Shiver me timbers, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp - CHARLIE & THE CHOLOLATE FACTORY, ED WOOD) returns in this rip-roaring, sea-faring sequel to the colossal hit, CURSE OF THE...
more...BLACK PEARL. Reunited with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom - KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, TROY) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley - PRIDE & PREJUDICE, DOMINO), Sparrow must face his greatest adversary yet – the nautically naughty Davey Jones (Bill Nighy – LOVE ACTUALLY, THE GIRL IN THE CAFE). Directed by Gore Verbinski (THE RING, MOUSE HUNT), DEAD MAN'S CHEST is every bit as exiting as it's predecessor and sets the scene for part three in the trilogy, AT WORLDS END.

The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film.

Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls.

The film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel).

Curse of the Black Pearl" was a stand-alone story, this is the first half of a two part sequel. "Dead Man's Chest" was filmed at the same time as the third "Pirates" film, "At world's end".

If you liked the first film, and want an encore, you'll very probably like this. If you are looking for much in the way of development, you may be disappointed. If you didn't like "Curse of the Black Pearl" you almost certainly won't like this one either.

Some parts of the film, including a number of humorous references to lines in "Curse of the Black Pearl" and the cliff-hanger ending, largely depend on the viewer having seen the first film. I would advise anyone who is thinking of watching this second film to watch the first one before you do.

If you can switch off your critical faculties and ignore the fact that history, geography, and nautical legend are being twisted about like a pretzel, "Dead Man's Chest" can be quite funny and entertaining. A lot of the acting was very good, particularly from Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly, Bill Nighy, and expecially Johnny Depp, and this carries the film along.

Special effects were good in the first film, but the makers of the film have surpassed themselves this time. Davy Jones' ghostly ship has the ability to surface and dive like a submarine, and the creators of the film somehow manage to make a sailing ship doing this look real enough to fool the eyes.

This was just one of a large number of brilliant effects. Nighy and several other members of the cast manage to act while encased in incredibly elaborate costumes which make them appear half man, half marine creature (in Davy Jones' case he is half octopus.)

Treat this film as a bit of light hearted fun and you'll probably enjoy it.

Have now seen the 3rd installment which is brilliant and ties up all the loose ends. This is one of the best sequels and trilogies ever.
