Another great Disney film and another of the older classic ones! In fact this particular one is really one of the older ones as it is the 2nd ever Disney animated film. This is Pinocchio which I'm sure many of us will have seen at some point during either our own childhood or with children. The film was released in 1940.
The plot: Pinocchio is a wooden toy made by toymaker Gepetto. After he is finished making him he comments on how nice it would be if he was a 'real boy' and then after seeing a wishing star he makes a wish that this would come true! That night a fairy comes into Gepetto's and grants him his wish. She gives Pinocchio the gift of life and tells him that if he is a good boy who is brave, truthful and unselfish he will someday be a real boy instead of a wooden boy. She gives Jiminy Cricket the job of being his conscience who tries to teach him right from wrong. We then follow Pinocchio as he goes off to have his first day at school - he is distracted along the way though and meets Honest John who persuades him to come along and join the circus where he is then held captive.
Will Pinocchio be able to get back to his Gepetto and will Jiminy Cricket be able to help him?
Cast: Plenty of voices for this film who did the characters speaking parts with all the main ones listed below -
Pinocchio - Dickie Jones Gepetto - Christian Rub Jiminy Cricket - Cliff Edwards The fairy - Evelyn Venable Lampwick - Frankie Darro Honest John - Walter Catlett The coachman/Stromboli - Charles Judels Figaro/Cleo/Gideon - Mel Blanc
Most of the actors in this Disney film were not used in further Disney animated films apart from Cliff Edwards who still did the voice of Jiminy Cricket in further Disney productions. However, the man who did the character sounds of Figaro, Cleo and Gideon later went on to do lots of voice parts for plenty of other cartoon characters including Daffy Duck, Pluto, Barney Rubble and Bugs Bunny!
Extras: The DVD I have is a special edition so includes some extras. These are listed below - The search for Jiminy Cricket - a game suitable for young children. A wish come true: The making of Pinocchio Storyboard to final film comparison Original 1940's theatrical trailer Two sing along songs which are: Figaro and Cleo/ Little wooden head Two short cartoons which are: 'I'm no fool having fun' and 'I'm no fool with fire'
Overall opinion: Pinocchio is another one of those Disney classic films that most people will have seen because of it being only the 2nd one that came out. It really is a fun film although for very young children there are a couple of parts that may be a little scary. However the film also carries a very important lesson in life that children will learn such as not talking to strangers and being a good person by doing what is right over wrong. There are plenty of songs in this film with classics such as 'Give a little whistle!' and 'Hi Diddle Dee Dee' which will both have your feet tapping along! Also I think when anyone thinks of Pinocchio they always think of his long nose which grew when he told a lie! I know that's what I always think of!! A recommended Disney film by me.
The film is rated U so is suitable for everyone and a copy of the DVD can be picked up for around the £12 mark on various online stores.
Advantages: Jiminy Cricket, clever animation, lovely score Disadvantages: Lack of good songs, too scary for young children
...Story The story of Pinocchio begins, not with the main character with himself, but with the film’s guide and narrator Jiminy Cricket (a cricket, mind bendingly enough!) He takes shelter from the cold in the house of Gepetto, a toymaker who has just finished building a wooden puppet. Just before going to sleep, Gepetto sees that one of the stars in the night sky is a wishing star: and so, as a lonely old man with only his cat and fish for company ... ...doesn’t have. But even though Pinocchio appears around four or five years old, he is as innocent as the day he was born (which is., effectively, the day the film begins) and it is his naivety and trust in others that lands him in the series of scrapes that form the main body of the film. Characters The good characters in this film display a great deal of charm. Pinocchio is an engaging lead character, although consistently upstaged by Jiminy Cricket, ...

...much worth shopping around.
Pinocchio was the first animated Disney Classic to receive the DVD treatment and it is easy to see why, though the 1999 initial DVD release was somewhat disappointing in the lack of extras and seeming lack of any picture or sound improvement. This though, could perhaps be put down to Disney "testing the water" in terms of DVD being a relatively new format. However, we all know it took off in a major way and so the most ... ...well, as we all know! Pinocchio is the story of a puppet who longs to be a real boy. Built by Geppetto, who is very lonely. Geppetto wishes so much that Pinocchio could be a real boy. Geppetto is an honourable fellow and so his wishes are helped along their way by the Blue Fairy, who gives Pinocchio a certain degree of life. He is able to speak and move freely but is still wooden. In order to become a real boy he must learn the difference between ...

Pinocchio is one of those great films that you can revisit again and again throughout your whole life. If anyone says that animation is only for children, show them this film - it is very dark in places and scared me quite a bit as a child! But now it is my very favourite of all the Disney classics.

Advantages: Timeless in nearly every way Disadvantages: They just don't make 'em like this any more
Pinnochio, to me, is a timeless movie. I think that is some of the magic of the early Disney films - they could transport you into this amazing world that made you laugh and made you cry. The only thing bringing you crashing back down sometimes was how the quality of the movie had seemed to diminish with time. The transfers to DVD have definitely done a lot to remedy that and it great to have such a classic movie as part of my collection. Watching ... ...love with this movie as a child. The beautiful and mischievous naievity of Pinnochio and the constant ignoring of his conscience Jiminy Cricket as well as the hindsight "I should have listened" at every turn not only amuses but also acts as a bit of a moral compass in some respects. And the adventure of a boy who is different and tries to fit in and always secretly wants to be something more can also touch even the hardest of hearts. ...

Pinocchio is one of the oldest and best known of the early classic Disney full length animations. For those of you who don't know the story (surely there can be hardly anyone in that category), a carpenter carves himself a wooden puppet of a boy because he wants a son so badly. The good fairy waves her magic wand and the puppet comes to life, he gets badly misled by some undesirable types, but eventually redeems himself sufficiently to be granted everybody's wish to be transformed into a real human boy ... whew!
The cartoon version of the tale is excellent, with some classic, if very mushy and sentimental, music like When You Wish Upon A Star and I've Got No Strings and includes some excellent characters, although it's the baddies who take the honours (how unusual, why has the devil got all the best songs). The Fox and the Cat are ...
Advantages: Teaches moral issues in a fun way and great viewing. Disadvantages: None.
with Pinocchio and his so-called friend, Lampwick who enjoys drinking, playing pool and smoking cigars. He eventually turns into a donkey (an ass) showing children that rather than being clever he is very stupid. Good morals for such an old film.
A brilliant, magical film that is classified "U" meaning the whole family can watch and enjoy. It runs for 85 minutes so you get a good hour and a half of viewing on these dull spring days.
Although I have the video it is now also available on DVD from Amazon (www.Amazon.co.uk). They are both priced at £15.99 new but can be picked up a lot cheaper second hand.
I highly recommend this film for anyone who has never had the pleasure of watching it. Like most Disney movies it never seem to date and is enjoyed as much today as when it was first released. It is definitely a viewing must for anyone ...
Advantages: Great story Great animation Great lessons learned Disadvantages: Can be quite distressing to young children
This is a fantastic disney classic that will never grow old. I have loved this film since I was little and added it to my extensive disney DVD collection as soon as it was released. I have watched it so many times I could probably quote it word for word, yet I'm far from bored with it. The characters are all great, jimmeny cricket is a legend in my house! Pinocchio is as everyone knows a puppet, who wants to be a real boy. The story follows his antics from being part of a puppet show to going to Pleasure Island the story really can be taken in two ways, children see the innocence in this little puppet and learn lessons about strangers, but adults see the darker side of Walt Disneys story telling and really it was ahead of time addressing alot of the issues that parent really worry about now. This is a great film for all the family ...

"...Awesomely restored..." -- 4 out of 4 stars (USA Today, p.3D, 26/03/1993)
DVD Description
Walt Disney's second full-length animated feature is a timeless, breathtakingly beautiful classic. Based on an 1800s story by Carlo Collodi, it stars Jiminy Cricket (voiced by Cliff Edwards) as a vagabond insect who spends a rainy night at the shop of toymaker Geppetto. The Blue Fairy brings a marionette to life after Geppetto wishes on a star for a son, and Jiminy Cricket is appointed the new boy's conscience. He has a devil of a time keeping up as Pinocchio is willingly lured through various forms of temptation, the most frightening of which leads him to Pleasure Island, where he drinks, smokes, and is almost turned into a jackass. This sequence, as well as Pinocchio's brave rescue of Geppetto from the belly of a whale, ranks among the most memorable in the history of animation. With such songs as When You Wish Upon a Star, this is about as magical as cinema can get, a sublimely beautiful coming-of-age story for all to treasure.
