Pirates Of The Carribean, I must admit, was not my first choice for a cup of tea and a trip to the cinema, but as I was going with a friend, I thought I'd see what it was like and I had to say, at least, it was a good film.
Johnny Depp plays a character called Jack. He's, what we first assume, a no-good pirate who comes onto the island for nefarious purposes. Then we have the character played by Orlando Bloom, Will Turner, who, unbeknownst to him, is the son of a pirate whose identity was protected when a young girl called Elizabeth took a treasure that is sought after by the dangerously evil pirate Barbossa. I won't say why he wants it, but let's say that his crew has a cursed secret.
In the film, the acting is quite well done. I really thought that Jack would not be in the film for all that long until I discovered he was played by Johnny Depp. He actually has a score to settle with Barbossa because he was stranded on an island by him some time back.
Will Turner, to be honest, is quite a good character as well. The chemistry between Bloom and Depp is very good in the film and the comedy arises because of this and there is a very funny continuous sequence of a man and his eye!
The film goes along quite quickly though I did begin to wonder whether or not the film was going to be three hours or not and I thanked my lucky stars it wasn't because although it was good, it didn't half drag in some places.
Geoffrey Rush made a chilling villain and it was great to see him add some darkness to the film as he tried to get back the treasure that Elizabeth has. Of course, Elizabeth and Will are secretly in love. The final climax is very good. It sort of reminds you of Lord Of The Rings/Star Wars climax.
The script is well written and although it has its rather poor bits, it doesn't really suffer that much because who can blame a scriptwriter? The pressure must be immense.
Overall a good film that suffers only slightly.
