering pieces of great(get it?).I recieved this last christmas and sat down in the afternoon with my whole family and watched it. Even my Nan at 86 enjoyed it! Excellent value for money - well worth any money! Even just to ogle Orlando and Johnny. Or Keira in the mens case. A MUST BUY!! Miss it and Miss out.
Also look out for the sequel 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' next year. I can't wait!
Thanks for reading.
