As we have now come to nursery and school holidays again a large portion of our days (if the sun doesn't come out) will be spent watching our vast video collection.
Looking out on this dreary Monday, it is time for the first. Bring on Pinocchio - another Disney classic which was made in 1940.
It was Disney's second full-length animated feature film, based on Carlo Collodi's nineteenth century children's classic about a wooden puppet who became a real boy. When released, the film won Best Original Musical Score and Best Song Academy Awards with delightful songs such as "When You Wish Upon a Star", "I've Got No Strings" and "An Actor's Life For Me".
The story begins with lonely woodcutter, Geppetto, who only has his cat, Figaro and goldfish, Cleo for company, finishing off making his puppet, Pinocchio and wishing he were a real boy. In a puff of smoke the Blue Fairy appears, waves her wand and brings Pinocchio to life. He is still, however, made of wood and she tells Pinocchio that in order to become a real boy he has to be honest and be able to choose between right and wrong. (A lesson there for all our children).
Pinocchio, however, finds this is not so easy as he is led astray by several colourful characters along the way, including Honest John, who convinces Pinocchio he can earn a fortune being an actor. Then there is Stromboli, the evil, puppet-master, who wants to use Pinocchio's talents to make a fortune for himself.
Then there is the streetwise lad, Lampwick who becomes friends with Pinocchio when they finish up on Pleasure Island (a carnival for stupid boys). Not even Jiminy Cricket (the well-dressed little cricket) who agreed to be Pinocchio's conscience can keep him on the straight and narrow and out of trouble.
When, after all the adventures he manages to make his way home, (looking a bit peculiar - you'll have to watch it to find out what I mean) he finds that while his father, Geppetto has been looking for him he has been swallowed by Monstro, the whale. Now Pinocchio's true worth will be tested as he goes off to try to save his father. Will he do the right things and eventually become a real boy? Well, I'm not going to tell you. If you want to find out you will have to watch the film.
For a film which was made 63 years ago there are moral issues in here which send out excellent messages to all children. Firstly, there was the part in the story when Pinocchio lies to the Blue Fairy and his nose grows longer and longer for each lie he tells. Then we are faced with Pinocchio and his so-called friend, Lampwick who enjoys drinking, playing pool and smoking cigars. He eventually turns into a donkey (an ass) showing children that rather than being clever he is very stupid. Good morals for such an old film.
A brilliant, magical film that is classified "U" meaning the whole family can watch and enjoy. It runs for 85 minutes so you get a good hour and a half of viewing on these dull spring days.
Although I have the video it is now also available on DVD from Amazon (www.Amazon.co.uk). They are both priced at £15.99 new but can be picked up a lot cheaper second hand.
I highly recommend this film for anyone who has never had the pleasure of watching it. Like most Disney movies it never seem to date and is enjoyed as much today as when it was first released. It is definitely a viewing must for anyone who has ever wished upon a star!!
Pinocchio is one of the oldest and best known of the early classic Disney full length animations. For those of you who don't know the story (surely there can be hardly anyone in that category), a carpenter carves himself a wooden puppet of a boy because he wants a son so badly. The good fairy waves her magic wand and the puppet comes to life, he gets badly misled by some undesirable types, but eventually redeems himself sufficiently to be granted ... ...... whew!
The cartoon version of the tale is excellent, with some classic, if very mushy and sentimental, music like When You Wish Upon A Star and I've Got No Strings and includes some excellent characters, although it's the baddies who take the honours (how unusual, why has the devil got all the best songs). The Fox and the Cat are good entertainment, but it's the Coachman (remember the scene in the inn, where his face assumes fairly nightmarish ...

ok, the story of a little wooden boy whose nose grew everytime he told a lie, who got taken to a fantasy island for kids by two big baddies and who started to turn into a donkey before being eaten by a whale and getting out again may sound a tad unbeleivable but it makes good entertainment! the most amazing thing in this film is how the little goldfish still manages to stay in his bowl even in the middle of the ocean! its beyond me anyway! and who ...

In the end, Pinocchio saves the toymaker and he is rewarded by getting his greatest wish - to become a real boy (with no strings)
Lovely songs that run throughout the film. ...

...a legend in my house! Pinocchio is as everyone knows a puppet, who wants to be a real boy. The story follows his antics from being part of a puppet show to going to Pleasure Island the story really can be taken in two ways, children see the innocence in this little puppet and learn lessons about strangers, but adults see the darker side of Walt Disneys story telling and really it was ahead of time addressing alot of the issues that parent really ...

Disney's Pinnochio is another one of the disney classics that was not made by the modern computer technology, but was instead made by artists designing each frame. A good kids movie but no good for anyone else in my opinion. It may have it's good points but overall it is boring. Everyone knows what happens throughout the film from word of mouth and advertising and watching the film does not give you any more ideas as to the plot. Basically, a puppet ...

Pinocchio. What can I say? A classic in its own right adored by children and adults equally. This is an absolute timeless Disney Animation that I could watch time and time again and never get sick of.
I bought my own copy of this DVD for £17.99 from Music Zone. I've noticed it selling for up to £25 so, as I always say with chart and Disney DVDs, it's very much worth shopping around.
Pinocchio was the first animated Disney Classic to receive the DVD treatment and it is easy to see why, though the 1999 initial DVD release was somewhat disappointing in the lack of extras and seeming lack of any picture or sound improvement. This though, could perhaps be put down to Disney "testing the water" in terms of DVD being a relatively new format. However, we all know it took off in a major way and so the most recent release has been improved ...

"...Awesomely restored..." -- 4 out of 4 stars (USA Today, p.3D, 26/03/1993)
DVD Description
Walt Disney's second full-length animated feature is a timeless, breathtakingly beautiful classic. Based on an 1800s story by Carlo Collodi, it stars Jiminy Cricket (voiced by Cliff Edwards) as a vagabond insect who spends a rainy night at the shop of toymaker Geppetto. The Blue Fairy brings a marionette to life after Geppetto wishes on a star for a son, and Jiminy Cricket is appointed the new boy's conscience. He has a devil of a time keeping up as Pinocchio is willingly lured through various forms of temptation, the most frightening of which leads him to Pleasure Island, where he drinks, smokes, and is almost turned into a jackass. This sequence, as well as Pinocchio's brave rescue of Geppetto from the belly of a whale, ranks among the most memorable in the history of animation. With such songs as When You Wish Upon a Star, this is about as magical as cinema can get, a sublimely beautiful coming-of-age story for all to treasure.
