Anybody who knows me will know that I am hooked on doing film reviews! For enjoyment my next review is going to be on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
For all you Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp fans out there, sit bums on sofas with bucket loads of popcorn and watch this movie!!
In the usual style I'll begin with a few well chosen quotes from some film critics!
"Peg-legs, parrots, hidden treasure, plank-walking, and plunging necklines... Now, that's what a pirate movie is about!" Staci Layne Wilson, FANTASTICA DAILY
"Johnny Depp's roguish Jack Sparrow is every bit as unforgettable as his squeamish Ichabod Crane in 'Sleepy Hollow.'" Betty Jo Tucker, REELTALK MOVIE REVIEWS
"It's something we've been lacking at the cinema for a while now: pure fun." Widgett Walls, NEEDCOFFEE.COM
Well guys, if they like it that ought to give you a clue as to what it's like! Personally I back these guys 100%!!

***ACTORS AND ACTRESSES***
Here are the main actors and actresses and a few of the films that they have been or starred in!
Johnny
Depp - Sleepy Hollow, From Hell.
Geoffrey Rush - Quills, The Tailor of Panama.
Orlando Bloom - The Calcium Kid, Lord of the Rings Films.
Keira Knightley - Bend It Like Beckham, Love Actually.
Captain Jack Sparrow Played by actor Johnny Depp. Jack Sparrow was once the Captain of the Black Pearl and has a slightly odd quirk about him. A great sense of humour and some of the facial expressions that he comes out with are dead funny! Jack is a happy-go-lucky pirate and somehow founds his way out of every situation!!
Captain Barbossa Played by actor Geoffrey Rush. Barbossa....the first mate of the Black Pearl who after revolting along with the rest of the crew is now captain of the Black Pearl. A smart, intelligent guy he has a secret up his sleeve and a cute little monkey too! The baddy in the film, Barbossa is not to be messed with!
William (Will) Turner Jr Played by actor Orlando Bloom. The cute guy! William Turner was named after his father and doesn't remember much about his past. He detests pirates and is more or less runs a blacksmith shop mainly making swords for others. A skilled fighter, you kinda wonder where he learned to fight like that! Will also has a little crush on our next character.....
Elizabeth Swann Played by actress Keira Knightley. Elizabeth is the daughter of the Govenor and is constantly being hounded to find a husband. Elizabeth can certainly handle herself with the exception of wearing a corset and isn't shy to tell somebody what she thinks of them! You get the feeling she likes Will too, but Elizabeth has a secret herself to hide. Elizabeth has also catched the eye of another guy...our next character in fact!
Commodore Norrington Played by actor Jack Davenport. Commodore Norrington recently came into a promotion and has known Elizabeth since she was a little girl. Seeing her grown up now, Commodore has grown a romantic attachment to her and would very much like to marry her. A little big headed and sometimes over his head, Commodore Norrington is not a huge fan of Jack Sparrow and makes no bones about disliking him so.
Governor Weatherby Swann Played by actor Jonathan Pryce. Well he's the Govenor. Constantly pressing for his daughter Elizabeth to find a husband, meaning Norrington he is a kind hearted man willing to do anything for her daughter and just like any father...wants to protect her and for her to be happy.
***PLOT***
Buena Vista Pictures presents Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffery Rush, Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport and Jonathan Pryce in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
The film begins with a little girl singing on a ship. It's Elizabeth Swann as a little girl. She'd love to be a pirate but everyone knows that its bad luck to have a woman onboard a ship! Now isn't that sexist?
When Elizabeth sees a small boy in the water close to the ship, she cries out for him to be rescued. When the camera pans around you see that a ship has been destroyed and has gone up in flames. The crew pull the small boy out of the water. Elizabeth is asked to care for the boy and to try and talk to him. Elizabeth learns that his name is Will Turner and from the looks of things he is the same age as Elizabeth.
However a gold medallion around Will's neck intrigues Elizabeth and she takes it but doesn't tell anyone. There is something about it....
Cut to about 10 years later I'd say...and it turns out that Elizabeth has grown up and was dreaming about the day she met Will. She still has the medallion though!
Elizabeth's father surprises her by saying that Norrington has just received a promotion and asks Elizabeth to attend the ceremony. Commodore Norrington as he is now called takes Elizabeth aside to tell her that he is considering asking her to marry him.....Not that she gets much of a chance to reply as she falls off the ledge and down into the rocky water below.
Meanwhile we meet the infamous Jack Sparrow who has landed in Port Royal and is now looking for a new ship, seeing as how his last one sunk! When Jack finds a suitable ship, he is met with some resistance by two guards. After seeing that Elizabeth has fallen into the sea, Jack bravely dives in after her.
But something mysterious happens to Elizabeth. The medallion she was wearing sends out a pulse, almost like a signal across the ocean....
After Jack rescues her he is arrested! (Poor guy!) But this is Jack Sparrow and he always escapes!
At night Port Royal is suddenly attacked by wait for it....The Black Pearl. The Black Pearl and it's crew and Captain...Captian Barbossa, are looking for something, and you guessed it...it's the medallion. The crew kidnap Elizabeth and when Jack and Will (who is all grown up and has a bit of a crush on Elizabeth) learn of this, they decide to go and rescue her and for Jack to retake the Black Pearl which he was once captain of.
WARNING!!!! SEVERE PLOT SPOILER HERE...DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW ANYMORE!!!
It turns out that Barbossa and his crew stole an ancient treasure, a treasure that had a terrible curse placed upon it. Anyone who removed but a single piece of that treasure would live the life of the undead. Barbossa and his crew are neither alive nor dead. In order for the curse to be lifted, Barbossa and his crew must return every single last piece of the treasure and Elizabeth has the last remaining piece of it....the medallion!
Will Jack get his ship back? Why did he lose it in the first place? and can Will save Elizabeth? If you want to know...I'm not telling because you'll have to buy it and watch it for yourself!!
***QUOTES***
There are some great quotes in this film to include here.....
JACK SPARROW: "That's the one!! Parley!!" PIRATE: "PARLEY?!? Damn to the depths of hell whatever mug thought of the name Parley!!!!!" JACK SPARROW: "That would be the French"
JACK SPARROW: "...you forgot one very important thing mate.....I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."
NORRINGTON: "You are without a doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of." JACK SPARROW: "But you have heard of me"
***MY PERSONAL OPINION***
A quick note....if anyone is confused by the Parley quote above...i'll just explain that one.....someone who is about to be captured by a Pirate can shout out PARLEY. When they do it means that the pirates can not hurt them and that they have to take that person to their captain.
Now...I loved this film. Some people have said to me that the actors and actresses can make or break a film. I couldn't agree more with this as I think that Johnny Depp makes this film with his portrayal of Jack Sparrow. The accent not to mention the acting is flawless and I think this is the best perfomance by Johnny Depp yet! You'll find this film to be funny as it's not so much what the characters say, it's how they act and say it. Every actor and actress was perfectly chosen for their role and for all the ladies out there....Orlando Bloom has never looked finer! Yum!
The special effects are something else as well but it's really amazing I think what can be done with the help of a computer these days! But what about the story? Well I think the average image of a pirate is Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam blasting each other with cannons wearing oversized pirate style hats! Not in this case I'm afraid....no lop-sided bunny rabbits here! Must be the first pirate movie I have seen and I've really enjoyed it! I hope you do to!!
The decision is yours!
Happy trails kids!
Leila :)
