Arrrr me hearties, welcome aboard this review of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, ye salty sea dogs. And stuff.
This sea-quel (yo ho ho) to the 2003 surprise mega hit brings back the original main cast of Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, plus all the rest; it also brings in a new villain, Davy Jones (comes complete with his locker), played by Bill Nighy. It smashed the US record for most bounty hauled in on the opening weekend, netting over $130 million in 3 days, and it didn't do badly over this side of the high seas either, raking in £11 million in its opening weekend. It's also only the third film ever to gross more than $1 billion worldwide. All in all, it was quite a big film.
The story of this latest adventure is as follows: Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann (Bloom and Knightley) are arrested for their part in helping Capt. Jack Sparrow (Depp) escape at the end of the last film, and are threatened with the gallows. However, they can escape this if they manage to track down the Sparrow's magic compass, which shows the direction to whatever the owner desires. They find him on an island of savages who try to eat him, but they all escape and have some sword fights. They then run into Davy Jones and the rest of his watery crew on The Flying Dutchman, who tells Jack that he must bring him 100 souls otherwise Will will (sorry) have to spend the rest of eternity on the ship. Not that he'd mind, since he finds his father, Bootstrap Bill (played by Stellan Skarsgard) on the old Dutch. Throw into this chaos a key to a chest containing Davy Jones's beating heart; a rampaging giant octopus sea monster; and a crazy woman with a thick Jamaican accent, and you have a film which makes no sense whatsoever.
First things first, I'll get the bad news over and done with: this sequel is not as good as the original. Not many surprises there then. Basically, the story (if you can even call it that) has too much going on, yet ultimately feels as if nothing much has happened. The film lasts 150 minutes, and it's just so overloaded with pointless subplots that it threatens to capsize, or just sink under its own jetsam. You won't have a clue what's going on, and you probably will be past caring by the time it's over.
Saying that though, if you can look past the story, what's left is (mostly) a jolly good film. Maybe the story is so bad because it's fighting for space with a barrel-load of bombastic set pieces, and in a summer blockbuster, only one will triumph and the other will sink down like it's caught in the Bermuda Triangle. The CGI is astonishing, particularly on the crew of the Dutchman. Bill Nighy is unrecognisable under a face of squirming CGI tentacles, and the rest of his crew include a hammer-head shark and someone looking like a puffer fish. They all look completely realistic (even Mr. Puffer), and arrr worth the admission price alone (see what I did there?).
The same goes for the sea monster, called the Kraken, which has a habit of smashing ships in half and throwing its crew around the air in a flurry of CGI action brilliance. The final sequence involving this monster as it takes on Captain Jack and the crew is an amazing sight, albeit a little over-edited until you can hardly tell what's going on, so actually not much of sight at all.
What impressed me the most though were the action sequences that weren't reliant on CGI. My favourite part of the film is when Johnny Depp is running around tied to a giant kebab stick, and there's a pretty nifty fight involving fruit - yes you heard me, pineapples and mangos have never been so dangerous or hilarious. Some other great sequences include two giant swinging rope cages, and a sword fight on top of a rolling water wheel - highly implausible, but thoroughly entertaining.
A key part of both Pirates films has been the humour; after all, they are family-orientated movies. This is mainly down to Johnny Depp's fantastic performances as the roguish Sparrow, although the script in the first film did have some really funny lines too. However, in this sequel, I thought the comedy had become a bit too lamely physical: Johnny Depp falling down a hole isn't funny, nor is Johnny Depp falling down a flight of stairs. That's not to say there weren't funny moments; the fruit scene as I mentioned earlier was inspired, and there were a few other laugh out loud moments.
I just thought that the script wasn't quite as good as the first film. The novelty of Depp's performance is starting to wear off and the "savvy" routine just isn't funny any more (although thankfully it was kept to a minimum). Most of the humour in this film came from references to the first one, such as Will asking to give a message to Jack before being slapped in the face by the woman who did that in the first film. Also, there are a plethora of references to the "why's the rum gone" scene. I couldn't help detecting the fishy smell of the writers covering up a lack of fresh ideas with stuff they'd already done, like a parrot that keeps repeating itself.
The acting from Johnny Depp is still great, and Keira Knightley is good too - she's beautiful and feisty and can do action sequences and even a bit of comedy. Sadly, Orlando Bloom is still as terrible as he was in the first film. It's as if he was carved out of some excess wood from the production of the ships into the shape of a good-looking bloke and just placed next to the real actors to attract the teenage girls. He has no emotion, no passion, he's not funny, and he doesn't actually have that big a role in the main story. He'd be good as one of those wooden people that stick out on the front of pirate ships, or maybe they could carve his arm off and turn it into a peg leg for the next film. Basically, the film would have been better were he not in it at all.
Don't get me wrong, I did quite like this film - even though it's really really long, the time flew by thanks to the great pacing and the non-stop action. There's so much to enjoy here, and the obvious fun there're all having is infectious. Plus the outstandingly catchy soundtrack from Klaus Badelt is still here, and remains one of the best things about the film - the music just carries you along on a big tsunami of energy, and perks up the film when it needs it, and just basically gets you the pirate spirit (rum, that is).
I even liked the ending, which is sure to be a contentious talking point and fervent divider of opinions. You have to realise that Pirates 3 has already been made, so don't expect an ending that kills off the main characters. You may hate the way that you've spent two and a half hours of your life watching a film with no proper conclusion. Or, like me, you might be so caught up in the action that when the ending comes, you're thinking "Oh, the end so soon? I can't wait for the next instalment!". Yes, it's a little bit cynical and smacks of money-grabbing, but you can't deny the unexpected whale of a twist as… oh whatever, you're bound to know it already, but I won't spoil it anyway.
So to sum up, Dead Man's Chest is a decent enough film, probably better than most other films this summer (that's not saying much though). It's just that the trademark "summer blockbuster" faults, which were pretty much completely disguised the first time round by the originality of the story and the panache of the execution, are starting to peek out and steal your attention. Add to that the fact that it's a sequel after all, and it was always going to be a little bit of a damp squid.
Oh and they totally ripped off 24's "Jack's Back" advertising campaign for the DVD release. I'll take a point off for that. _______________________________________________

...to undergo this treatment is Pirates of the Caribbean. The first film was a huge success, but whether a sequel or two would be able to add to the appeal remained to be seen.

It's still quite a fresh and original concept but certainly a lot of that is down to the charm and appeal of the actors portrayal of the lead characters. While I don't think the film works on its own it certainly works as part of the series and for that reason I recommend everyone watches both films together. This makes ...

Pirates of the Caribbean and the Dead Mans Chest is the second film in the pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and is more than a worthy sequel. The film is once again a fast-paced humorous adventure that invites the audience to climb aboard and immerse themselves in the ship-rocking storm of a story. In Port Royal Elizabeth and Will's wedding plans aren't exactly going to plan. On their wedding day the pair find themselves arrested for helping Captain ... ...and the storyline. The now-familiar Pirates of the Caribbean is often heard, signifying that greater action is on its way and is combined with much subtler pieces of music for an overall brilliant effect.
The cast once again performs together perfectly. The relationships they have with one another continue to blossom but it is Jack, who once again despite what he does is loved from the start, who steals the show. His dead-pan humour is combined ...

The second in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, this is an entertaining, action-packed film that all the family can enjoy. Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are arrested on their wedding day for their involvement in Jack Sparrow's escape, and Will strikes a bargain with his captors in order to ensure their freedom. Advantages: Great story, super acting, quite funny in places Disadvantages: None
After loving the first Pirates film I just had to watch the second! The second in the series is called DeadMan's Chest and again it stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.
The film starts with Elizabeth and Will trying to get married but before this happens Will is arrested and so is Elizabeth. They are sentenced to death for helping pirates. Will manages to evade the death penalty by agreeing to help capture Jack and return a compass which he has on his person to the English Navy in Port Royal.
Will sets off in search of Jack and finds him sailing the sea. Elizabeth is left behind but soon she finds herself aboard a ship as a stowaway and soon catches up with Will. Whilst at sea they encounter a monstrous sea creature who is summoned by Davey Jones to get sailors down to his locker.
Davey Jones is the ruler ...

Pirates of the Caribbean - DeadMan's Chest
This is a Walt Disney film and is the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl and is directed by Gore Verbinski.
Both films are about old day pirates sailing the seas around the Caribbean, in waters full of weird and exciting things.

Bill, Stellan Skarsgaard hunches his shoulders and rumbles his lines, while Tom Hollander takes over from Jack Davenport as the smug and self-important character, as Lord Cutler Beckett. It's a shame he doesn't have more to do or stronger writing that makes his intentions more understandable.
Hans Zimmer provides a full-blooded score once more that uses his music from the first film as a basis. It's big, brassy and full of brooding string sections, booming kettle drums and foreboding horns. However, it has a tendency to feel derivative as Zimmer reuses the original themes as a refrain. At lighter moments he steps away from the orchestra and uses folk fiddle for brawls and baroque organ themes for Davy Jones own tinkling of the ivories.

Shiver me timbers, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp - CHARLIE & THE CHOLOLATE FACTORY, ED WOOD) returns in this rip-roaring, sea-faring sequel to the colossal hit, CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL. Reunited with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom - KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, TROY) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley - PRIDE & PREJUDICE, DOMINO), Sparrow must face his greatest adversary yet – the nautically naughty Davey Jones (Bill Nighy – LOVE ACTUALLY, THE GIRL IN THE CAFE). Directed by Gore Verbinski (THE RING, MOUSE HUNT), DEAD MAN'S CHEST is every bit as exiting as it's predecessor and sets the scene for part three in the trilogy, AT WORLDS END.
