First things first, this is a draft of my first piece of GCSE coursework, so please bit as critical as you can be, and I'm putting it down without the extras on the DVD etc, so can you just think of it as if it was from a magazine, thanks. ****************************************************
Pirates of the Caribbean was one of the smash hits in the film industry last year, and was raved about for long after. Watch it, and you’ll see why! The film starts by introducing us to Governor Swann (Jonathan Pryce), whose young daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) is on board his ship when they see a burning ship which has been under attack from the infamous Black Pearl, and against the advice of his young wannabee Norrington (Jack Davenport), he agrees to save a young boy and ensures he is put into safe care on land. Orlando Bloom plays the child, Will Turner who is the son of an ex-pirate, but only Elizabeth knows that as she took a piece of evidence, which proves it.
The film moves on eight years, and Elizabeth has grown into a stunning young woman, who the promoted Commodore Norrington, would like to marry. Also, now grown up Will Turner, also likes her, but tries to keep his feelings locked up, as he works as a lowly blacksmith, in the serene town of Port Royal. When we are introduced to Johnny Depp’s character, Captain Jack Sparrow, it is obvious by the introduction he is given by the producers that he is going to play a leading role in the film. Before this film was released, Johnny Depp wasn’t that highly regarded from his other films, but his sensational performance in this, has turned many people. Later we find that he was betrayed by his second in command, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) while he was captain upon the Black Pearl. He is caught by Norrington and his men, but uses him saving Elizabeth from drowning as an alibi, only to be captured when he’s knocked out in a sword fight with the skilful Will.
Barbossa and his crew are victims of a curse, and whilst trying to free themselves from it, they invade Port Royal, and capture Elizabeth. Will once again shows his feeling about Elizabeth, when he confronts Norrington, and complains about the lack of effort being put in to try to find her. He ends up getting the help from Jack, who is locked up in a cell, and the pair go in pursuit of the Black Pearl. During this time, we discover that Will’s father wasn’t any ordinary pirate, he was a well respected pirate by the name of Bootstrap Bill. However, Will doesn’t want to believe it, as he has been told that his father was a merchant sailor, who travelled the world. It’s now that the film really starts, and as it develops, two plots emerge, Will’s love for Elizabeth, and Jack’s determination, to recapture the Black Pearl. The visual effects in the film are stunning, with many great pieces of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). An interesting point in the film is that women are portrayed in a different way, like when Elizabeth could act like the ‘Damsel In Distress’ during he capture, she gets her hands dirty and mucks in with all the men, giving it all she’s got.
This really is a ten out of ten, top notch film, which has everything. It’s got fighting, humour, a plot that makes sense, and even love. This really is one of the best films I have ever seen, and if you really want to get an idea of just how special it is, watch it a second time in stages, to get the full value from it.
